BACKGROUND: Studies are lacking on the associations between organisational changes and mental disorders and the underlying mechanisms. The objectives were to explore the associations between organisational changes and depression, measured using a validated instrument, and the mediating role of psychosocial work exposures.
METHODS: The study relied on the national representative sample of 25,977 employees of the French SUMER survey. The PHQ-9 instrument was used to measure depression. Weighted robust Poisson regression analyses were performed to explore the associations between organisational

The objective of this review was to scope the current evidence base related to three exposure assessment concepts: frequency, intensity, and duration (latency) for cleaning and disinfection exposures in healthcare and subsequent work-related asthma risks. A search strategy was developed addressing intersections of four main concepts: (1) work-related asthma; (2) occupation (healthcare workers/nurses); (3) cleaning and disinfection; and (4) exposure. Three databases were searched: Embase, PubMed, and the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) database. Data were extra

Trivalent chromium (Cr) is an environmental contaminant, which is extensively used in tanning industries throughout the world and causes various forms of health hazards in tannery workers. Therefore, a cross-sectional study design was used to evaluate the DNA damage and oxidative stress condition in tannery workers exposed to Cr in North India. The study population comprised 100 male tanners in the exposed group and 100 healthy males (no history of Cr exposure) in the comparable control group. Baseline characteristics including age, smoking, alcohol consumption habits and duration of exposure

Restorative sleep and morning sleepiness are essential factors associated with daytime functioning among workers, yet their variability and determinants remain unclear. Previous studies have primarily focused on either subjective or objective sleep measures, with many cross-sectional investigations, although fewer longitudinal studies have considered the interaction with psychological and chronobiological factors. The aim of this study was to investigate both subjective and objective sleep parameters, along with psychological and chronobiological factors, and examine their influence on daily r

OBJECTIVES: To quantify mortality and cancer incidence among Queensland coal mine workers.
METHODS: A cohort of coal mine workers from Queensland was linked to Australian national death and cancer registries for the period 1983-2020. Standardised mortality (SMR) and cancer incidence (SIR) ratios were calculated for men and women compared with Australian rates. Accidental deaths, suicides and melanoma incidence were also compared with Queensland rates.
RESULTS: There were 4957 deaths among 164 622 men and 211 among 24 389 women. Overall mortality was lower than the national population for men

Introduction Exposure to dust due to stone quarrying can cause severe respiratory ailments. Besides lung problems, research shows that exposure to quarry dust may also increase the risk of health problems affecting the heart, liver, kidney, central nervous system, and other organs. Despite the fact that a lot of studies have been reported on the respiratory system, our aim was to explore the evidence on the association between occupational exposure to quarry dust and its effect on renal health. Methodology This study was conducted on 75 quarry workers and 45 healthy matched controls were recru

This paper uses Arlie Hochschild's (1983) concept of emotion management and "surface" and "deep acting" to explore how sex workers separate and distance themselves from their public role. Experiences of stigmatisation prevail among sex workers and how stigma is resisted or managed has an impact on their health. In-depth interviews were carried out between August 2006 and April 2007 with 58 sex workers in five cities in New Zealand following decriminalisation of the sex industry. Most participants drew on ideas of professionalism in sustaining a psychological distance between their private and

The aim of this study was to estimate cancer mortality and incidence risk associated with external radiation exposure in the BNFL cohort of nuclear workers and to determine if these risks are modified by potential for internal exposure. The cohort comprised 64,956 individuals who were employed at the four study sites between 1946 and 2002, followed up to 2005. External radiation exposures as measured by personal dosimeters (generally 'film badges') were available for 42,431 individuals classified as 'radiation workers'. Poisson regression models were used to investigate cancer mortality and in

Physicians have privileged information regarding the importance of leading a healthy and drug-free lifestyle, but in everyday reality, they are subject to extreme stressors (work stress, compassion fatigue, burnout syndrome) that have a profound emotional impact. As a result, it is not uncommon for physicians to present substance use disorders and dependencies. Recently, greater attention has been paid to specific factors that may lead to substance use disorder. Despite these efforts, there is a lack of prevention policies and substance use disorders are excluded in the list of occupational di

Heat stress is an occupational health problem affecting Man in diverse, hostile environments ranging from deep mining to outer space. Healthy, young military recruits and industrial workers exposed to hot, humid environments are typically at risk. The International Classification of Diseases classifies heat disorders into 10 separate entities, of which the most clinically significant are heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The latter is a medical emergency of the first order. Clinical management hinges upon early treatment based on a high index of suspicion. Effective preventive meas

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Noise is considered to be a non-specific stressor which generally causes physiological and psychological effects in an individual. Many occupations involve workers being subjected to loud noise levels without adequate protective measures. The study was done to document the changes, if any, in the nocturnal sleep architecture of healthy persons exposed to loud occupational noise during daytime.
METHODS: The study was a retrospective cohort design wherein three groups of eight subjects each, exposed to continuous occupational background noise levels of >75dB for 1-2 yea

BACKGROUND: Exposure to aluminium compounds, such as fluorides in gaseous and particulate form, places people who work in potrooms at risk for respiratory symptoms. Workers in potrooms, however, also are exposed to a number of other air contaminants. In this study, we present the first report of a dose-response relationship after exposure to potassium aluminium tetrafluoride (KAlF(4)) and the influence of smoking and atopy.
MATERIALS: All workers (308) from an industrial plant that used KAlF as soldering flux were invited to participate in the study. In all, 289 workers participated and 118 e

BACKGROUND: Tetrahydrothiophene (THT) is frequently used to odorize natural (city) gas. Only sparse data on adverse health effects of THT on humans are available.
METHODS: We performed a literature search and clinical investigations including case history and cardiopulmonary diagnostic tests in two symptomatic THT-exposed outpatients.
RESULTS: The two THT-exposed city workers developed transient neurologic symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, headaches, as well as skin and mucosa irritation, chronic rhinitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, arterial hypertension, and cardiac arrhythmia.

Workers of the Commissariat for Atomic Energy and Alternative Energy (CEA) may be potentially exposed to tritium over long periods. We aimed to assess the effect of tritium exposure on mortality in a cohort of employees followed by radiotoxicological monitoring. A total of 1,746 employees who worked for at least six months at one of three CEA centers were included between 1962 and 2011 (median follow-up 29.6 years). The cumulative dose of tritium was based on the quantification of tritium present from urinary excretion monitoring data from the beginning of occupational exposure to the end of s

Shift work is increasingly common in modern societies but is strongly associated with misalignments of natural circadian rhythms, which may negatively impact dietary behaviour and psychosocial well-being. Chronotype, an individual's natural sleep-wake preference, influences adaptation to shift work and its associated lifestyle challenges. This systematic review aimed to examine the relationship between chronotype on both eating behaviour and psychosocial well-being among shift workers. A systematic search was conducted in accordance with PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Literature searches were perform

BACKGROUND: Several studies have shown that Catholic nuns have a different mortality experience than women of similar age in the general population. We had a unique opportunity to evaluate mortality patterns of nuns identified in an occupational study of nearly 145,000 radiologic technologists (73% female).
METHODS: A total of 1,103 women were classified as nuns based on their titles of "Sister" or "SR". Their mortality experience was compared to other female radiologic technologists and to U.S. white females.
RESULTS: Five hundred eighty-three nuns (53%) were deceased as of January 1, 1995.

BACKGROUND: Occupational irritant hand dermatitis (OIHD) is an important cause of discomfort in the working population. Different preventive measures are in place but it is not clear how effective these are.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effect of interventions for preventing OIHD in healthy people who work in occupations where the skin is at risk of damage.
SEARCH STRATEGY: In May 2010, we searched the Cochrane Skin Group Specialised Register, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials in The Cochrane Library, MEDLlNE and EMBASE. Conference proceedings, and ongoing trials registers were
