OBJECTIVE: Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) has significant impacts on different stages in the progression of chronic glaucoma. In this study, we investigated changes in the material properties of sclera and lamina cribrosa (LC) in a nonhuman primate model with elevated IOP.
METHODS: Normal adult Tibetan macaques were selected for the construction of elevated IOP model. After 40 days of stable maintenance on the ocular hypertension, the binocular eyeballs were obtained for the measurement of macroscopic parameters of the eyeballs. Posterior scleral tissue strips were obtained in circumfere

Marmosets display remarkable vocal motor abilities. Macaques do not. What is it about the marmoset brain that enables its skill in the vocal domain? We examined the cortical control of a laryngeal muscle that is essential for vocalization in both species. We found that, in both monkeys, multiple premotor areas in the frontal lobe along with the primary motor cortex (M1) are major sources of disynaptic drive to laryngeal motoneurons. Two of the premotor areas, ventral area 6 (area 6V) and the supplementary motor area (SMA), are a substantially larger source of descending output in marmosets. We

The medial frontal cortex (MFC), especially its ventral part, has long been of great interest with respect to the pathology of mood disorders. A number of human brain imaging studies have demonstrated the abnormalities of this brain region in patients with mood disorders, however, whether it is critically and causally involved in the pathogenesis of such disorders remains to be fully elucidated. In this study, we examined how the suppression of neural activity in the ventral region of the MFC (vMFC) affects the behavioral and physiological states of monkeys by using repetitive transcranial mag

Understanding the unique functions of different subregions of primate prefrontal cortex has been a longstanding goal in cognitive neuroscience. Yet, the anatomy and function of one of its largest subregions (the frontopolar cortex) remain enigmatic and underspecified. Our Society for Neuroscience minisymposium Primate Frontopolar Cortex: From Circuits to Complex Behaviors will comprise a range of new anatomic and functional approaches that have helped to clarify the basic circuit anatomy of the frontal pole, its functional involvement during performance of cognitively demanding behavioral para

The bed nucleus of stria terminalis (BST) is a critical structure that mediates sustained vigilant responses to contextual, diffuse, and unpredictable threats. Dysfunction of the BST could lead to excessive anxiety and hypervigilance, which are often observed in posttraumatic stress disorder and anxiety disorders. Vigilance of potential future threats from the external environment is a basic brain function and probably requires rapid and/or short neural circuits, which enable both quick detection of the potential threats and fast adaptive responses. However, the BST in literature does not appe

Primates are endowed with a dedicated cortical network for processing visual scene information, which is critical for navigation and object retrieval. Previous studies showed that this scene network encompasses three to maximally five cortical regions in humans and monkeys. Using submillimeter resolution fMRI (0.22 mm3 voxels), and two entirely different but carefully controlled stimulus sets, we demonstrate a robust, fine-grained, yet three-fold more extensive scene-processing network in macaques compared to previous studies. The core network, selective for both familiar and unfamiliar scenes

Genetics-based studies of women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) implicate >20 PCOS risk genes that collectively account for <10% of PCOS. Clinicians now consider that either rare alleles or non-genetic, potentially epigenetic, developmental origins may contribute key pathogenic components to >90% of PCOS cases. Animal models convincingly demonstrate excess fetal testosterone exposure in females as a reliable, epigenetic, developmental origin for PCOS-like traits. In particular, nonhuman primates (NHPs) provide the most faithful emulation of PCOS-like pathophysiology, likely beca

Infectious diseases pose one of the most significant threats to the survival of great apes in the wild. The critically endangered mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) is at high risk for contracting human pathogens because approximately 60% of the population is habituated to humans to support a thriving ecotourism program. Disease surveillance for human and non-human primate pathogens is important for population health and management of protected primate species. Here, we evaluate discarded plants from mountain gorillas and sympatric golden monkeys (Cercopithecus mitis kandti), as a no

Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by senile plaques in the brain. In the senile plaques beta-amyloid is deposited and neuroinflammation due to innate immune responses against beta-amyloid is thought to cause degeneration of synapses and neural processes. In 1999 Dale Schenk et al. discovered that immunization of amyloid precursor protein (APP) transgenic mice with amyloid-beta protein (A-beta) reduces senile plaques and prevents new deposits of beta-amyloid. They also have found that antibodies to A-beta have similar effect. Since immunized mice showed improveme

Smooth pursuit eye movements are guided by visual feedback and are surprisingly accurate despite the time delay between visual input and motor output. Previous models have reproduced the accuracy of pursuit either by using elaborate visual signals or by adding sources of motor feedback. Our goal was to constrain what types of signals drive pursuit by obtaining data that would discriminate between these two modeling approaches, represented by the "image motion model" and the "tachometer feedback" model. Our first set of experiments probed the visual properties of pursuit with brief square-pulse
