Knowledge of halitosis among dentists and dental hygienists.

Bad breath is a widespread condition that has been increasingly discussed among professionals and in the mass media in the last few years. In nine of ten cases, halitosis originates intraorally; hence it has become an important topic of study in the education and training of dentists and dental hygienists. However, the de facto knowledge of professionals has never been examined until today. 750 dentists and dental hygienists from Switzerland, Germany, and France were personally interviewed. Their knowledge of halitosis was assessed using a specifically designed questionnaire. In general, consi…

The evaluation of olfactory function in individuals with chronic halitosis.

Halitosis and olfactory dysfunction may disrupt an individual's quality of life remarkably. One may ask whether halitosis has effects on olfactory functions or not? Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the olfactory abilities of subjects with chronic halitosis evaluated using the measurements of volatile sulfur compounds. This study was carried out in 77 subjects, with a mean age of 40.1±13.3 years, ranging from 18 to 65 years. Forty-three participants were diagnosed as halitosis according to the gas chromatography results and constituted the halitosis group. Also, a control group was c…

Halitosis: an overview of epidemiology, etiology and clinical management.

Halitosis is an unpleasant condition that causes social restraint. Studies worldwide indicate a high prevalence of moderate halitosis, whereas severe cases are restricted to around 5% of the populations. The etiological chain of halitosis relates to the presence of odoriferous substances in exhaled air, especially the volatile sulphur compounds (VSC) produced by bacteria. The organoleptic diagnosis is the gold standard and clinical management includes oral approaches, especially periodontal treatment and oral hygiene instructions, including the tongue. When oral strategies are not successful, …

Comparison of different treatment modalities for oral halitosis.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects on intra-oral halitosis by a mouth rinse containing zinc acetate (0.3%) and chlorhexidine diacetate (0.025%) with and without adjunct tongue scraping. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-one subjects without a diagnosis of periodontitis were randomized in a cross-over clinical trial. Organoleptic scores (OLS) were assessed to define intra-oral halitosis by total volatile sulfur compound (T-VSC) measurements and by gas chromatography. RESULTS: Twenty-one subjects with a mean age of 45.7 years (SD: ±13.3, range: 21-66). The OLS were significantly lower following act…

A new organoleptic testing method for evaluating halitosis.

BACKGROUND: Halitosis is a common condition in the adult population. The organoleptic method has been used widely in the clinical field for the diagnosis of halitosis because of its simplicity; however, this method has limitations as a result of its lack of objectivity and reproducibility. We developed a new method of organoleptic testing using a gastight syringe to overcome these limitations. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical usefulness of this new method by analyzing the correlations between the organoleptic score measured by it and data from the portable sulfide moni…

Halitosis: a review of associated factors and therapeutic approach.

Halitosis or bad breath is an oral health condition characterized by unpleasant odors emanating consistently from the oral cavity. The origin of halitosis may be related both to systemic and oral conditions, but a large percentage of cases, about 85%, are generally related to an oral cause. Causes include certain foods, poor oral health care, improper cleaning of dentures, dry mouth, tobacco products and medical conditions. Oral causes are related to deep carious lesions, periodontal disease, oral infections, peri-implant disease, pericoronitis, mucosal ulcerations, impacted food or debris and…

Clinical evaluation of 222 Iranian patients with halitosis.

The primary objectives of the study were to investigate the levels of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) in Iranian patients and to find the most prevalent class of halitosis among them. The secondary objective was to study the measures employed by the patients to reduce halitosis. 46.4% of the 222 patients were female (average 32.1 years) and 53.6% were male (average 32.1 years). Contrary to other reports, males were dominant in this study. All the subjects were evaluated through oral examination, gas chromatographic analysis, organoleptic assessment and mouth cleaning and rinsing test (MCART).…

Halitosis update: a review of causes, diagnoses, and treatments.

Up to 50 percent of the U.S. population reports that their own "bad breath" has concerned them during some point in the course of their lifetime. Half of this group is indeed likely to have an ongoing sporadic or a chronic breath malodor problem. This report looks at the phenomenon of malodorous breath, which oddly persists in a society rife with scientific and medical advancements. Also reviewed are the primary causes, diagnoses, treatments, and research frontiers.

Identification of oral bacterial species associated with halitosis.

BACKGROUND: The authors examined the tongue bacteria associated with oral halitosis (bad breath originating from the oral cavity), focusing on noncultivable bacteria-bacteria that cannot be identified by bacterial culture techniques. METHODS: The authors took samples from the dorsal tongue surface of eight adult subjects with halitosis and five control subjects who did not have halitosis. They identified the bacteria in these samples by using both anaerobic culture and direct amplification of 16S ribosomal DNA, a method that can identify both cultivable and noncultivable microorganisms. They …

Optical bio-sniffer for methyl mercaptan in halitosis.

An optical bio-sniffer for methyl mercaptan (MM) one of major odorous chemicals in halitosis (bad breath) was constructed by immobilizing monoamine oxidase type A (MAO-A) onto a tip of a fiber optic oxygen sensor (od: 1.59 mm) with an oxygen sensitive ruthenium organic complex (excitation: 470 nm, fluorescent: 600 nm). A flow cell for circulating buffer solution was applied to rinse and clean the tip of the device like nasal mucosa. In order to amplify the bio-sniffer output, a substrate regeneration cycle caused by coupling MAO-A with l-ascorbic acid (AsA) as reducing reaction with reagent sy…

Biofilms and the tongue: therapeutical approaches for the control of halitosis.

Due to its location and functions, the tongue is one of the most important anatomic structures in the oral cavity. However, knowledge in reg … est in the study of the tongue niche has increased in recent years due to its association with oral halitosis and to its role as a suitable reservoir for periodontal pathogens. The structure of the tongue favours a unique and complex bacterial biofilm, in which periodontal pathogens are frequently found. However, little is known about how to control this ba …

Examination, classification, and treatment of halitosis; clinical perspectives.

Patients with halitosis may seek treatment from dental clinicians for their perceived oral malodour. In this article, an examination protocol, classification system and treatment needs for such patients are outlined. Physiologic halitosis, oral pathologic halitosis and pseudo-halitosis would be in the treatment realm of dental practitioners. Management may include periodontal or restorative treatment or both, as well as simple treatment measures such as instruction in oral hygiene, tongue cleaning and mouth rinsing. Psychosomatic halitosis is more difficult to diagnose and manage, and patients…

Clinical dilemmas posed by patients with psychosomatic halitosis.

Patients affected by psychosomatic halitosis never wish to visit a psychologic specialist, because they cannot recognize their own psychosomatic condition. They also never doubt that they have offensive oral malodor. Other people's behavior, such as covering the nose or averting the face, is interpreted by these patients as an indication that their breath is offensive, and these behaviors or attitudes reinforce their belief that they have a strong oral malodor. To clarify whether the patient's perception of another individual's attitude is affected by his or her delusion, this article is focus…

Cetylpyridinium chloride suppresses gene expression associated with halitosis.

OBJECTIVE: Halitosis is a common complaint affecting the majority of the population. Mouthrinses containing cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) have been used as oral hygiene aids to suppress oral malodor. Although the clinical efficacy of these mouthrinses has been well-documented, the mechanism whereby CPC reduces malodor is less-well-understood. We hypothesized that CPC suppresses expression of the genes (mgl and cdl) and enzymes responsible for methyl mercaptan (CH3SH) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production by oral anaerobes associated with halitosis. In this study, the mgl and cdl expression of…
