Appraisal of sedimentary alkenones for the quantitative reconstruction of phytoplankton biomass.

Marine primary productivity (PP) is the driving factor in the global marine carbon cycle. Its reconstruction in past climates relies on biogeochemical proxies that are not considered to provide an unequivocal signal. These are often based on the water column flux of biogenic components to sediments (organic carbon, biogenic opal, biomarkers), although other factors than productivity are posited to control the sedimentary contents of the components, and their flux is related to the fraction of export production buried in sediments. Moreover, most flux proxies have not been globally appraised. H

Can Sediments Contaminated by Mining be a Source of Mercury in the Coastal Environment Due to Dredging? Evidence from Thermo-Desorption and Chemical Speciation.

The sediments in the Gulf of Trieste (northern Adriatic Sea, Italy) are contaminated by mercury (Hg) due to historic mining which took place in Idrija (Slovenia). Despite many studies having been done regarding Hg, no information is available on the potential impact of dredging required along the main channel approaching the Port of Monfalcone. Sixteen surface sediment samples were collected along the channel to determine both total Hg concentration and chemical species using the thermo-desorption (TD) technique. Six samples were also chosen to apply a selective sequential extraction (SSE). Th

Insights into the factors influencing mercury concentrations in tropical reservoir sediments.

Thousands of dams are currently under construction or planned worldwide to meet the growing need for electricity. The creation of reservoirs could, however, lead to conditions that promote the accumulation of mercury (Hg) in surface sediments and the subsequent production of methylmercury (MeHg). Once produced, MeHg can bioaccumulate to harmful levels in organisms. It is unclear to what extent variations in physical features and biogeochemical factors of the reservoir impact Hg accumulation. The objective of this study was to identify key drivers of the accumulation of total Hg (THg) in tropic

Impacts of key factors on heavy metal accumulation in urban road-deposited sediments (RDS): Implications for RDS management.

Understanding of the impacts of key influential factors on RDS related heavy metal (HM) contamination is crucial for developing effective RDS management strategies to support the stormwater pollution mitigation. In this paper, three factors (i.e. traffic condition, slope of road and antecedent dry period) were considered to investigate their influences on the accumulation of RDS and adsorbed HMs. Positive correlations between truck and Zn/Ni content in RDS, car and Cu/Pb content in fine RDS, as well as bus and Cu content in coarse RDS were observed. Relative to sloping stretches, RDS from leve

Presence of mercury and methylmercury in Baltic Sea sediments, collected in ammunition dumpsites.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is the most toxic and dangerous form of mercury occurring in the environment. MeHg is highly bioaccumulative in organisms and undergoes biomagnification via the food chain. In the Baltic Sea munition dumpsites, methylmercury can be formed from mercury fulminate contained in primary explosives, as environmental conditions there favour methylation. MeHg in analysed sediments ranged from 19 to 2362 pg g-1d.w., the concentration of mercury (HgTOT) ranged from 4 to 294 ng g-1 d.w., and the values of MeHg/Hg ratio ranged from 0.1 to 2.0%. The obtained results confirmed that muni

Assessment of the Chemical State of Bottom Sediments in the Eutrophied Dam Reservoir in Poland.

The aim of the presented research was to examine the concentration of biogenic compounds and heavy metals in the bottom sediments of the Sulejów Reservoir (Central Poland) from October 2018. Based on the obtained research results, maps of the spatial distribution were prepared. The following parameters were analyzed: total phosphorus (TP), total Kjeldahl nitrogen, total organic carbon (TOC), ratio of total organic carbon to nitrogen (C:N), organic matter content as well as Cd, Cr and Pb concentrations. The sediments were collected at 28 sampling sites, covering the whole area of the reservoir.

Effects of a century of mining and industrial production on metal contamination of a model saline ecosystem, Great Salt Lake, Utah.

Effects of mining and metals production have been reported in freshwater lake sediments from around the world but are rarely quantified in saline lake sediments, despite the importance of these lake ecosystems. Here we used dated sediment cores from Great Salt Lake, Utah, USA, a large saline lake adjacent to one of the world's largest copper mines, to measure historical changes in the deposition of 22 metals. Metal concentrations were low prior to the onset of mining in the catchment in 1860 CE. Concentrations of copper, lead, zinc, cadmium, mercury, and other metals began increasing in the la

Bioavailable trace metals and their ecological risks in the tourist beaches of the Southeast coast of India.

The concentration of Acid Leachable Trace Metals (ALTMs) was assessed in urbanized tourist beaches (96 samples from Marina beach, 34 samples from Edward Elliot's beach, and 28 samples from Silver beach) of southeast coast of India. The concentration of metals accumulated in the beach sediment was less than the Upper Continental Crust (UCC) background reference values. The mean enrichment of ALTMs in the studied urban tourist beaches showed the following descending order: Marina beach - Cr > Pb > Ni > Zn > Cu > Mn > Co; Edward Elliot's beach - Cr > Pb > Ni > Mn > Co > Zn > Cu; Silver beach - Cr

Using stable isotopes to discriminate anthropogenic impacts of the sedimentary organic matter pollution in the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon (RJ, Brazil).

Over the last decades, the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon (RFL), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has been impacted by the release of untreated domestic sewage, causing eutrophication processes with negative effects on its biota. Recently, the RFL underwent urban interventions to fulfill the demands of the 2016 Olympic Games, which included building the waist gallery and monitoring clandestine waste discharges into the underground drainage network. Organic-source tracing methods can be successfully used to characterize the organic matter transported from the urbanized areas to the RLF. The application of th

Sediment respiration contributes to phosphate release in lowland surface waters.

High phosphate (PO4) concentration peaks in lowland rivers occur due to internal loading at low flow rates and low dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations. However the mechanisms controlling this PO4 are not fully understood yet. This study was set up to identify additional factors affecting internal P loading, the hypothesis being that sediment respiration varies among sediments and might explain spatial variability in reducing conditions. The sediment of ten rivers was collected for a static sediment-water incubation experiment without aeration, to induce oxygen depletion by sediment respiratio

Tracking natural and anthropogenic Pb exposure to its geological source.

Human Pb exposure comes from two sources: (i) natural uptake through ingestion of soils and typified by populations that predate mining activity and (ii) anthropogenic exposure caused by the exposure to Pb derived from ore deposits. Currently, the measured concentration of Pb within a sample is used to discriminate between these two exposure routes, with the upper limit for natural exposure in skeletal studies given as 0.5 or 0.7 mg/kg in enamel and 0.5/0.7 μg/dL in blood. This threshold approach to categorising Pb exposure does not distinguish between the geological origins of the exposure ty

Spatial distribution of hydrogen sulfide and sulfur species in coastal marine sediments Hiroshima Bay, Japan.

This study aims to reveal spatial distribution of hydrogen sulfide and sulfur species in marine sediments in Hiroshima Bay, Japan, by direct analyses using a combination of detection tubes and X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. In summer and autumn, the hydrogen sulfide concentration ranged from <0.1 to 4 mg-S L-1. In this study, only hydrogen sulfide was observed in autumn and at two stations in summer. In contrast, some earlier studies reported in all seasons in Hiroshima Bay the presence of acid volatile sulfide, which is used as a proxy of sulfide content. The sulfur species in

Heavy metal concentrations and chemical fractions in sediment from Swan Lagoon, China: Their relation to the physiochemical properties of sediment.

This study was performed to determine the distribution and chemical fractions of five heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn) in sediment from three sampling areas in Swan Lagoon, and their relation to the physiochemical properties of sediment were explored. The results revealed that Cd in sediment from the sand part (SP), muddy sand part (MSP) and sand muddy part (SMP) were potentially highly susceptible and bioavailable since the exchangeable fractions were 21.0%, 27.4%, and 32.1%, respectively, of the total concentrations. A portion of Pb and Zn were observed as reducible fractions owing to t

Deep Subseafloor Fungi as an Untapped Reservoir of Amphipathic Antimicrobial Compounds.

The evolving global threat of antimicrobial resistance requires a deep renewal of the antibiotic arsenal including the isolation and characterization of new drugs. Underexplored marine ecosystems may represent an untapped reservoir of novel bioactive molecules. Deep-sea fungi isolated from a record-depth sediment core of almost 2000 m below the seafloor were investigated for antimicrobial activities. This antimicrobial screening, using 16 microbial targets, revealed 33% of filamentous fungi synthesizing bioactive compounds with activities against pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Interestingly, o

Distribution patterns and possible influencing factors of As speciation in ornithogenic sediments from the Ross Sea region, East Antarctica.

Ornithogenic sediments are rich in toxic As (arsenic) compounds, posing a potential threat to local ecosystems. Here we analyzed the distribution of As speciation in three ornithogenic sediment profiles (MB6, BI and CC) collected from the Ross Sea region, East Antarctica. The distributions of total As and total P (phosphorus) concentrations were highly consistent in all three profiles, indicating that guano input is a major factor controlling total As distribution in the ornithogenic sediments. The As found in MB6 and CC is principally As(V) (arsenate), in BI As(III) (arsenite) predominates, b

Effects of organic matter addition on methylmercury formation in capped and uncapped marine sediments.

In situ subaqueous capping (ISC) of contaminated marine sediments is frequently proposed as a feasible and effective mitigation option. However, though effective in isolating mercury species migration into overlying water, capping can also alter the location and extent of biogeochemical zones and potentially enhance methylmercury (MeHg) formation in Hg-contaminated marine sediments. We carried out a boxcosm study to investigate whether the addition of organic carbon (OC) to Hg-contaminated marine sediments beneath an in situ cap would initiate and/or enhance MeHg formation of the inorganic Hg

Role of Settling Particles on Mercury Methylation in the Oxic Water Column of Freshwater Systems.

As the methylation of inorganic mercury to neurotoxic methylmercury has been attributed to the activity of anaerobic bacteria, the formation of methylmercury in the oxic water column of marine ecosystems has puzzled scientists over the past years. Here we show for the first time that methylmercury can be produced in particles sinking through oxygenated water column of lakes. Total mercury and methylmercury concentrations were measured in the settling particles and in surface sediments of the largest freshwater lake in Western Europe (Lake Geneva). While total mercury concentration differences

Geogenic Cr oxidation on the surface of mafic minerals and the hydrogeological conditions influencing hexavalent chromium concentrations in groundwater.

This study aims to specify the source minerals of geogenic chromium in soils and sediments and groundwater and to determine the favorable hydrogeological environment for high concentrations of Cr(VI) in groundwaters. For this reason, chromium origin and the relevant minerals were identified, the groundwater velocity was calculated and the concentrations of Cr(VI) in different aquifer types were determined. Geochemical and mineralogical analyses showed that chromium concentrations in soils and sediments range from 115 to 959 mg/kg and that serpentine prevails among the phyllosilicates. The high

Behaviour and recovery of human adenovirus from tropical sediment under simulated conditions.

This study assessed the contributions of pH and organic matter (OM) on the recovery of infectious human adenovirus 5 (HAdV-5) and genome copies (GCs) in waters that were artificially contaminated with tropical soil. The use of a mathematical equation was proposed based on the flocculation index of clay to assess the recovery of total GCs in these controlled assays. The results suggest that solids in the water reduced the viral genome copy loads per millilitre (GC · mL(-1)) and viral infectivity. OM did not influence the GC · mL(-1) recovery rate (p > 0.05) but led to a 99% (2 log10) reduction

Age of Barrier Canyon-style rock art constrained by cross-cutting relations and luminescence dating techniques.

Rock art compels interest from both researchers and a broader public, inspiring many hypotheses about its cultural origin and meaning, but it is notoriously difficult to date numerically. Barrier Canyon-style (BCS) pictographs of the Colorado Plateau are among the most debated examples; hypotheses about its age span the entire Holocene epoch and previous attempts at direct radiocarbon dating have failed. We provide multiple age constraints through the use of cross-cutting relations and new and broadly applicable approaches in optically stimulated luminescence dating at the Great Gallery panel,
