THE TOXICITY OF HUMAN SERUM FOR THE GUINEA PIG.

FROM THE FOREGOING STUDY THERE ARE INDICATIONS: 1. Of toxicity in all fresh human serum for the guinea pig; this toxicity tends to disappear after 48 hours after bleeding, and its manifestations are strikingly similar to those of the heterophilic antibody in immune rabbit serum. 2. Of an increased toxicity in the serum of antisera-treated human cases; this is usually coexistant with the production of other antibodies; it tends likewise to disappear in time after treatment; differential absorption experiments indicate that its character is heterophilic, and its manifestations differ from those …

Experimental chlamydial salpingitis in immunosuppressed guinea pigs infected in the genital tract with the agent of guinea pig inclusion conjunctivitis.

At necropsy indication of spread of infection to fallopian tubes was found in 25 of 41 (60%) female guinea pigs infected in the genital tract with the chlamydial agent of guinea pig inclusion conjunctivitis and immunosuppressed with cyclophosphamide. Eighteen were examined histologically, and the diagnosis of acute salpingitis was confirmed in 10, based on inflammatory reaction, detection of guinea pig inclusion conjunctivitis in tissue, and formation of cysts (pyosalpinx and hydrosalpinx). Infection of fallopian tube tissue was confirmed by indirect immunofluorescence and electron microscopy.…

Macrodont Teeth in Guinea Pigs (Cavia porcellus).

Macrodontia in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) is a dental anomaly characterized by abnormal tooth enlargement and structural alterations that bear resemblance to odontoma. This review synthesizes current literature regarding the morphologic, histologic, and radiological aspects of the condition. Detailed examinations reveal that macrodontic changes affect both the crown and pulp, often leading to malocclusion, impaired mastication, and the formation of sharp edges on the tooth surface that irritate the oral mucosa. Overall, the complex presentation of macrodontia in guinea pigs underscores the …

Insights into Infant Strongyloidiasis, Papua New Guinea.

The human-infecting parasite Strongyloides fuelleborni subspecies kellyi has been reported from the island of New Guinea. We analyzed fecal DNA extracts (n = 164) from 19 infants in Papua New Guinea by using Strongyloides real-time PCR and undertook metabarcoding of cox1 and 18S rRNA hypervariable regions I and IV loci. Eight infants were infected with Strongyloides spp.; 7 were infected with S. fuelleborni subsp. fuelleborni and 1 with a Strongyloides sp. previously misattributed to S. fuelleborni subsp. kellyi. Phylogenetic and haplotyping analyses indicated S. fuelleborni in Papua New Guine…

Near work induces myopia in Guinea pigs.

The association between near work activities and myopia has not been clearly established. This study establishes a model for near work myopia (NWM) induced by short viewing distance in guinea pigs with a carefully controlled visual environment, and evaluates the effect of viewing distance in myopia development. Pigmented guinea pigs (3 weeks old) were randomly assigned to 3 groups: near work (NW)-, form-deprivation (FD)-, and -4D hyperopic-defocus (HD)-induced myopia. Animals in NW groups were kept in cylindrical cages with vertical square-wave gratings, providing short- (S, d = 18 cm), middle…

Retinal ganglion cell ablation in guinea pigs.

Guinea pigs are a common model of human ocular conditions; however, their visual function has not been fully characterized. The purpose of this study was to determine the contributions of retinal ganglion cells to structural and functional measures in guinea pigs. Healthy adult guinea pigs (n = 12) underwent unilateral optic nerve crush. Retinal structure was assessed with spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT), and thickness of the ganglion cell/nerve fiber layer (GC/NFL) was determined. Visual function was assessed with optomotor tracking of a drifting grating and light adapted e…

Guinea worm: from Robert Leiper to eradication.

Guinea worm disease, dracunculiasis or dracontiasis, is an ancient disease with records going back over 4500 years, but until the beginning of the 20th century, little was known about its life cycle, particularly how humans became infected. In 1905, Robert Thomas Leiper was sent by the British colonial authorities to West Africa to investigate the spread of Guinea worm disease and to recommend measures to prevent it. While carrying out his investigations, he made important contributions to the aetiology, epidemiology and public health aspects of Guinea worm disease and provided definitive answ…
