An overview of the biological significance of endogenous gases: new roles for old molecules.

Biologically active gases that occur naturally in the body include nitric oxide (NO), carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S). Each of these molecules is synthesized by enzymes which have been characterized biochemically and pharmacologically, and each acts, via well-established molecular targets, to effect physiological and/or pathophysiological functions within the body. Major biological roles that appear to be common to all three gases include the regulation of vascular homoeostasis and central nervous system function. It is becoming increasingly clear that both the synthesis and …

Effects of SO2 and pH on blood-gas partition coefficients of inert gases.

Potential effects of SO2 and of pH on blood-gas partition coefficients, lambda, for inert gases, including SF6, ethane, cyclopropane, halothane, diethyl ether, acetone and N2, were systematically investigated using human blood. Measurements on lambda were performed at 37 degrees C in conditions of varied SO2 and pH using gas chromatography. Incorporating the experimental data on lambda, multiple inert gas elimination was applied to 18 patients with varied chronic lung diseases, in order to estimate the effects of SO2 and of pH on both inert gas exchange and resultant recovery of VA/Q distribut…

Are arterial blood gases of value in treatment decisions for carbon monoxide poisoning?

Traditionally, the carboxyhemoglobin (HbCO) level has been used to estimate the severity of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Through extensiv … with pHa reinforces the clinical impression that patients with acidosis, alkalosis, or normal blood gases could have equally severe neurologic symptomatology at HbCO levels ranging from 1% to 62%.

Venous and arterial blood gases during and after cardiopulmonary resuscitation in dogs.

This study was undertaken to characterize blood gas, pH, and lactate changes during and after cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in arteria … rterial pH increased 0.25 units, PCO2 decreased 22 mm Hg, and PO2 increased 200 mm Hg. Venous blood gases exhibited gradual changes during the CPR period. With the re-establishment of circulation and spontaneous respirations, both the arterial and venous pH levels decreased to nearly 7.1, and PCO2 approached 40 mm Hg. Lactate increased to 32 mg/dl durin …

Anaphylaxis in the monkey: respiratory mechanics, acid-base status and blood gases.

Aggregate anaphylaxis was induced by intravenous injection of the specific antigen in eight ovalbumin-sensitized monkeys. Changes in respiratory mechanics, acid-base status and blood gases were studied during the following half hour. Within 1 minute after challenge, a short period of respiratory depression, probably reflex-mediated, was observed. This was followed by hyperventilation, and arterial PCO2 decreased. There was a rapid increase in pulmonary resistance (Rpulm) and a concomitant decrease in pulmonary dynamic compliance (Cdyn), suggesting constriction of smooth muscles in the lung. Rp…

Lack of harmonisation of greenhouse gases reporting standards and the methane emissions gap.

Monitoring companies' contributions to climate dynamics and their exposure to transition risks requires accurate measurements of their non-carbon dioxide greenhouse gas emissions (non-CO2 GHG). However, carbon accounting standards are not harmonised and allow for some discretion when converting emissions of different GHGs into CO2 equivalent units, the currency in which carbon footprints are expressed. Focusing on methane, we build counterfactual harmonised standards using the latest IPCC Global Warming Potential (GWP) values over 100 years and estimate a cumulative gap in reported methane emi

Assessment of radon and carrier gases in an underground gold mining company in Ghana.

Previous studies in Ghanaian mines have largely focused on radon concentration and associated health risk, with limited investigation into the role of carrier gases that influence radon transport from bedrock. This study evaluates radon (222Rn) levels, carrier gases (CO2, H2S, CH4), and their associated health risks in an underground section of the AngloGold Ashanti mine. Measurements were conducted in two phases using CR-39 solid-state nuclear track detectors and a Ventis Pro5 multi-gas detector. The average radon concentration across both phases was 214 ± 16 Bq·m-3, with phase-specific means…

Squeezing and Overcoming the Heisenberg Scaling with Spin-Orbit Coupled Quantum Gases.

We predict that exploiting spin-orbit coupling in a harmonically trapped spinor quantum gas can lead to scaling of the optimal measurement precision beyond the Heisenberg scaling. We show that quadratic scaling with the number of atoms can be facilitated via squeezed center-of-mass excitations of the atomic motion using 1D spin-orbit coupled fermions or strongly interacting bosons (Tonks-Girardeau gas). Based on predictions derived from analytic calculations of the corresponding quantum Fisher information, we then introduce a protocol which overcomes the Heisenberg scaling (and limit) with the

Formation of H3O+ and OH by CO2 and N2O trace gases in the atmospheric environment.

The impact of cosmic rays' energetic subatomic particles on climate and global warming is still controversial and under debate. Cosmic rays produce ions that can trigger fast reactions affecting chemical networks in the troposphere and stratosphere especially when a large amount of relevant trace gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, sulfur dioxide and water are injected by volcanic eruptions. This work focuses on synchrotron experiments and an ab initio theoretical study of the ion chemistry of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide radical cations reacting with water. These molecules catalyze a f…
