Association of self-reported hearing loss and tinnitus with brain structure and cognitive function: a population-based cross-sectional analysis from the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP).

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss has been reported as a major, potentially modifiable risk factor for dementia and often co-occurs with tinnitus. Both conditions are prevalent and have been linked to brain health and cognitive decline. However, evidence from studies containing the whole age span of adults remains limited. Therefore, this study investigated associations of hearing loss and tinnitus with brain structure and cognitive performance in a large population-based cohort from northeastern Germany. METHODS: Data from the baseline investigation of 4,420 participants (age 20-84 years) for the SHI

Effect of a Community Health Worker-Delivered Personal Sound Amplification Device on Self-Perceived Communication Function in Older Adults With Hearing Loss: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Age-related hearing loss that impairs daily communication is associated with adverse health outcomes, but use of hearing aids by older adults is low and disparities exist. OBJECTIVE: To test whether an affordable, accessible hearing care intervention, delivered by community health workers using over-the-counter hearing technology, could improve self-perceived communication function among older adults with hearing loss compared with a wait-list control. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Open-label randomized clinical trial conducted between April 2018 and October 2019 with 3-mont

Prevention of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss In Vivo: Continuous Application of Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 and Its Effect on Inner Ear Synapses, Auditory Function and Perilymph Proteins.

As noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a leading cause of occupational diseases, there is an urgent need for the development of preventive and therapeutic interventions. To avoid user-compliance-based problems occurring with conventional protection devices, the pharmacological prevention is currently in the focus of hearing research. Noise exposure leads to an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the cochlea. This way antioxidant agents are a promising option for pharmacological interventions. Previous animal studies reported preventive as well as therapeutic effects of Insulin-like g

[Hearing results following tympanoplasty (author's transl)].

Tympanoplasty can produce a stable hearing improvement in many patients with chronically inflamed ears. In our series of patients, severe damage to the inner ear following surgery occurred in 3% patients and was associated with a hearing loss of greater than 15 dB. Complete hearing loss occurred in 0.2% of the patients reviewed. In patients with an intact ossicular chain, simple myringoplasty is associated with the best results. Loss of the stapedial arches affects the postoperative air-bone gap most significantly, while loss of the manubrium mallei or the creation of a radical mastoid cavity

Effects of unilateral hearing loss upon educational achievement.

Recent evidence suggests that children with relatively minor hearing impairments may be at a developmental disadvantage. A survey of over 42,000 students was conducted and children with unilateral hearing losses were identified on the basis of audiometric testing. A comparison of the standardized achievement test scores obtained by the unilateral hearers, using class and national norms with a sibling control group, yielded no significant differences although the hearing-impaired group scored lower on all subscales. There were sex differences observed, however, with male unilateral hearers perf

[Hearing disorders in Paget's disease].

The audiometric data of 41 patients with Paget's disease of the bone show that hearing loss exceeds the age-related presbycusis in patients with deformities of the temporal bone as demonstrated by X-ray (27%). The usual type of hearing loss is a sensorineural one. 80% of these patients showed hair cell damage, 32% of them a retrocochlear lesion, depending on the degree of deformity of the temporal bone. Conductive hearing loss of the otosclerosis type was found in only 20%. The Paget-related hearing loss can be regarded as a consequence of the deformation occurring both at the bone surrounding

Parent-Reported Ease of Listening in Preschool-Aged Children With Bilateral and Unilateral Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVES: Evidence from school-aged children suggests that the ease with which children listen varies with the presence of hearing loss and the acoustic environment despite the use of devices like hearing aids. However, little is known about the ease of listening in preschool-aged children with hearing loss-an age at which rapid learning occurs and increased listening difficulty or effort may diminish the required capacity to learn new skills. To this end, the objectives of the present study were to (i) assess parent-reported aided ease of listening as a function of hearing loss configuratio

[The solitary ear].

An unique ear refers to those cases of individuals with an air and/or bone conduction allowing a serviceable hearing in one ear, being the other one totally lost, owing to any disease. So it is relatively frequent patients presenting only one ear normal, being the other one deaf. The puzzle rises when the sole running good ear must be operated, for whichever pathology. It may be that these various circumstances were: double cholesteatoma, cholesteatoma with extreme loss of hearing, otosclerosis with total deafness and even patients with chronic middle ear otitis and progressive impairment of b

[Unilateral deafness (author's transl)].

Unilateral conductive deafness has a readily determined aetiology in most cases. In contrast, unilateral sensorineural hearing loss requires more refined and extensive investigation. The most frequent causes of unilateral sensorineural hearing loss in our patients were sudden deafness, Menière's disease, cranio-vertebral dysplasia and cerebellopontine angle tumors. Early diagnosis of acoustic neuroma or other lesions of the internal auditory meatus or cerebellopontine angle requires special attention. The definitive diagnosis of these tumors often demands intensive clinical investigation but a

[Clinical features associated with sudden hearing loss in children].

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss is usually unilateral, and the cause is not identified in most adult cases. However, a specific cause has frequently been found in the case of children, in whom idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISHL) is comparatively rare. We investigated 20 cases of acute unilateral sensorineural hearing loss in children associated with a certain disease, but which was first diagnosed as ISHL. Thirteen patients aged 6 to 16 years old were diagnosed as having psychogenic (functional) hearing loss. Discrepancies in behavioral and objective tests are most valuable w

[Sound lateralization regarding amplitude and time factors in various forms of hearing loss].

The ability to localize the sound source was investigated in 70 patients with hypoacusis of various type and degree, using interaural differences in time and intensity. The dichotic method of signal presentation was employed which made it possible to separately vary sound excitation of each ear. Isolated use of interaural differences in terms of time and amplitude was investigated by measuring lateralization thresholds, i.e. minimal interaural differences in time and intensity perceived as a displacement of the acoustic image from the head midline. It was found that lateralization of the acous

Insufficient nutrient intake in individuals with disabling hearing loss and the restoration of nutritional sufficiency in hearing aid users.

Hearing loss affects some nutrient intake. Disabling hearing loss may exacerbate these issues. We aimed to evaluate nutrient intake and assess deficiencies based on functional hearing status. The study included 6907 participants with information on demographic factors, nutrient intake, weight, height, disease status, and hearing level in the eighth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, conducted from 2019 to 2021. We categorized the participants into 3 groups based on their functional hearing status: bilateral hearing, unilateral hearing, and disabling hearing loss. The disab
