Social support and social action organizing in a "grey ghetto": the tenderloin experience. 1982-83.

The Tenderloin Senior Outreach Project (TSOP) is presented as a case study of effective community-based organizing among the isolated elderly in one of America's large "grey ghettos." Based on the theoretical underpinnings of social support theory and Freire's "education for critical consciousness," the Project has attempted to address the interrelated problems of poor health, social isolation and powerlessness endemic among the elderly in Single Room Occupancy hotels. The Project's metamorphosis is traced from a university-sponsored community development effort to a communitycontrolled organi

A case study of new approaches to address health inequalities: Due North five years on.

INTRODUCTION: When local councils took on responsibility for public health in England in 2013, leaders from across the north of England met to consider the scale of the challenge. As a result, Public Health England commissioned the Due North Report which outlined new approaches in tackling health inequalities. This second paper outlines what has been learnt in five years as a case study. This includes influencing devolution deals and new elected city mayors, planning for economic growth in deprived areas and developing community asset-based approaches. The paper outlines a new framework for pl

Driving cities to transformative climate change actions: The climate-health risk management project (CHARISMA) in India.

INTRODUCTION: Rising vulnerability to heat waves and infectious diseases due to climate change necessitates urgent action in cities. Effectiveness of urban policies, tactfulness of city planning, infrastructure development and efficiency of urban expansion plans will shape the extent and impact of climate change on a city, and the vulnerability or resilience of citizens residing in it. CASE PRESENTATION: The climate-health risk management project (CHARISMA) focuses on the development of a web-based climate-health information dashboard for 50 cities in India, aiming to aid the formulation of c

The Cost Implications in Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia of Early Versus Delayed External Cephalic Version in the Early External Cephalic Version 2 (EECV2) Trial.

OBJECTIVE: According to the Early External Cephalic Version (EECV2) Trial, planning external cephalic version (ECV) early in pregnancy results in fewer breech presentations at delivery compared with delayed external cephalic version. A Cochrane review conducted after the EECV2 Trial identified an increase in preterm birth associated with early ECV. We examined whether a policy of routine early ECV (i.e., before 37 weeks' gestation) is more or less costly than a policy of delayed ECV. METHODS: We undertook this analysis from the perspective of a third-party payer (Ministry of Health). We appli

"We are not a typical family anymore": Exploring the experiences and support needs of fathers of children with Fragile X syndrome in Australia.

A diagnosis of the X-linked condition Fragile X syndrome (FXS) in a child commonly reveals the mother's carrier status. Previous research focused on the genetic counseling process for the child and maternal family, despite calls for more research on the support needs of fathers. This study explored experiences and support needs of fathers at least 1 year after their child's FXS diagnosis to understand barriers and enablers and optimize health outcomes for the family. In-depth interviews were conducted with 11 fathers recruited through the Australian Genetics of Learning Disability Service and

Volitional processes in changing physical activity: A randomized controlled trial with individuals with knee osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: A health action process approach (HAPA)-based intervention was designed to support moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in individuals with osteoarthritis of the knee (OAK). In secondary analyses of the randomized controlled trial "preventing the impairment of primary osteoarthritis by high-impact long-term physical exercise regimen-psychological adherence program," we examined long-term effects of the intervention on HAPA determinants and MVPA, and explored the former as mediators of change. METHOD: N = 241 individuals with OAK (63% women, aged 44-80 years) were randomly

Building community resilience: The City of Victoria's approach to climate change adaptation and extreme heat response.

The Pacific Northwest heat dome of 2021 exposed the need for increased planning and response measures by local governments, and the value of collaboration in preparedness, planning and response to extreme heat events. Recognising that extreme heat is becoming an increasingly significant threat, the City of Victoria has taken steps to improve its response to future events with a focus on developing strategies that provide resources and support to those most vulnerable in the community. The Province of British Columbia and regional health authorities have since provided crucial direction, resour

Couples' decision-making on post-partum family planning and antenatal counselling in Uganda: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Although health workers have been trained to provide post-partum family planning (PPFP), uptake remains low in Uganda. An important reason is that women want the agreement of their partner, who is often absent at the time of delivery. In order to address this, we aimed to understand the views of couples and explore barriers and facilitators to implementation of antenatal couples' counselling on PPFP in Uganda. METHODS: We conducted individual interviews with a purposive sample of 12 postpartum and 3 antenatal couples; and 34 focus groups with a total of 323 participants (68 adoles

Preparing for renal replacement therapy in patients with the Ebola virus disease.

The Ebola virus disease (EVD) is a serious illness characterized by fever, severe vomiting and diarrhea, and, in severe cases, multi-organ failure requiring mechanical ventilation and renal replacement therapy. The current outbreak has centered in West Africa and affected over 15,000 individuals. EVD is transmitted by direct contact with blood or other infectious bodily fluid, and as such, numerous heath care workers caring for patients with EVD have become infected. During the current outbreak, a number of patients have received advanced supportive care for EVD in Europe and North America and

Strengthening nationally led approaches to new product introduction for HIV prevention.

As the pipeline of new HIV prevention technologies (including long-acting injectables, vaginal rings, antibody infusions, and, potentially, vaccines) expands careful planning is needed to ensure these innovations are effectively and equitably introduced within public health systems. Such planning is particularly important because the introduction and scale-up of HIV prevention tools has historically been hampered by insufficient national ownership, implementation in pilot settings that do not reflect the realities of broader public health systems, insufficient community engagement, and fragmen
