We herein review and analyze the diagnosis, treatment, and outcome of a severe infection caused by a human bite. A 68-year-old man was bitten on the forearm by a 3-year-old child. Rapid progression of infection, severe local and systemic poisoning, and diverse clinical manifestations were observed at presentation. Based on the medical history, physical signs, imaging examinations (X-ray films, color Doppler ultrasound, and computed tomography), laboratory examinations, and multidisciplinary consultation, the patient was diagnosed with gas gangrene or gas gangrene-like changes. Twenty-four hour

Zinc phosphide, a readily-available rodenticide, poses a significant risk for intoxication in animals. Animals have been poisoned by ingesting treated bait or the carcasses of poisoned rodents. Toxicity is due to the liberation of phosphine gas in the stomach. Clinical signs include central nervous system excitation, depression and vomition. Similarities of clinical signs with other central nervous system toxicants make the diagnosis difficult without a specific diagnostic test. The procedure outlined in this paper detects phosphine liberated from zinc phosphide by the addition of hydrochloric

Formaldehyde is a colourless irritating gas at room temperature, which, therefore, is usually stored in liquid form. This compound is often used as an antiseptic, disinfectant and fumigant in biology and medicine. Formaldehyde, as a potential carcinogen confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO), is seriously harmful to human systems, such as the respiratory system, immune system and reproductive system. This article reports a case of a 50-year-old woman who died after accidentally drinking 25% formaldehyde solution in a transparent plastic bottle. Anatomical examination revealed fixed t

Clostridium perfringens causes gas gangrene and food poisoning in humans, and monitoring this bacterium is important for public health. Although whole-genome sequencing is useful to comprehensively understand the virulence, resistome, and global genetic relatedness of bacteria, limited genomic data from environmental sources and developing countries hamper our understanding of the richness of the intrinsic genomic diversity of this pathogen. Here, we successfully accumulated the genetic data on C. perfringens strains isolated from hospital effluent and provided the first evidence that predicte

BACKGROUND: Severe metabolic acidosis is one of the most difficult diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. The most common causes of this type of acid-base balance disorder are toxic alcohols, e.g. methanol poisoning. Metabolites of methanol, formaldehyde and formic acid are responsible for severe symptoms of this poisoning.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is a preliminary assessment of usefulness of formic acid detection by gas chromatography in the daily practice of clinical toxicology department in methanol poisoning confirmed by the designation of this alcohol in the blood.
METHODS: The

A review of 4756 deaths investigated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in 1984-6 found 233 deaths from asphyxiation and poisoning, excluding asphyxiations from trench cave-ins. The highest rates were in the oil and gas industry and in utilities. Toxic gases were the largest group (65) followed by simple asphyxiants (48), mechanical causes (42), and solvents (35). Deaths from solvents were significantly more likely in young workers. Nine deaths were caused by improper air supply to respirators and five by recreational inhalation of gas or vapours. Of the 146 deaths in

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is a rare but potentially fatal cause of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), often associated with younger individuals and women without traditional cardiovascular risk factors. Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, a known cause of systemic hypoxia, has been implicated in various cardiovascular complications; however, its role in triggering SCAD remains scarcely reported. We present the case of a 55-year-old woman who developed SCAD following acute CO poisoning caused by a domestic gas leak. The patient presented with altered mental status and respiratory fa

Depression is a very common condition, and most depressed patients in many countries are treated by their General Practitioners. It is a frequent cause of suicide - one of the major causes of death in young adults - and is the disorder most commonly associated with deliberate self-poisoning, a large percentage of suicides being due to poisoning with drugs that are only available on prescription. Self-poisoning with older tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) poses major clinical management problems, since the majority of patients who overdose with these agents do not reach hospital alive. Though th

The aim of this study was to assess the clinical and laboratory factors in methanol poisoned patients to determine the prognosis of their toxicity. This survey was done as a prospective cross-sectional study in methanol-poisoned patients in Loghman-Hakim hospital poison center during 9 months from October 1999-June 2000. During this time 25 methanol-poisoned patients were admitted. The mortality rate was 12 (48%). Amongst survivors, three (23%) of the patients developed blindness due to their poisoning and the other 10 (77%) fully recovered without any complication. The mortality rate in comat

And Then There Were None and Sparkling Cyanide, two of Agatha Christie's famous novels describe potassium cyanide-induced deaths. Cyanide, a tasteless, odorless, strongly alkaline poison is a powerful gastrointestinal irritant, following oral ingestion. It reacts with hydrochloric acid in the gastric juice to produce hydrogen cyanide gas, which is absorbed and inhibits the mitochondrial electron transfer system and consequently suppresses adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production. Therefore, the central nervous system, which consumes a large amount of ATP, is first affected and symptoms of poiso

Hydroxocobalamin is a new antidote approved by the FDA for the treatment of cyanide poisoning. Our report describes a patient with cyanide poisoning who survived after treatment with hydroxocobalamin and complications we encountered with hemodialysis. A 34-year-old female presented to the emergency department after a syncopal event and seizures. Her systolic blood pressure was 75 mmHg, her QRS complex progressively widened, and pulses were lost. She was intubated and resuscitated with fluids, sodium bicarbonate for her QRS widening and vasopressors. Venous blood gas demonstrated a pH of 6.36 w

CONTEXT: Sulfur mustard (SM), a bifunctional alkylating agent, can react with a variety of biochemical molecules (DNA, RNA, proteins and other cell components) to cause a series of serious health issues or even death. Although a plethora of research has been done, the pathogenesis of SM poisoning has yet to be fully understood due to its high complexity. As a consequence, a specific antidote has not yet been developed and the treatment of SM poisoning remains a medical challenge. In recent years, various biological products and cell transplantation in the treatment of SM poisoning offered a si

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to arsine gas can cause fatal hemolysis and multiorgan damage. Whole blood exchange transfusion and hemodialysis have been recommended to treat severe acute arsine poisoning, but are associated with significant complications and sub-optimal outcomes. Plasma exchange is another method of blood purification technique but there are no data on its use in acute arsine poisoning. This retrospective study evaluated the clinical and effects and arsenic clearance from the use of plasma exchange treatment of patients with acute arsine poisoning.

Wet nappies at night could cause infants at risk to die. Tyler first suspected this ten years ago when his head was jerked back from his infant son's cot by the pungent odour of ammonia gas. This theory is consistent with the full epidemiology of cot-death. Ammonia is an insidious poison which has a wide and varied range of effects on the respiratory and nervous systems according to concentration and length of exposure. At its mildest it irritates the tissues. In larger doses ammonia can cause pulmonary oedema and pneumonitis. It can also cause stenosis of affected organs. Its chief danger lie

Chlorine-containing disinfectants are widely used as household cleaning agents and in swimming pools and industrial settings. Accidents involving these disinfectants are an important public health concern. Exposure to high chlorine concentrations can induce acute chlorine toxicity, with acute poisoning from chlorine gas primarily affecting the respiratory system and causing irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, and occasionally the skin. Significant exposure may result in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which carries a risk of mortality. This report describes the case of a 76-y
