Guinea pigs fed a diet low in zinc develop clinical signs of apparent neurological origin. The signs include abnormal posture and locomotion as well as hypersensitivity to touch. Kupffer cells play an important role in all alimentary tract infections. Their role in intestinal amoebiasis is not clear. Anti-gastric activity of metoclopramide was studied in guinea pigs using three different models of gastric ulceration. The effect of metoclopramide on gastric acidity was also studied. It was observed that metoclopramide affords protection against all types of experimentally induced gastric ulceration, without affecting the gastric acid secretion. The protective effect, therefore, is probably due to its ability to promote gastric drainage and to prevent the pyloric reflux, thus preventing corrosive effects of bile and acid on the stomach mucosa.

Guinea-pigs were infected intranasally with influenza A Hong Kong 68 (H3N2) virus. Infective particles were re-isolated from lung homogenates up to 3 days after inoculation and indicated local replication. The subsequent lung inflammatory stages were studied by light microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The skin sensitization potential of allyl methacrylate (AMA) was studied in Hartley albino guinea pigs. Two groups of guinea pigs (10 per compound) were subjected to repeated insult patch tests either with AMA or with dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB). All guinea pigs treated with DNCB (positive control) were sensitized. None of the guinea pigs treated with AMA exhibited any evidence of sensitization and no reactions attributable to AMA were elicited as a result of exposure during the insult phase of the patch test. Mg-deficient guinea pigs developed significantly increased hearing loss during 4 weeks of noise exposure [95 dB(A)] as compared to animals fed a Mg-rich diet. The hearing loss was negatively correlated to the Mg content of the perilymph (r = -0.86). Besides this auditory effect, there was a decrease of intracellular Mg and an increase of collagen in the myocardium, both of which were correlated to the hearing loss and caused by Mg deficiency and noise stress.

The sensitization of guinea-pigs with the mixture of meningococci and heterologous-cerebral tissue commonly induces the development of the typical clinical and pathomorphological picture of allergic encephalomyelitis. Unlike Mycobacterium tuberculosis and other acid-resistant bacterial and much like Bordetella pertussis, meningococci are capable of inducing allergic encephalomyelitis when introduced in mixture with oil without cerebral tissue. The vaccinal strain induces allergic encephalomyelitis with a more moderate course of the disease.
