Changes in Dietary Patterns and Clinical Health Outcomes in Different Countries during the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has led to an excess in community mortality across the globe. We review recent evidence on the clinical pathology of COVID-19, comorbidity factors, immune response to SARS-CoV-2 infection, and factors influencing infection outcomes. The latter specifically includes diet and lifestyle factors during pandemic restrictions. We also cover the possibility of SARS-CoV-2 transmission through food products and the food chain, as well as virus persistence on different surfaces and in different e

Who holds a shared responsibility view of minimizing gambling harm? Results from a multiwave survey of casino gamblers.

Objective: Academics, gambling regulators, and the gambling industry increasingly espouse a shared responsibility view of preventing gambling harm, considering individual gamblers and external stakeholders (e.g., gambling industry employees, government regulators, and public health workers) to be jointly responsible for this task. This study is the third in a series exploring gamblers' beliefs about responsibility for preventing gambling harm. Method: A sample of 4,336 subscribers to MGM Resorts International (MGM)'s loyalty card program as of January 2020 completed a web-based survey. Results

Clinical Features of Patients with COVID-19: is Temperature Screening Useful?

BACKGROUND: As many businesses reopen after government-induced restrictions, many public agencies and private companies, such as banks, golf courses, and stores, are using temperature screening to assess for possible coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection both for patrons and for employees. Self-measured worksite blood pressure and its association with organ damage in working adults: Japan Morning Surge Home Blood Pressure (J-HOP) worksite study.

The effects of elevations in blood pressure (BP) on worksite stress as an out-of-office BP setting have been evaluated using ambulatory BP monitoring but not by self-measurement. Herein, we determined the profile of self-measured worksite BP in working adults and its association with organ damage in comparison with office BP and home BP measured by the same home BP monitoring device. A total of 103 prefectural government employees (age 45.3 ± 9.0 years, 77.7% male) self-measured their worksite BP at four timepoints (before starting work, before and after a lunch break, and before leaving the w…

Turning around an Academic Health System by Reshaping Culture and Improving Performance.

Academic health systems - particularly those serving underserved states - carry a unique responsibility to advance patient care, education, and research while operating under significant financial, workforce, and regulatory constraints. This article describes the transformation of OU Health and the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, Oklahoma's only academic health system, emerging from a period of clinical, financial, and cultural distress as a more unified, mission-driven enterprise demonstrating early signs of recovery and performance improvement. Following a costly divestiture from

Designing and implementing an interdependent resilience culture.

Once an emergency occurs, companies find themselves competing for diminishing resources. Companies mired in confusion and debate often fail to obtain the resources necessary for a speedy recovery and fail to meet the expectations of their various interested parties. Unfortunately, it is during these emergencies that the firm is judged. Unfavourable evaluations of a company by customers, the government and/or the general public result in lost future revenue through contracts that are either not renewed or cancelled, as well as disqualification from tenders and lost bids. This paper discusses ho

Clinical and workplace factors associated with a return to modified duty in work-related upper extremity disorders.

Return to work following treatment for a work-related upper extremity disorder (WRUED) is affected by a variety of medical, workplace, and personal factors, and returning to modified duty may ease the transition to normal work activities. This study surveyed 165 federal government employees (127 females, 38 males) who were unable to resume their normal work after filing a workers' compensation claim for a WRUED (<90 days from claim filing) and who volunteered for a randomized study of alternative case management strategies. Before randomization, participants completed a baseline survey of uppe…

Response of hostile individuals to stressful changes in their working lives: test of a psychosocial vulnerability model.

BACKGROUND: According to the psychosocial vulnerability model, the health of hostile individuals is at greater risk than that of non-hostile individuals, due partly to lesser ability of the former to cope with psychosocial stress situations. We examined whether hostile individuals were more vulnerable than others to health problems when faced with stressful changes in their working lives. METHODS: Hostility, sickness absence and psychosocial stressors in 866 local government employees over a 5-year period, which included severe economic decline, were investigated. Hostility was measured by a …

[Sudden infant death and sickle cell anemia in the Sahel region of Africa].

The authors investigated the incidence of sudden infant death syndrome (S.I.D.S.) in families of government employees who benefited of free health care. Out of approximately 400 families with around 2000 children, 29 reported at least one infant death meeting the chosen criteria for S.I.D.S. A total of 41 children, mostly males, died between 1 day and 30 months of age, amongst the 149 children born in these families; most of them died during the first 3 months of life. The mothers were generally house wives, aged 26.2 +/- 1.0 years. Sickle cell trait was found in at least one parent of 21 fami…

The United States Navy and Employees with Cancer: The Time for Change Is Now.

The US Navy, including the US Marine Corps and Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP), has a robust radiological protection and monitoring program meeting (and typically exceeding, in the name of conservatism) federal law requirements. The program covers the variety of ways in which the Navy produces and uses ionizing radiation and radioactive sources: in medicine, nuclear ship propulsion and repair, industrial and aircraft radiography, and myriad other unique uses in carrying out its vital mission. In executing these programs, thousands of people across the world are employed as active-duty

Epidemiology of foot and ankle injuries in the workplace.

Injuries to the ankle, foot, and toes of injured workers are common. Although the workers' compensation system attempts to collect information about these injuries and report them in a meaningful way, the process is somewhat inconsistent, inaccurate, and provides information relevant to government agencies but not to physician organizations seeking to improve the prevention and treatment of work-related injuries. Several improvements in data collection could greatly increase the system's efficiency and usefulness. The first is to establish a national system of uniform data collection from each

Mitigating Credit Risk through Corporate Governance: An Investigation into the Causal Pathways from Board Accountability to Reduced Non-Performing Loans in Uganda's  Commercial Banks.

BACKGROUND: Non-performing loans (NPLs) pose a critical threat to the stability and financial performance of commercial banks globally. This study is grounded in Agency Theory, which highlights the risk of conflicts of interest between bank management (agents) and shareholders (principals). It investigates the specific role of board accountability as a governance mechanism in mitigating NPLs within the under-researched context of commercial banks in Western Uganda. METHODS: A mixed-methods approach was employed. Quantitative data were collected via surveys from 195 bank employees and board me

Study protocol and rationale of "the UP project": evaluating the effectiveness of active breaks on health indicators in desk-based workers.

BACKGROUND: Excessive sedentary time has been negatively associated with several health outcomes, and physical activity alone does not seem to fully counteract these consequences. This panorama emphasizes the essential of sedentary time interruption programs. "The Up Project" seeks to assess the effectiveness of two interventions, one incorporating active breaks led by a professional and the other utilizing a computer application (self-led), of both equivalent duration and intensity. These interventions will be compared with a control group to evaluate their impact on physical activity levels,
