Haemophilus influenzae: a forgotten cause of neonatal sepsis?

Due to the introduction of the conjugate vaccine against serotype b, neonatal sepsis caused by Haemophilus influenzae became very rare. There is little data in Belgium concerning the prevalence of H. influenzae early onset neonatal sepsis and articles about neonatal sepsis and H. influenzae published in the last decade are scarce. We report two invasive infections with a non-typeable H. influenzae. These cases show that neonatal sepsis caused by non-typeable H. influenzae may be underestimated and we believe that there is need for a better registration of this kind of infection.

Outbreak of invasive Haemophilus influenzae serotype a disease.

Haemophilus influenzae serotype a is a rare cause of invasive disease. We report 5 cases of invasive H. influenzae type a that occurred in 3 infants living in a remote region of Alaska during the last 6 months of 2003. H. influenzae type a isolates from this outbreak were closely related as determined by pulsed field gel electrophoresis. Continued surveillance is necessary to monitor trends in H. influenzae invasive disease.

[Clinical results of a multicenter study of Haemophilus infection].

2379 cases of infections due to Haemophilus are reported in a one year long French multicenter study. There were 1368 low respiratory and 540 high respiratory infections, 22 epiglottitis, 86 meningitis, and 68 septicemia (bacteremia). Four hundred and one times, we considered that the bacteria was not the cause of the infection. For each type of infection, we studied the distribution according to the age, the sex and the period of the year, the eventual associations and the involved serotypes. The lethality was low (22), mainly due to a particular deficiency. At last, we compared the different

Sialic acid metabolism's dual function in Haemophilus influenzae.

Many bacterial commensals and pathogens use the sialic acids as carbon and nitrogen sources. In Escherichia coli, the breakdown of these sugars is catalysed by gene products of the nan (Nacylneuraminate) operon; other microorganisms may use a similar catabolic strategy. Despite the known ligand and antirecognition functions of the sialic acids, the contribution of their catabolism to infection or host colonization has never been directly investigated. We addressed these questions with Haemophilus influenzae type b, which metabolizes relatively few carbohydrates, using the infant-rat infection

Haemophilus influenzae type b bacteremia in older children.

Haemophilus influenzae type b (HIB) is a well-recognized cause of serious infection in infants and toddlers. However, little information exists regarding HIB infections in older children. This report describes serious HIB infections in 23 children (eight immunocompromised; 15 immunocompetent) older than 59 months of age. Data were collected over an 11-year period. The mean age of the children was 7.6 years (range, 5-15 years), and 14 were male. While three of the eight immunocompromised children had HIB pneumonia, none of the immunocompetent group had this diagnosis. Eleven of the 15 immunocom

Lethal Haemophilus influenzae type b infection in mice.

Previous animal models of invasive Haemophilus influenzae type b (HITB) infection are characterized by a low mortality rate. We produced a highly lethal infection in CF1 mice using mouse passage, mucin, and hemoglobin to enhance infectivity. Infection by the intraperitoneal route was followed by progressive peritonitis and bacteremia with subsequent HITB infection of the brain and meninges, and death. Death occurred between eight and 72 hours after infection and was associated with 10(6) to 10(9) HITB per ml of blood and with 10(2) to 10(5) HITB per g of brain. Mucin-hemoglobin did not augment

Mucosal immune cell priming by intranasally delivered Haemophilus haemolyticus is associated with heterologous protection against influenza and nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae.

INTRODUCTION: Intranasal vaccines offer a needle-free strategy to enhance immunity to respiratory infections. We investigated the mechanism of action of a novel intranasal vaccine using the human respiratory commensal Haemophilus haemolyticus (Hh), previously shown to protect against nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) otitis media and accelerate clearance of influenza A virus (IAV). METHODS: Mucosal and systemic cellular immune responses were assessed 2-144 hours after intranasal Hh treatment in mice, compared with placebo or the Toll-Like Receptor (TLR)2-6 agonist Pam2CSK4 using spect

[Surveillance of Haemophilus influenzae serotypes in Argentina from 2005 to 2010 during the Haemophilus influenzae type b conjugate vaccine era].

The introduction of the Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine in the immunization programs of many countries has greatly reduced this invasive disease and the carriage caused by this serotype, also increasing other capsular types and non-capsular isolations. There were 313 isolations of H. influenzae under study, which were recovered from a sterile site coming from pediatric and adult patients carrying the invasive disease. Patients were treated at 90 different hospitals belonging to the Red Nacional de Laboratorios para Meningitis e Infecciones Respiratorias Agudas Bacterianas (National Lab N

A Hunt for the Resistance of Haemophilus influnezae to Beta-Lactams.

Infections due to Haemophilus influnezae require prompt treatment using beta-lactam antibiotics. We used a collection of 81 isolates obtained between 1940 and 2001 from several countries. Whole genome sequencing showed the high heterogeneity of these isolates but allowed us to track the acquisition of beta-lactamase, which was first detected in 1980. Modifications of the ftsI gene encoding the penicillin-binding protein 3, PBP3, also involved in resistance to beta-lactams, appeared in 1991. These modifications (G490E, A502V, R517H, and N526K) were associated with resistance to amoxicillin that

Transmission of viable Haemophilus ducreyi by Musca domestica.

Haemophilus ducreyi was historically known as the causative agent of chancroid, a sexually-transmitted disease causing painful genital ulcers endemic in many low/middle-income nations. In recent years the species has been implicated as the causative agent of nongenital cutaneous ulcers affecting children of the South Pacific Islands and West African countries. Much is still unknown about the mechanism of H. ducreyi transmission in these areas, and recent studies have identified local insect species, namely flies, as potential transmission vectors. H. ducreyi DNA has been detected on the surfac

Haemophilus influenzae Bacteremia and Pneumonia: A Case Report.

This study reports a case of respiratory failure and pneumonia attributed to infection from a confirmed case of Haemophilus influenzae in a patient with past medical history of interstitial lung disease following a COVID-19 infection. An 88-year-old man with significant past medical history of interstitial lung disease (ILD) and self-catheterization due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) presented to the ED with shortness of breath and cough. Examination revealed reduced respiratory effort and scattered rhonchi throughout the lung fields. Urine cultures were positive for extended spectrum b

Haemophilus influenzae purulent pericarditis in an immunocompetent individual.

Purulent pericarditis is a rare bacterial illness in the post-antibiotic era that is defined as pericardial infection with gross or microscopic purulence in the pericardium. Common causes include nosocomial bloodstream infections, direct spread through thoracic surgery, or immunosuppression. We present a case of a 66-year-old male with a history of mantle cell lymphoma status post chemotherapy, completed about 4 years before presentation, in general, good health presented with acute typical chest pain associated with dyspnea on exertion. 12-lead EKG demonstrated ST elevations in anterolateral

Immunogenic and adjuvant properties of Haemophilus ducreyi lipooligosaccharides.

Haemophilus ducreyi, the chancroid-causing bacterium, produces lipooligosaccharides (HdLOS) that comprise 5-11 partially sialylated monosaccharides. Subcutaneous immunisation of mice with 5 microg of HdLOS purified from H. ducreyi strains 4438 and 7470 induced high levels of anti-HdLOS IgG. The antibody responses displayed T-cell-independent features, and were dependent upon Toll-like receptor 4/MyD88 signalling pathways as demonstrated using knockout mice. The immunogenicity of HdLOS was found to require the intact lipid A moiety. The specificity studies of the anti-HdLOS antibodies, as revea

Haemophilus ducreyi is resistant to human antimicrobial peptides.

We examined the susceptibility of Haemophilus ducreyi to antimicrobial peptides likely to be encountered in vivo during human infection. H. ducreyi was significantly more resistant than Escherichia coli to the bactericidal effects of all peptides tested. Class I and II H. ducreyi strains exhibited similar levels of resistance to antimicrobial peptides.

[Epidemiologic profile of Haemophilus influenzae infection in Tunisia].

Haemophilus influenzae, a commensal bacteria, is frequently incriminated in broncho--pulmonary surinfections and severe diseases as meningitis, pneumonia and septic arthritis, particularly in young children. A multicenter study was conducted to establish the epidemiological profile of Haemophilus influenzae diseases, to determine the rate of antibiotics resistance for guide therapeutic and preventive strategies. The identification was based on the requirements for X and V factors, and the serotype b determined by agglutination. The betalactamase production was done by nitrocefin test. Antimicr
