Functional neuroanatomy of sustained memory encoding performance in healthy aging and in Alzheimer's disease.

The aim of our study was to examine brain networks involved with sustaining memory encoding performance in healthy aging and in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Since different brain regions are affected by degradation in these two conditions, it might be conceivable that different compensation mechanisms occur to keep up memory performance in aging and in AD. Using an event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI) design and a correlation analysis, 8 patients suffering from AD and 29 elderly control subjects were scanned while they studied a list of words for a subsequent memory test. In…

Cognitive Sarcopenia: Prevalence and the Risk for Mortality and Healthy Aging in the KORA-Age Study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive sarcopenia, defined by this study as the co-existence of sarcopenia and cognitive impairment, has been frequently reported in older adults, while we hypothesize that the co-existence increases the risk for adverse outcomes in the older general population. METHODS: This study included 1055 participants aged 65-93 years from the population-based cohort Cooperative Health Research in the Region Augsburg (KORA)-Age (2008/9). At baseline, probable sarcopenia (i.e., low grip strength) and confirmed sarcopenia (i.e., probable sarcopenia plus low muscle mass) were defined accord

Mediterranean Diet-Based Sustainable Healthy Diet and Multicomponent Training Combined Intervention Effect on Body Composition, Anthropometry, and Physical Fitness in Healthy Aging.

BACKGROUND: Diet and exercise interventions have been associated with improved body composition and physical fitness. However, evidence regarding their combined effects in older adults is scarce. This study aimed to investigate the impact of a combined 12-week Mediterranean diet-based sustainable healthy diet (SHD) and multicomponent training (MT) intervention on body composition, anthropometry, and physical fitness in older adults. METHODS: Diet intervention groups received a weekly SHD food supply and four sessions, including a SHD culinary practical workshop. The exercise program included

Gut microbiome and healthy ageing: a systematic review of literature.

The gut microbiome undergoes compositional and functional changes with ageing. However, microbial signatures specifically associated with healthy ageing, independent of age-related diseases, remain poorly defined. This systematic review aimed to identify compositional and functional features of the gut microbiome associated with healthy ageing. Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, a systematic search was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science and ScienceDirect for studies published up to January 2026. The search strategy focused on gut microb

Strengthening muscle for healthy ageing: innovative treatments for sarcopenia.

Millions of people worldwide suffer from sarcopenia, a clinically recognized syndrome that is defined as the age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength. Sarcopenia reduces mobility, leads to falls and fractures, and increases the risk of death, posing an ever-increasing health-care and economic burden to society. There are currently no approved therapies for the syndrome, partly owing to its multifactorial aetiology, highlighting the need for therapies with pleiotropic beneficial effects on muscle function. Increased understanding of the cellular, metabolic and molecular mechanisms

Relationship Between Structure and Age in Healthy Achilles Tendons.

Age is an important factor to consider with Achilles tendon injury, as variability in tendon structure during developmental growth and aging influence lower limb function and mobility. However, the overlap in structural alterations with aging and Achilles tendon injury makes it unclear which structural changes are related to age separate from tendon pathology. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between structure and age in healthy Achilles tendons. Healthy Achilles tendons from 389 children and adults (8-79 years) were included in this retrospective analysis. Achille

Fostering healthy cognitive ageing in people living with HIV.

Prevalence and incidence of HIV among people aged 50 years and older continue to rise worldwide, generating increasing awareness among care providers, scientists, and the HIV community about the importance of brain health in older adults with HIV. Many age-related factors that adversely affect brain health can occur earlier and more often among people with HIV, including epigenetic ageing, chronic medical conditions (eg, cardiovascular disease), and age-related syndromes (eg, frailty). Extensive dialogue between HIV community leaders, health-care providers, and scientists has led to the develo

Ergothioneine: an underrecognised dietary micronutrient required for healthy ageing?

Ergothioneine is a naturally occurring amino acid and thiol antioxidant found in high amounts in mushrooms and fermented foods. Humans and animals acquire ergothioneine from the diet through the pH-dependent activity of a membrane transporter, the large solute carrier 22A member 4 (SLC22A4), expressed on the apical membrane of the small intestine. The SLC22A4 transporter also functions in the renal reabsorption of ergothioneine in the kidney, with avid absorption and retention of ergothioneine from the diet observed in both animals and humans. Ergothioneine is capable of scavenging a diverse r

Musculoskeletal stiffness is common in healthy adults and increases with age.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE: Musculoskeletal stiffness is a common feature in rheumatologic inflammatory diseases but little is known about background joint stiffness in the healthy population. The aim of this survey was to determine the variation in musculoskeletal stiffness with age in a cohort of healthy adults using a patient reported outcome instrument designed to assess stiffness in rheumatoid arthritis. METHODS: Healthy subjects ≥18 years old were enrolled at two sites. Those with a diagnosis of rheumatological disease were excluded. Each subject completed a 21-item questionnaire designed t

Imaging the effects of age on proactive control in healthy adults.

Previous research has reported reduced efficiency in reactive inhibition, along with reduced brain activations, in older adults. The current study investigated age-related behavioral and neural changes in proactive inhibition, and whether age may influence the relationship between proactive and reactive inhibition. One-hundred-and-forty-nine adults (18 to 72 years) underwent fMRI while performing a stop signal task (SST). Proactive inhibition was defined by the sequential effect, the correlation between the estimated probability of stop signal - p(Stop) - and go trial reaction time (goRT). P(S

Jaw sensorimotor control in healthy adults and effects of ageing.

The oro-facial sensorimotor system is a unique system significantly distinguished from the spinal sensorimotor system. The jaw muscles are involved in mastication, swallowing and articulatory speech movements and their integration with respiration. These sensorimotor functions are vital for sustaining life and necessitate complex neuromuscular processing to provide for exquisite sensorimotor control of numerous oro-facial muscles. The function of the jaw muscles in relation to sensorimotor control of these movements may be subject to ageing-related declines. This review will focus on periphera

H2S: A New Approach to Lifespan Enhancement and Healthy Ageing?

Ageing, a progressive structural and functional decline, is considered to be a major risk factor for virtually all ageing-associated pathologies and disabilities, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, stroke, diabetes, atherosclerosis and certain cancers. Biogerontology research has now been largely directed towards finding novel drug targets to decelerate the ageing process and attain healthy ageing in order to delay the onset of all ageing-related diseases. H2S has been reported to exert vasodilatory, antioxidant, antiapoptotic and anti-inflammatory actions and has been shown t

Periodontal care as a fundamental step for an active and healthy ageing.

In the industrialized part of the world, an increasing number of people live the old age without too many restrictions due to illness or physiological impairment. This group is known as the young elderly. On the contrary, a consistent part of seniors develops a greater number of medical conditions and become more and more dependent, these are the old elderly. The first cause of tooth lost in industrialized word is periodontitis that generally strikes people older than 40 years and determines serious detriment of the stomatognatic organ. Smoking and stress are risk factors for periodontitis tha

Influence of age on bronchoscopic findings in healthy beagle dogs.

The aims of this study were to evaluate the effect of age on bronchoscopic features and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) cellularity in dogs. Thirty healthy beagle dogs from three age groups were included: young dogs (10 months to 4.5 years of age; n=8), middle-aged dogs (5-8 years old; n=13) and older dogs (>8 years; n=9). Haematology, thoracic radiography, bronchoscopy and bronchoalveolar lavage were performed; bronchoscopic findings were scored and BALF total and differential cell counts were determined. The total bronchoscopic score was higher in older dogs; these dogs had more irregula

Age and cystatin C in healthy adults: a collaborative study.

BACKGROUND: Kidney function declines with age, but a substantial portion of this decline has been attributed to the higher prevalence of risk factors for kidney disease at older ages. The effect of age on kidney function has not been well described in a healthy population across a wide age spectrum. METHODS: The authors pooled individual-level cross-sectional data from 18 253 persons aged 28-100 years in four studies: the Cardiovascular Health Study; the Health, Aging and Body Composition Study; the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis and the Prevention of Renal and Vascular End-Stage Disea

Hematologic values in healthy and small for gestational age newborns.

Many of the published reports of reference values in neonates are found in older medical literature. Recognition of abnormalities in blood cell morphology and hematologic parameters depend on well-established normative data; it is essential that each neonatal medical unit have its own reference ranges. We give the umbilical cord blood complete blood count reference values from 142 healthy, appropriate for gestational age (AGA) newborns and 58 small for gestational age (SGA) newborns (term and preterm). Our data, obtained by automated blood cell counter analysis of umbilical cord blood samples

Suxamethonium-induced rhabdomyolysis in a healthy middle-aged man.

A 43-year-old man developed rhabdomyolysis after uvulo- palatopharyngoplasty. After induction with thiopentone and suxamethonium the anesthesia was maintained with halothane. The patient responded to treatment and made an uneventful recovery. In earlier reports of rhabdomyolysis after general anaesthesia with halothane and suxamethonium almost all the patients had malignant hyperthermia (MH) or muscular dystrophy. About 50% of malignant hyperthermia patients carry a mutation in the RYR1 gene. Our patient did not have mutations in the four MH-associated genes tested, but the total amount of dif

Are the Healthy Vulnerable? Cytomegalovirus Seropositivity in Healthy Adults Is Associated With Accelerated Epigenetic Age and Immune Dysregulation.

BACKGROUND: Evaluating age as a risk factor for susceptibility to infectious diseases, particularly coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), is critical. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) serologic prevalence increases with age and associates with inflammatory-mediated diseases in the elderly. However, little is known regarding the subclinical impact of CMV and risk it poses to healthy older adults. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic we conducted a study to determine the association of CMV to biologic age and immune dysregulation. METHODS: Community-dwelling, healthy adults older than 60 years were evaluated usi
