BACKGROUND: Therapist actions, qualities and strategies are a potentially modifiable factor influencing outcome in psychological therapies for eating disorders. This study aims to hear the perspectives of those with lived experience, to identify therapist actions and behaviours which were helpful or unhelpful in change and recovery, and to construct a theory of the processes by which these therapist actions might impact on recovery.
METHODS: Eighteen participants who had undergone various psychological therapies for EDs took part in semi-structured interviews. They described helpful and unhel

BACKGROUND: Exercise is widely recommended for postoperative breast cancer patients due to its benefits for functional recovery and symptom management. However, real-world participation and long-term adherence remain consistently low. Existing research has largely focused on participation rates or perceived barriers, offering limited insight into the behavioral mechanisms that govern how exercise is initiated and sustained over time, particularly within specific cultural contexts.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the mechanisms underlying the initiation and maintenance of postoperative exercise behavior

PURPOSE: We aimed to clarify how parent-child interactions influence the development of self-care among adolescents with chronic illnesses in Japan.
METHODS: Eleven adolescent-guardian pairs were recruited from two hospitals in Japan. Adolescents, aged 16-24 years, were diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome or type 1 diabetes and were accompanied by one guardian. All participants were receiving treatment or outpatient follow-up care. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and data were analyzed using grounded theory procedures described by Strauss and Corbin.
RESULTS: Three major interaction

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) remain a leading cause of occupational disability worldwide. Overhead crane operators are frequently exposed to awkward postures that increase the risk of MSDs. While physical conditions are often blamed, the broader organizational and ergonomic context remains underexplored.
METHODS: This study employed a grounded theory approach, conducting 52 semi-structured interviews with crane operators and safety personnel in a large Iranian steel company. Transcripts were analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding via MAXQDA software.
RESULTS: Eight

BackgroundTraditional hospital management responses during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic proved ineffective, particularly considering the pre-existing challenges in healthcare systems. The study examines hospital management challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, transforming their lived experiences into a conceptual approach to prevent repetition and benefit health planners and policymakers in future crises and normal times.MethodsThis qualitative study utilized the grounded theory methodology, conducting in-depth interviews with 12 hospital administrators from seven major

BACKGROUND: Care of older adults requires comprehensive management and control of systemic diseases, which can be effectively managed by family physicians. Complicated medical conditions in older patients admitted to orthopedic departments (orthopedic patients) necessitate interprofessional collaboration. Nutrition is one of the essential components of management involved in improving the systemic condition of older patients. Nutrition support teams play an important role in nutrition management and can be supported by family physicians. However, the role of family physicians in nutrition supp

Introduction: As a consequence of rising life expectancies, many families are no longer made up of one, but two simultaneously aging generations. This elderly parent-older adult child (OAC) dyad has emerged as a newly overserved yet little explored demographic phenomenon. Studies on this intergenerational aging dyad and the possible ramifications of when caregivers are simultaneously aging with care-receivers are scarce, especially in low and middle-income countries. This study explored the process by which rural Indonesian OACs experience their own aging, thereby gaining insights into how thi

Nurses are faced with tremendous pressure when providing brain-dead patients with care. There is limited guidance for nurses on the care of these patients. The present study aimed to report the experiences of nurses regarding the care of patients diagnosed with brain death. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 31 nurses and other stakeholders, and the observations and field notes were analyzed using continuous and comparative analysis based on grounded theory. The qualitative analysis of the data resulted in extraction of six final categories, including 'facing increased tensions and

Objectives: An empirical study is carried out based on Plague, Inc. to explore whether the game has raised awareness of public health and urged players to make a better choice about health. Materials and Methods: Twenty-six college students from 24 cities in 11 provinces of China were investigated for a week-long survey. According to grounded theory principles, we coded original records from 69 diary reports using qualitative analysis tools. Results: We constructed nine core categories from participants' journals and drew the mechanism chart of the game as a means of health communication. The

BACKGROUND: How adults with disabilities perceive participation has received little attention. Our purpose was to formulate a grounded theory on participation, based on the subjective experience of adults with cognitive, physical, or psychiatric impairment(s), and to identify barriers, facilitators, and support needs concerning participation in different areas of life. We aimed to explore whether the United Nations' Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), ratified by Switzerland in 2014, and its principles are being met. Here we report on the main category and focus on th

The routine use of antibiotics for prevention of disease in neonatal lambs has been highlighted as inappropriate, yet research suggests that many farmers in the UK still carry out this practice. The aim of the study was to understand farmers' naturalistic decision-making around prophylactic antibiotic use in lambs. Data from 431 posts by 133 different users of an online discussion forum were analysed quantitatively using natural language processing and qualitatively using a grounded theory approach. Results from the qualitative analysis identified five categories that influenced farmers risk p

BACKGROUND: An upward trend is observed in the prevalence of Type 2 diabetes (T2D) in South-East Asian and Western Pacific regions. These patterns incur a costly health burden to developing nations around the world. A clear understanding of the mechanics behind self-management practices of T2D patients might help overcome this impasse. This information can help unlock specific problem areas that warrant specific intervention. We aim to uncover prevailing T2D self-management habits and its deviations from optimal behaviour.

INTRODUCTION: Self-care is a crucial aspect in the management of people with motor neuron disease (MND). Nurses and healthcare professionals must know the processes used by patients in performing self-care to identify problems and help them. Decision-making processes, self-understanding, and political and social support influence the self-care process in chronic diseases. Little is known about the self-care process in MND.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to gain insight on the self-care processes in people with MND.
METHOD: A grounded theory method was chosen for this study. Data from i

Exposure-based cognitive-behavior therapy (EBCBT) is the treatment of choice for panic disorder (PD). However, little is known about early treatment processes that facilitate retention in treatment and positive outcomes of PD treatment. We studied the development of early treatment process with semi-structured individual in-depth interviews with 12 patients with PD, conducted post session 3. Grounded theory was used to analyze the transcripts. The development of early treatment process was captured by four thematic categories: approaching the problem, easing in and opening up, building trust a

BACKGROUND: A proportion of veterans experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Research has shown reduced effectiveness of commonly offered psychotherapies in military personnel. Some research suggested the usefulness of art therapy for veterans with PTSD, but its mechanism of operation has been unclear. The current project aimed to establish participants' perceptions of any impact of group art therapy and some of the perceived mechanisms of change.
METHOD: In a grounded theory design, single semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine veterans who had received group art thera

BACKGROUND: Chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are increasing among the Tai Saek ethnic minority in Thailand, yet little is known about how this community culturally interprets and manages NCDs in daily life.
OBJECTIVE: To develop a substantive theory explaining how the Tai Saek ethnic group perceives NCDs and manages them within changing lifestyles.
METHODS: A grounded theory design based on Strauss and Corbin was used. Eighteen Tai Saek adults (10 with NCDs, 8 without) were theoretically sampled from two villages in Nakhon Phanom province, Thailand. Data were collected from August 20

OBJECTIVES: Community-based digital weight management programs have shown potential to address the public health concern of obesity, but often face implementation barriers. This study aimed to identify and evaluate current implementation barriers, facilitators, and further develop strategies.
METHODS: A prospective qualitative study was conducted via workshops of stakeholders from community-based weight loss management services across Singapore, alongside a separate series of interviews for adopters. A hybrid deductive-inductive approach to thematic analysis was then adopted, informed by the

This study developed a substantive grounded theory explaining how middle-aged gay men in Cebu City, Philippines, construct their attitudes toward aging. Using constructivist grounded theory methodology, 12 middle-aged gay men aged 35 to 50 were recruited through purposive and theoretical sampling and participated in semi-structured in-depth interviews. Data analysis employed initial, focused, and theoretical coding, guided by constant comparative analysis. The core category, Improvising Survival Without Guarantees, emerged as the central explanatory process through which participants navigate

BACKGROUND/AIM: Disease-related malnutrition is common in the Netherlands, and its treatment often involves the use of animal-based protein-enriched products. There is a growing trend and increasing ambition towards a more plant-based diet in the Dutch population and within Dutch healthcare institutions. However, patients may struggle to meet their protein requirements, as the availability of plant-based protein-enriched products remains limited. Patient preferences for such products have not yet been explored. This study aimed to understand patient preferences regarding plant-based protein-en
