Pragmatics and Peer Relationships Among Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Hearing Adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: The goals of the current study were to (1) examine differences in pragmatic abilities and peer relationship behaviors among deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) adolescents who use spoken language, in comparison with their hearing peers; and (2) explore the contribution of pragmatic skills and speech (ie, articulation and intelligibility [AI]) to social aspects of school functioning among DHH and typically hearing adolescents. METHODS: Thirty-three DHH adolescents and 34 adolescents with typical hearing participated. All DHH adolescents attended mainstream school settings and used spoke…

LoCHAid: An ultra-low-cost hearing aid for age-related hearing loss.

Hearing aids are the primary tool in non-medical rehabilitation for individuals with hearing loss. While the costs of the electronic components have reduced substantially, the cost of a hearing aid has risen steadily to the point that it has become unaffordable for the majority of the population with Age-Related Hearing Loss (ARHL) especially for those residing in low- and middle-income countries. Here, we present an ultra-low-cost, affordable and accessible hearing aid device ('LoCHAid'), specifically targeted towards treating ARHL in elderly patients. The LoCHAid components cost 98 cents (< …

The chinchilla animal model for hearing science and noise-induced hearing loss.

The chinchilla animal model for noise-induced hearing loss has an extensive history spanning more than 50 years. Many behavioral, anatomical, and physiological characteristics of the chinchilla make it a valuable animal model for hearing science. These include similarities with human hearing frequency and intensity sensitivity, the ability to be trained behaviorally with acoustic stimuli relevant to human hearing, a docile nature that allows many physiological measures to be made in an awake state, physiological robustness that allows for data to be collected from all levels of the auditory sy…

Quality of Life and Hearing Eight Years After Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To explore long-term hearing results, quality of life (QoL), quality of hearing (QoH), work-related stress, tinnitus, and balance problems after idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL). STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: We reviewed the audiograms of 680 patients with unilateral ISSNHL on average 8 years after the hearing impairment, and then divided the patients into two study groups based on whether their ISSNHL had recovered to normal (pure tone average [PTA] ≤ 30 dB) or not (PTA > 30 dB). The inclusion criteria were a hearing threshold decr…

Does tinnitus, hearing asymmetry, or hearing loss predispose to occupational injury risk?

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relative contributions of tinnitus, asymmetrical hearing loss, low frequency hearing loss (pure tone average of 0.5, 1, 2, 3 kHz; PTA.5123), or high frequency hearing loss (pure tone average of 4, 6 kHz; PTA46), to acute injury risk among a cohort of production and maintenance workers at six aluminum manufacturing plants, adjusting for ambient noise exposure and other recognized predictors of injury risk. DESIGN: Retrospective analysis. STUDY SAMPLE: The study considered 9920 workers employed during 2003 to 2008. The cohort consisted of 8818 workers (89%) whose co…

Historical background of bone conduction hearing devices and bone conduction hearing aids.

During the last 20 years, bone-anchored hearing aids (Baha(®)) became a familiar solution in the treatment of some types of hearing loss. The aim of this chapter is to present the different historical steps which have permitted the production of this new bone conduction hearing device. The recognition of bone conduction hearing is old and was known at least in Antiquity. During the Renaissance, Girolamo Cardano demonstrated a method by which sound may be transmitted to the ear by means of a rod or the shaft of a spear held between one's teeth: this was the beginning of teeth stimulators to imp…

Profound mixed hearing loss: bone-anchored hearing aid system or cochlear implant?

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated 5 patients who were changed over from a Baha Cordelle to a cochlear implant (CI). Moreover, the level of phoneme sc … this PS65 as the cutoff level for switching from a Baha Cordelle to a CI. When patients with mixed hearing loss were using the Baha Cordelle, the PS65 of 42% was obtained at a mean sensorineural hearing loss component of about 70 dB hearing level (HL). This 70-dB HL component was used to consider Baha Cordelle users for cochlear implantation. The results …

Prognostic model for predicting hearing recovery in idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

HYPOTHESIS: To aid in realistic counseling of patients at the time of their first visit concerning their chances for recovery, we created a simple prognostic model for predicting hearing recovery in idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL). BACKGROUND: An important element of research on ISSHL is to identify prognostic factors for this disease. Many studies have described predictive indicators to identify patients with a good prognosis needing no or minimal treatment. Only a few of these studies have included a model for calculating the probability for patient recovery, which may …

Hearing preservation in patients with vestibular schwannomas with sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated hearing outcomes in patients with sudden hearing loss and vestibular schwannoma who underwent a hearing preservation operation for tumor resection in an effort to determine whether a history of sudden sensorineural hearing loss has an impact on subsequent hearing preservation surgery. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of 45 patients operated between 1990 and 1998. Patients were divided into "Recovery" (n = 22) and "No Recovery" (n = 23) groups based on preoperative hearing recovery. Hearing preservation was assessed using the AAO-HNS hearing classification system. R…

Effect of conductive hearing loss and middle ear surgery on binaural hearing.

This study investigated whether conductive hearing loss reduces normal binaural hearing advantages and whether binaural hearing advantages are normal in patients who have had hearing thresholds improved by middle ear surgery. Binaural hearing was assessed at a test frequency of 500 Hz using the masking level difference and interaural time discrimination thresholds. Results indicated that binaural hearing is often poor in conductive lesion patients and that the reduction in binaural hearing is not always consistent with a simple attenuation of the acoustic signal. Poor binaural hearing sometime…

Noise-induced hearing loss in shipyard workers with unilateral conductive hearing loss.

In a study of 6500 workers in the shipbuilding industry, 8 subjects were found to have unilateral conductive hearing impairment established before the noise exposure period and without recurrent attacks of acute or chronic infection or clinical diagnosis of otosclerosis. All subjects demonstrated a more pronounced sensorineural hearing loss at 4.0 kHz in the ear with normal middle ear function. The results show the value of even a small permanent conductive hearing loss for protection against noise-induced hearing loss. The observations are discussed in relation to the role of individual varia…

Characteristics of Hearing Aid Use in Adolescents Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

PURPOSE: Children who use hearing aids show large individual differences in the amount of time they wear their devices, but the vast majority of research studies have focused on infants and preschoolers who are deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH). There is limited empirical evidence regarding hearing aid use in adolescents or published data on adolescents' attitudes toward hearing aids. The overarching aim of the current study was to characterize hearing aid use in adolescents who are D/HH. METHOD: One hundred twenty-nine adolescents who are D/HH (12-19 years old) and their parents completed ques…

Deep phenotyping to understand hearing and hearing disorders: Protocol for a feasibility study.

Globally, hearing loss affects around 1.5 billion people, while tinnitus is estimated to impact around 740 million. More research is urgently needed to address the challenges presented by hearing loss, tinnitus, and other hearing-related conditions. Our plans for a Nottingham Hearing BioResource, providing research-willing volunteers and comprehensive tests of hearing and ear health repeated over time, has the potential to accelerate the field. The protocol described here is a feasibility study for this BioResource, specifically addressing questions of recruitment from the general population (…
