Collagen gel contraction assay.

Mucosal tissues undergo contraction and relaxation on a continuous basis. In its normal state, the pliable intestinal tract is characterized … model for tissue contraction that takes advantage of the finding that cell-populated collagen hydrogels contract over time in a predictable, consistent manner. This model allows for investigation of the influence of specific agonists on the rate and extent of matrix contraction.

Aspiration of fruit gel snacks.

Aspiration of a foreign body is common in children and can cause upper airway obstruction, leading to significant morbidity or mortality. We report 3 cases of aspiration of a popular fruit-flavored gel snack that led to cardiopulmonary arrest and death in 1 case and respiratory failure in 2 other cases. There is increasing concern about the safety of this gel snack and its risk of aspiration, even in older children. Pediatricians should advise parents and children about the dangers of eating this candy during their health maintenance visits.

Degradation of gel in tray whitening.

This article will address the breakdown or lowering of active bleaching agent concentration during use in the mouth. A greater than expected degradation occurs during the first 5 minutes followed by an exponential rate loss. Subjects have a large variation in degradation rates. After 2 and 6 hours there was 52% and 24% respectively, of the active agent present in a carbamide peroxide gel. The presence or absence of the pellicle did not affect the rate of degradation. The relationship of gel degradation to the whitening capability of a gel is yet to be determined.

Toward Dynamic Liquid Cell Scaffold: Photoreversible Ion Gels Exhibiting Light-Induced Sol-Gel Transitions.

Reversible sol-gel transitions are difficult to achieve in conventional water-swollen hydrogels in open aqueous environments, because polymer chains dissolve or diffuse once the network disassembles. Here, we present a proof-of-concept to overcome this limitation by introducing a water-immiscible and non-cytotoxic ionic liquid (IL) phase that confines polymer networks and prevents dissolution during reversible phase transitions. We report a photoreversible ion gel that crosses the rheological boundary (tan δ ∼ 1) under light, enabling reversible sol-gel switching within this closed IL environm…

Adsorption effect and thermodynamics of pine pollen for off-odor compounds in surimi gels.

This study aimed to evaluate pine pollen as a natural adsorbent for off-odor control in surimi gels and elucidate pollen adsorption behavior. The results demonstrated that pine pollen significantly reduced the content and odor activity values of most aldehydes, ketones and alcohols that contributed to off-odor in surimi gels by GC-MS analysis. The adsorption behavior of pine pollen to 5 typical off-odor compounds (hexanal, nonanal, (Z)-4-heptenal, (E,Z)-2,6-nonadienal and 1-octen-3-ol) in surimi gels was further explored. Kinetic analyses demonstrated that their adsorption onto pine pollen inv…

Biomaterial gels drive endogenous neurogenesis to support functional recovery after adult traumatic cortical injury.

Activation and neuronal differentiation of endogenous neural stem/progenitor cells within the hippocampal neurogenic niche (a neurogenic region) of the adult mammalian brain are considered potential bases for restoration of cognitive and memory functions. However, following traumatic cortical brain injury (i.e., injuries in a non-neurogenic region), the local microenvironment becomes hostile due to the presence of inhibitory factors such as inflammation, edema, and hypoxic–ischemic stress. These conditions hinder the migration and subsequent neuronal differentiation of activated neural stem/pr

[Development of Novel Supramolecular Gels for Pharmaceutical Applications and Mechanistic Elucidation of Supramolecular Gelation].

Supramolecular gels are soft materials formed through the self-assembly of low-molecular-weight gelators via noncovalent interactions. Because their molecular structures can be precisely designed, supramolecular gels are promising functional materials with stimuli-responsive properties. This review summarizes our studies on the design and development of supramolecular gels for pharmaceutical applications, as well as the mechanistic elucidation of supramolecular gelation. First, disaccharide-coupled amphiphilic ureas were designed as low-molecular-weight gelators for small intestine-targeted dr…

Alginate gels: Chemistry, gelation mechanisms, and therapeutic applications with a focus on GERD treatment.

Alginate, a natural polysaccharide derived primarily from marine algae, has become popular in biomedical research due to its versatile gelation properties and biocompatibility. This review explores the chemistry, gelation mechanisms, and therapeutic applications of alginate gels, with a particular focus on their role in gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) management. Alginate's structure, comprised of guluronic and mannuronic acid blocks, allows for gel formation by ionic cross-linking with divalent cations like calcium ions, generating a stable "egg-box" structure. The effects of pH, tempe…

Ultrasound-Triggered Self-Assembly of Discrete Oligourethanes into Supramolecular Gels: Importance of Stereocenter Sequence.

Stereochemistry and the monomer sequence of biopolymers are key parameters that guide self assemblies and functions of biological systems. However, abiotic macromolecules are still behind in mimicking the selective interactions that drive the complexity of living matter. Herein, we report that synthetic, precise oligourethanes can form noncovalent assemblies leading to supramolecular gels. Notably, the process of supramolecular gelation occurs outside the aqueous environment and exhibits reversible adaptive behavior in response to external stimuli, including ultrasound and temperature. Gel for…

Rose Bengal-Incorporated Supramolecular Gels as a Topical Platform for Localized Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy.

Efficient and localized singlet oxygen (SO) generation is essential for improving antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT). In this study, a bis-imidazolium-based amphiphilic gelator is used, which self-assembles into a supramolecular gel in a water-ethanol medium and incorporates Rose Bengal (RB) as a photosensitizer. The gel network provides a confined environment that promotes SO formation under light irradiation. RB@Gel was characterized with respect to its morphology, degradation behavior, and swelling properties. Biopharmaceutical assessment included in vitro release, ex vivo permeation

Gels and cells: the Leishmania biofilm as a space and place for parasite transmission.

Leishmania make an abundant glycoprotein and proteophosphoglycan-rich gel, called the promastigote secretory gel, in the anterior midgut of their sand fly vector. This gel is a multi-faceted virulence factor which promotes the survival and transmission of the parasites between hosts. Here, we present the case that Leishmania parasites embedded in the promastigote secretory gel should be redefined as a biofilm as it shares striking similarities in biogenesis, form, and function with biofilms of other unicellular organisms. We believe that this reinterpretation will stimulate new hypotheses and
