Utilizing Geospatial Mapping to Identify High-Need Areas for Pelvic Health Rehabilitation and Inform Strategic Health System Planning.

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic floor dysfunction detrimentally impacts function. Pelvic Health Rehabilitation (PHR) is a first-line, non-invasive treatment. However, access to PHR services is deficient due to lack of trained rehabilitation providers, limited public awareness of its value, and knowledge gaps among potential referral sources. The purpose of this project was to (1) use geospatial mapping to identify areas of need for PHR services in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and (2) apply the results to create a feedback loop to guide VHA strategic planning. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Veteran d

An assessment of non-communicable diseases, diabetes, and related risk factors in the territory of American Samoa: a systems perspective.

Non-communicable diseases (NCD) have been identified as a health emergency in the US-affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI).1 This assessment, funded by the National Institutes of Health, was conducted in American Samoa and describes the burden of selected NCDs (ie, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, stroke, and chronic kidney disease); and assesses the system of service capacity and activities regarding service delivery, data collection and reporting as well as identifies the issues needing to be addressed. Findings reveal that nutrient-poor diet, lack of physical activity, and other lifestyl

A Comparison of Veterans with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and with Both Disorders: Understanding Multimorbidity.

INTRODUCTION: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common military service-related conditions diagnosed both singly and together in veterans returning from recent military conflicts overseas. The impact of these disorders in real-world Veterans Health Administration practice has not been studied extensively, and few studies have examined the association of these disorders both by themselves and together with sociodemographic characteristics, psychiatric and medical comorbidities, health service utilization, and psychotropic medication fills. This stu

Integration of testing for, prevention of, and access to treatment for HIV infection: state and local perspectives.

Individuals vary by socioeconomic status, race, geographic location, access to health care, risk for exposure to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and other co-occurring conditions, making it difficult to reach those who are at high risk for HIV infection. At the state and local levels, health departments often struggle to provide HIV prevention and care services, because of inadequate funding, fragmented systems, and a host of federal and state regulations. State and local health departments, however, have become adept at providing a patchwork of services despite these challenges. This repo

Supervised Injecting Room Cohort Study (SIRX): study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Supervised injecting facilities (SIFs) are designed to reduce the harms associated with injecting drug use and improve access to health and support services for people who need them. The Supervised Injecting Room Cohort Study (SIRX) aims to provide evidence of the effects, including cost-effectiveness, of a SIF embedded within a community health service, the Melbourne Medically Supervised Injecting Room (MSIR), which has a range of integrated harm reduction, health and social support services on-site. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The SIRX study design involves two prospective cohort stud

The dangerous precedent of censoring scientific dissemination.

The American Transplant Congress (ATC) is the largest national transplant meeting in the United States jointly sponsored by the American Society of Transplantation and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. The 2024 ATC was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania during which a number of peer-reviewed scientific abstracts were censored from the program by the Health Resources and Services Administration. These abstract presentations were redacted from the program for perceived conflict with current government policy effectively restricting dissemination of highly rated findings and discussion

US Hemophilia Treatment Center population trends 1990-2010: patient diagnoses, demographics, health services utilization.

For several decades, US government agencies have partially supported regional networks of Hemophilia Treatment Centers (HTC). HTC multidisciplinary teams provide comprehensive and coordinated diagnosis, treatment, prevention, education, outreach and surveillance services to improve the health of people with genetic bleeding disorders. However, national data are scarce on HTC-patient population trends and services. The aim of the study was to examine national trends over the past 20 years in patient diagnoses, demographics and health services utilization among the Health Resources and Services

Recovery-oriented inpatient mental health care and readmission.

OBJECTIVE: This article examines the relationship between inpatient mental health units' adherence to recovery-oriented care and 30-day patient readmission. METHOD: The sample included patients admitted to one of 34 Veterans Health Administration inpatient mental health units. Recovery-oriented care was assessed using interviews and site visits. Patient characteristics and readmission data were derived from administrative data. FINDINGS: Overall recovery orientation was not associated with readmission. Exploratory analyses found higher scores on a subsample of items pertaining to inpatient t

[The surveillance of nonspecific prevention of infectious diseases and the tasks of its improvement].

Provision of sanitary-and-epidemiological well-being in the Russian Federation is one of the major priorities of policy of the state. In the country, the implementation of a package of organizational, preventive, and antiepidemic measures has made the sanitary-and-epidemiological situation stable. In the Russian Federation, the national plan of measures for 2005-2007 has been approved and is being implemented by the joint WHO measles control program by 2010. The recent noticeable decrease in the morbidity of measles in the Russian Federation suggests that the disease may be the third infection

Participation in the survey was voluntary and the information was collected using anonymous telephone interviews. RESULTS: The utilization of health care services was low, particularly in rural areas. This under-utilization of services correlated with low income of t

Reducing Frequent Utilization of Psychiatric Emergency Services Among Veterans While Maintaining Quality of Care.

OBJECTIVE: Use of psychiatric emergency services in emergency departments (EDs) and inpatient psychiatry units contributes substantially to the cost of mental health care. Among patients who utilize psychiatric emergency services, a small percentage ("high utilizers") contributes a disproportionate share of the total cost, yet little is known about the context of care for these patients. This study employed qualitative methods to identify barriers to and facilitators of reducing use of psychiatric emergency services among high utilizers. METHODS: Semistructured phone interviews were conducted

Evaluating the Impact of Prevention and Early Intervention Activities on the Mental Health of California's Population.

In 2004, California voters passed the Mental Health Services Act, which was intended to transform California's community mental health system from a crisis-driven system to one that included a focus on prevention and wellness. The vision was that prevention and early intervention (PEI) services comprised the first step in a continuum of services designed to identify early symptoms and prevent mental illness from becoming severe and disabling. Twenty percent of the act's funding was dedicated to PEI services. The act identified seven negative outcomes that PEI programs were intended to reduce:

Qualitative assessment of evidence-informed adolescent mental health policymaking in India: insights from project SAMA.

BACKGROUND: The importance of evidence-informed health policymaking is widely recognized. However, many low- and middle-income countries lack evidence-informed mental health policies due to insufficient data, stigma or lack of resources. Various policies address adolescent mental health in India, but published knowledge on their evidence-informed nature is limited. In this paper, we report results of our analysis of the role of evidence in adolescent mental health policymaking in India. METHODS: This paper reports findings from the document analysis of key policy documentation (n = 10) and in

Children with special health care needs program: urban/rural comparisons.

The purposes of this study were to: (1) describe both the urban and rural clients who received services from the Indiana Children with Special Health Care Needs program (CSHCN) including both demographic and clinical characteristics; (2) conduct a health care needs assessment of the CSHCN program clients in both urban and rural areas; and (3) measure the perceived quality and adequacy of the CSHCN program services.
