Intolerance of uncertainty, worry, and rumination in major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder.

Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) can be defined as a cognitive bias that affects how a person perceives, interprets, and responds to uncertain situations. Although IU has been reported mainly in literature relating to worry and anxiety symptoms, it may be also important to investigate the relationship between IU, rumination, and depression in a clinical sample. Furthermore, individuals who are intolerant of uncertainty easily experience stress and could cope with stressful situations using repetitive thought such as worry and rumination. Thus, we investigated whether different forms of repetiti

Cost-effectiveness of psychological and pharmacological interventions for generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To assess from a health sector perspective the incremental cost-effectiveness of interventions for generalized anxiety disorder (cognitive behavioural therapy [CBT] and serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors [SNRIs]) and panic disorder (CBT, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors [SSRIs] and tricyclic antidepressants [TCAs]). METHOD: The health benefit is measured as a reduction in disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), based on effect size calculations from meta-analyses of randomised controlled trials. An assessment on second stage filter criteria ("equity", "strength …

Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Social Anxiety Disorder, but Not Panic Anxiety Disorder, Are Associated with Higher Sensitivity to Learning from Negative Feedback: Behavioral and Computational Investigation.

Anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and panic anxiety disorder (PAD), are a group of common psychiatric conditions. They are characterized by excessive worrying, uneasiness, and fear of future events, such that they affect social and occupational functioning. Anxiety disorders can alter behavior and cognition as well, yet little is known about the particular domains they affect. In this study, we tested the cognitive correlates of medication-free patients with GAD, SAD, and PAD, along with matched healthy participants using a probabil…

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Generalized Anxiety Disorder: A Narrative Review.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is prevalent in the United States and while useful treatments exist, more treatment development work is needed. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for GAD has growing empirical support, but this literature has not yet been summarized for GAD alone. In this paper we provide a narrative review of the current literature on ACT for GAD. Our search yielded 21 studies of ACT for GAD with 15 included in this review (one case study, two open trials, one multiple baseline single subject design, three semi-experimental designs, and eight randomized clinical trials…

Association between generalized anxiety disorder and health-related quality of life.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to examine the association between generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in the general Korean population, and whether this relationship differed by multimorbidity profiles and household income. METHODS: We included 5,542 participants aged 19 years or older from the data of the 2021 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The GAD was assessed using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale (GAD-7). Participants with a GAD-7 score ≥ 10 were classified as having GAD. HRQOL was measured using…

Profiling Generalized Anxiety Disorder on Social Networks: Content and Behavior Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Despite a dramatic increase in the number of people with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), a substantial number still do not seek help from health professionals, resulting in reduced quality of life. With the growth in popularity of social media platforms, individuals have become more willing to express their emotions through these channels. Therefore, social media data have become valuable for identifying mental health status. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the social media posts and behavioral patterns of people with GAD, focusing on language use, emotional expression, top…

Social well-being moderates behavioral therapy response for generalized anxiety disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Identifying moderators of treatment outcome for depression and anxiety offers promise for personalizing treatment or providing novel intervention targets. Indices of social well-being have emerged as candidate moderators due to their robust impact on mental health and quality of life. Here, we examine whether measures of social support, isolation, and loneliness moderate outcomes to behavioral activation (BA) and exposure-based therapy (EXP) for individuals with GAD. METHODS: This secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial included 69 participants (31 EXP, 38 BA). Partici

Sleep disturbances in generalized anxiety Disorder: The central role of insomnia.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a chronic and disabling mental health condition characterized by excessive, uncontrollable worry and persistent psychological and somatic tension. Affecting approximately 3-6 % of the global population, GAD significantly impairs daily functioning and often coexists with other psychiatric conditions. Among its many symptoms, sleep disturbances-particularly insomnia-are among the most frequently reported and debilitating. Individuals with GAD commonly experience difficulties with sleep initiation, maintenance, and restorative rest, making insomnia one of the…

Association between living alone and generalized anxiety disorder in Korean adults.

BACKGROUND: Globally, the rise in single-person households poses a potential risk to mental health, with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) being a prominent concern. The proliferation of single-person households may exacerbate social isolation and foster loneliness and anxiety. Notably, research investigating the association between single-person households and GAD remains limited. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between single-person households and GAD across sexes in Korea. METHODS: We utilized data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey …

Personality traits that associated with generalized anxiety disorder among PhD students.

There is an association between personality traits and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). In order to differentiate the association between various personality traits and GAD, a survey was conducted among PhD students in northern China (mainland). Three conclusions could be drawn with the help of regression analysis. At first, there is a positive association between Honesty-Humility (HH)/Emotionality (E)/Conscientiousness (C)/Openness to experience (O) and GAD, whereas there is a negative association between Agreeableness (A)/eXtraversion (X) and GAD. Secondly, age, gender, major, monthly inc…

An empirical test of the metacognitive model of generalized anxiety disorder.

The metacognitive model of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) places worrying, meta-worry ("worry about worry") and corresponding underlying metacognitive beliefs (i.e., beliefs about worry) as central in the maintenance of symptoms. Previous research has demonstrated significant relationships between these factors and symptoms, but no study has tested the statistical fit of this influential model including its hypothesized components and the suggested paths between them. The aim of the current study was therefore to evaluate the fit of the metacognitive model of GAD. A total of 312 participan…
