A complete gait analysis was performed on six children with below-knee amputations to determine the kinematics and kinetics of amputee gait in children. A relatively new method of analysis--the inverse dynamic relationship--was used to determine the joint moments in the sagittal plane of the joints in the intact limb and the remaining portion of the amputated limb. The joint moments in the sagittal plane of the intact limb in the child amputee were found to be normal or below normal during level walking. From this study, it was concluded that providing a child amputee has a good prosthetic fit…

We estimated the severity of cerebellar ataxia by analyzing gait rhythm. We measured the step times in patients with pure cerebellar ataxia and healthy controls and then analyzed the distribution of the ratios of adjacent times. Gait rhythm displayed the best adaptation when expressed as the sum of the power law and lognormal distributions in both groups, and the groups could be distinguished by the exponent of the power law distribution, reflecting the fractal property of gait rhythm. Gait rhythm might reflect different features of impairment in patients with cerebellar ataxia, making it a us

BACKGROUND: Besides adequate healing of bone and soft tissues, mobility represents a significant factor in functional outcome after lower extremity fractures. Although gait analysis is gaining clinical interest and importance in the rehabilitation of patients with fractures, it is rarely used in experimental fracture healing research. The aim of this study is to establish an accurate gait analysis method for fracture healing research in small animal models and to evaluate the influence of a lower extremity fracture on gait pattern and muscle atrophy in rats.
RESEARCH QUESTION: How does an int…

INTRODUCTION: Gait exercise assist robot (GEAR), a gait rehabilitation robot developed for poststroke gait disorder, has been shown to improve walking speed and to improve the poststroke gait pattern. However, the persistence of its beneficial effect has not been clarified. In this matched case-control study, we assessed the durability of the effectiveness of GEAR training in patients with subacute stroke on the basis of clinical evaluation and three-dimensional (3D) gait analysis.
METHODS: Gait data of 10 patients who underwent GEAR intervention program and 10 patients matched for age, heigh…

BACKGROUND: Vascular parkinsonism (VP) and the postural instability and gait difficulty (PIGD) subtype of Parkinson's disease (PD) exhibit similar gait characteristics. However, most research emphasizes lower-limb gait parameters, often neglecting the role of cognitive function in gait regulation. Therefore, this study investigates differences in cognitive-motor interactions between VP and PIGD to identifying specific gait biomarkers and develop a diagnostic model.
METHODS: We recruited 37 PIGD patients and 37 VP patients between year 2022 to 2024 and used wearable devices to record gait para

OBJECTIVES: Hearing loss may contribute to mobility decline, but its relationship with gait in cognitively unimpaired adults and whether it differs by sex is unclear.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, cognitively unimpaired adults aged 50-80 years from the DataCOG study were included. Gait was assessed using the instrumented Timed Up and Go test, and pure-tone audiometry (better-ear PTA exposure). Three prespecified composite gait outcomes (global duration, turning, walking duration) were modeled unadjusted, age/sex-adjusted, and sex-stratified, with HC3-robust linear regression. The a

BACKGROUND: Gait asymmetry is a hallmark of post-stroke walking impairment, yet single-parameter measures may miss distinct multivariate patterns. Whether asymmetry-based phenotypes carry prognostic information independent of baseline clinical severity has not been tested.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 245 individuals with subacute stroke who underwent instrumented walkway gait analysis. Seven variables-six asymmetry indices and leg-length-normalised walking velocity-were entered into k-means clustering. Cluster number was selected by three convergent criteria; stability w…

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to impairments in motor, sensory, and autonomic pathways, often resulting in significant disability and reduced quality of life. Recovery of ambulation is a priority for people with SCI and vital for regaining independence and social participation. The increasing incidence of incomplete SCI, especially from non-traumatic causes like degenerative cervical myelopathy, has amplified the clinical relevance of gait recovery. Although gait analysis is widely applied in neurological conditions, its use in people with SCI remains limited, and there is no cons…

INTRODUCTION: Gait asymmetries and compensatory strategies are common among individuals with unilateral transfemoral (TF) and transtibial (TT) amputation. Although these characteristics have been widely described in the prosthetic gait literature, comparative evidence directly examining differences between the 2 amputation levels, particularly using large-scale clinical data derived from long-term databases, remains limited. This study aimed to clarify gait asymmetry characteristics in individuals with unilateral lower limb amputation by comparing spatiotemporal gait parameters between TF ampu

BACKGROUND: While gait speed serves as a clinical marker and health indicator, there is a paucity of a consolidated review of the factors that are most predictive of gait speed across the clinical stages of stroke recovery.
RESEARCH QUESTION: What are predictors of gait speed in the acute, subacute and chronic phase of stroke, categorized according to International Classification of Functioning, Health, and Disability (ICF)?
METHODS: A systematic search was conducted using four electronic databases following the PRISMA guideline. Included studies were cross-sectional, cohort and case-control

Spatiotemporal running metrics such as cadence, stride length (SL), and ground contact time (GCT) are important for assessing performance and injury risk. However, such metrics are traditionally assessed using laboratory-based tools that are often inaccessible in applied settings. Wearable devices including smartwatches and lace-mounted inertial measurement units (IMUs) offer promising alternatives, yet cross-device agreement in reporting spatiotemporal variables remains unclear. This study evaluated agreement between a commercial smartwatch and lace-mounted IMUs across varied distances and en

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that is not easily detected in the early stage. Handwriting and walking have been shown to be potential indicators of cognitive decline and are often affected by AD.
OBJECTIVE: This study proposes an assisted screening framework for AD based on multimodal analysis of handwriting and gait and explores whether using a combination of multiple modalities can improve the accuracy of single modality classification.
METHODS: We recruited 90 participants (38 AD patients and 52 healthy controls). The handwriting data was

BACKGROUND: Instrumented gait analysis (IGA) has been around for a long time but has never been shown to be useful for improving patient outcomes. In this study we demonstrate the potential utility of IGA by showing that machine learning models are better able to estimate treatment outcomes when they include both IGA and clinical (CLI) features compared to when they include CLI features alone.
DESIGN: We carried out a retrospective analysis of data from ambulatory children diagnosed with cerebral palsy who were seen at least twice at our gait analysis center. Individuals underwent a variety o…

Despite the common focus of gait in rehabilitation, there are few tools that allow quantitatively characterizing gait in the clinic. We recently described an algorithm, trained on a large dataset from our clinical gait analysis laboratory, which produces accurate cycle-by-cycle estimates of spatiotemporal gait parameters including step timing and walking velocity. Here, we demonstrate this system generalizes well to clinical care with a validation study on prosthetic users seen in therapy and outpatient clinics. Specifically, estimated walking velocity was similar to annotated 10-m walking vel…

BACKGROUND: Congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG) are genetic diseases caused by impaired synthesis of glycan moieties linked to glycoconjugates. Phosphomannomutase 2 deficiency (PMM2-CDG), the most frequent CDG, is characterized by prominent neurological involvement. Gait disturbance is a major cause of functional disability in patients with PMM2-CDG. However, no specific gait assessment for PMM2-CDG is available. This study analyses gait-related parameters in PMM2-CDG patients using a standardized clinical assessment and instrumented gait analysis (IGA).
RESULTS: Seven adult patients …

Multi-site pain is common in people aged 60 years and over and is associated with a high risk of falls. To prevent and treat pain-related disabilities, it is crucial to identify the mechanisms underlying these associations. There is some evidence that pain leads to changes in walking, such as slower gait speed and shorter walking distance, which impair mobility and may increase the risk of falls. This review evaluated evidence on the relationship between pain and gait characteristics in older people. A comprehensive search on PubMed and Embase included observational studies and clinical trials
