Gastrointestinal symptoms and healthcare utilization have increased among patients with functional gastrointestinal and motility disorders during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to unprecedented disruptions in healthcare. Functional gastrointestinal and motility disorders (FGIMD) are associated with significant healthcare utilization. The clinical implications of these healthcare disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic on clinical outcomes in patients with FGIMD are unclear. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of patients with three common FGIMD (irritable bowel syndrome [IBS], gastroparesis, functional dyspepsia [FD]) tested for SARS-CoV-2 to describe alterations in gastrointestinal sympto

Hesperidin facilitating gastrointestinal motility by "Gut-brain axis" and "SCF/C-Kit signaling pathways".

Hesperidin shows promising results as a potential feed additive for enhancing gastrointestinal motility in animals. Gastrointestinal function plays a pivotal role in animal growth and the digestibility of dietary nutrients, with gastrointestinal motor function serving as a crucial component. However, limited research has been conducted on the application of hesperidin as a feed additive to promote gastrointestinal motility. The present study aims to assess the efficacy of Hesperidin as a feed additive in promoting gastrointestinal motility and elucidating its underlying mechanism. A total of 2…

Bidirectional Effects of Mao Jian Green Tea and Its Flavonoid Glycosides on Gastrointestinal Motility.

Mao Jian Tea (MJT) has been generally consumed as a digestive aid for more than a hundred years in the Shanxi province of China. However, determination of its efficacy still remains elusive. This study investigated the effect of Mao Jian Green Tea (MJGT) on gastrointestinal motility. The biphasic effects of the hydro extracts of MJGT on gastric emptying and small intestinal propulsion of rats were identified in vivo; namely, the low (MJGT_L) and medium (MJGT_M) concentrations promoted gastrointestinal motility (p < 0.05), whereas the high concentration (MJGT_H) showed the opposite effect (p < …

Recovery of fasted and fed gastrointestinal motility after open versus laparoscopic cholecystectomy in dogs.

OBJECTIVE: The authors investigate the recovery of gastrointestinal motility in the fed and fasted state after laparoscopic and open cholecystectomy. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Clinical recovery after laparoscopic cholecystectomy is known to be more rapid than after conventional open cholecystectomy. However, the actual effect of a laparoscopic approach on gastrointestinal motility, particularly fed-state motility, is not well investigated. METHODS: Laparoscopic (LAP, n=6) or open (OPEN, n=6) cholecystectomy was performed in 12 dogs. Bipolar recording electrodes were placed on the antrum, smal…

Acetic Acid-Induced Writhing Is Temporally Dissociated from Gastrointestinal Motility in Freely Moving Rats.

The acetic acid-induced writhing test is a standard model for visceral pain and analgesic screening. While writhing behavior may have been implicitly assumed to be associated with gastrointestinal motor activity, whether gastrointestinal motility directly triggers writhing behavior has remained untested. We simultaneously recorded antral and duodenal motility using strain gauge transducers in freely moving rats during acetic acid-induced writhing events. Our analysis, employing a hidden Markov model, found no evidence that antral or duodenal motility exhibited time-locked changes relative to w…

Colonic dilation and altered ex vivo gastrointestinal motility in the neuroligin-3 knockout mouse.

Gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunction is commonly reported by people diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD; autism) but the cause is unknown. Mutations in genes encoding synaptic proteins including Neuroligin-3 are associated with autism. Mice lacking Neuroligin-3 (Nlgn3-/- ) have altered brain function, but whether the enteric nervous system (ENS) is altered remains unknown. We assessed for changes in GI structure and function in Nlgn3-/- mice. We found no significant morphological differences in villus height or crypt depth in the jejunum or colon between wildtype (WT) and Nlgn3-/- mice.

Dose-related effects of synthetic human beta-endorphin and naloxone on fed gastrointestinal motility.

In humans, plasma beta-endorphin levels rise during application of acute stressful stimuli (vertigo, cold pain, and transcutaneous electrical stimulation) that induce gut motor disturbances. Whereas it is possible that circulating beta-endorphin participates in the mediation of these central effects on gut motility, its role cannot be established solely on the basis of changes in plasma levels. Therefore, we designed the present study to investigate 1) the dose-related effects of intravenous synthetic human beta-endorphin and naloxone on gastrointestinal pressure activity in fed healthy indivi

Oropharyngeal Dysphagia and Impaired Motility of the Upper Gastrointestinal Tract-Is There a Clinical Link in Neurocritical Care?

Patients in the neurological ICU are at risk of suffering from disorders of the upper gastrointestinal tract. Oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) can be caused by the underlying neurological disease and/or ICU treatment itself. The latter was also identified as a risk factor for gastrointestinal dysmotility. However, its association with OD and the impact of the neurological condition is unclear. Here, we investigated a possible link between OD and gastric residual volume (GRV) in patients in the neurological ICU. In this retrospective single-center study, patients with an episode of mechanical venti

X-ray analysis of gastrointestinal motility in conscious mice. Effects of morphine and comparison with rats.

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive methods to study gastrointestinal (GI) motility are of high interest, particularly in chronic studies. Amongst these, radiographic techniques after contrast intragastric administration may offer many advantages. In previous studies, we have successfully and reproducibly applied these techniques together with a semiquantitative analysis method to characterize the effect of different drugs, acutely or repeatedly administered in rat models, but we have never before used these techniques in mice. These are very convenient in basic research. Our aim was to determine if our
