Carotid body tumor associated with complete heart block: A rare case report with long-term follow-up.

INTRODUCTION: Carotid body tumor (CBT) is one of the most common paragangliomas in the head and neck region, accounting for only 0.6 % of tumors in this area. Here, we present a rare case of CBT associated with congenital complete heart block (CHB). CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 47-year-old female with a history of left neck and ear pain, accompanied by a gradually enlarging neck mass over 2.5 years. Following initial evaluations and multiple differential diagnoses, CT angiography revealed an oval-shaped mass measuring 30 × 50 mm at the left carotid bifurcation, confirming a Sham

PET applications in pediatrics.

This article summarizes the major PET studies which have been performed in pediatric patients to elucidate and characterize diseases and normal development. Issues special for the application of the technique in children, such as dosimetry, patient preparation, and image acquisition are discussed. Studies of central nervous system (CNS) development and pathology, including epilepsy, intraventricular hemorrhage, neonatal asphyxia, tumors, and effects on the CNS from treatment of other tumors are reviewed. These have contributed information fundamental to our understanding of CNS development and

Periarticular histiocytic sarcoma with heart metastasis in a cat.

A 4-year-old intact female domestic short-haired cat was referred for recommendations about adjuvant medical treatment 1 month after left forelimb amputation due to periarticular histiocytic sarcoma (HS). At presentation, physical abnormalities were limited to enlarged ipsilateral superficial cervical and axillary lymph nodes. Routine blood analysis, abdominal ultrasound, and thoracic radiology were unremarkable. The cat initially received lomustine without any adverse events. Four weeks later, the cat developed severe acute respiratory distress. Results of thoracic radiographs and transthorac

Composite haemangioendothelioma in the heart: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Primary cardiac neoplasm is rare and generally benign. Epithelioid haemangioendothelioma, a potentially malignant tumour of vascular origin, has been occasionally described in the heart. Composite haemangioendothelioma, characterized by a heterogeneous architecture of vascular components and usually located in soft tissue of the extremities, has only been reported twice in the heart. We herein report another case of this extremely uncommon cardiac tumour. CASE SUMMARY: Comprehensive cardiac examination of a 59-year-old female patient with palpitations and personal history of Hodgk

Clinical and genetic determinants of anthracycline-induced cardiac iron accumulation.

BACKGROUND: The involvement of iron in anthracycline cardiotoxicity is supported by extensive experimental data, and by the preventive efficacy of dexrazoxane, an iron chelator. However, no clinical evidence of anthracycline-induced cardiac iron accumulation is available and the influence of previous iron overload or of genetic factors in human-induced heart disease is largely unknown. Our aim was to test the hypothesis that anthracyclines increase iron heart concentration and that HFE genotype modulates this iron deposit. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated cardiac events, cardiac iron and

Preoperative computed tomography in femoroacetabular impingement is associated with increased risk of malignancy and other radiation-associated pathologies.

PURPOSE: Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) primarily affects young, active adults, many of whom undergo hip arthroscopy at an age when sensitivity to ionizing radiation is greatest. Routine use of computed tomography (CT) in preoperative planning remains controversial due to concerns about radiation exposure and long-term oncogenic risk. The hypothesis was that CT imaging before FAI surgery would be associated with increased risk of malignancy. METHODS: A retrospective comparative cohort study with 1:1 propensity score matching was performed using the TriNetX Research Network. Patients under

The Causal Relationship between PCSK9 Inhibitors and Malignant Tumors: A Mendelian Randomization Study Based on Drug Targeting.

Objective: This study explores the potential causal association between proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors and tumor development using Mendelian randomization (MR) based on drug targets. Methods: Instrumental variables within ±100 kb of the PCSK9 gene locus, impacting low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), were utilized for MR analysis. Coronary heart disease (CHD) served as a positive control to validate the causal relationship between PCSK9 inhibitors and various cancers. We employed reverse MR to address the reverse causation concerns. Data from positive contr

Mortality among United Kingdom servicemen who served abroad in the 1950s and 1960s.

The Registrar General's decennial supplements on occupational mortality provide only limited information on mortality in the armed forces in the United Kingdom. Mortality has therefore been studied among a group of 30,619 United Kingdom servicemen who served abroad in tropical or desert areas in the 1950s and 1960s, and who remained in the services for a total of at least five years. Mortality from all causes of death, all neoplasms, and all other known non-violent causes was lower than that expected from rates for all men in England and Wales, whereas mortality from accidents and violence was

Non-infectious thrombotic endocarditis associated with chronic rheumatic heart disease and disseminated tuberculosis.

Rheumatic heart disease is still common in developing countries and requires prompt intervention to prevent chronic complications. Vegetations in rheumatic heart disease might be due to acute episodes of rheumatic fever itself or due to either infective endocarditis (IE) or Non-infectious thrombotic endocarditis (NITE). Each form of vegetations has specific pathological characteristics on gross and microscopic examination. However, clinically IE and NITE may have overlapping signs and symptoms. A chance of misdiagnosis of NITE as culture-negative infective endocarditis is higher if the former

Hamartomatous Polyp of the Palatine Tonsil in an Adolescent: A Case Report.

A hamartoma is a benign tumor that arises from the disorganized proliferation of tissue and can occur anywhere in the body. Hamartomas are notably found in the lung, skin, heart, brain, and breast, while their occurrence in the head and neck is rare. We describe a case involving a 17-year-old male patient who presented with a mass in a unilateral palatine tonsil, discovered incidentally. The patient was treated with tonsillectomy and, after pathological review, was diagnosed with a hamartomatous polyp of the palatine tonsil. Our case report highlights this rare benign neoplasm and presents a r

Predicting Major Bleeding in Native Kidney Biopsies: From External Validation of the Universal Bleeding Score to a New Clinical Tool.

Objectives: A percutaneous native kidney biopsy remains the gold standard for diagnosing glomerular, tubulointerstitial and vascular kidney diseases. Although generally safe, it may cause major haemorrhagic complications. Using the French national registry, Kaczmarek et al. developed a simplified bleeding risk score (anaemia, female sex, heart failure, acute kidney injury; range: 0-5), achieving an AUC of 0.755 in native biopsies. We aimed to externally validate this score in a Romanian cohort and to assess whether additional clinically relevant predictors could improve discrimination for majo

A Case of Syncope Due to Intracardiac Leiomyomatosis.

We present a case of a 46-year-old female presenting with syncope. Echocardiography initially showed a right atrial mass. Further evaluation revealed a mass arising from the fundus of the uterus, with a tumor thrombus in the left gonadal vein, extending into the left renal vein and through the inferior vena cava (IVC) into the right heart across the tricuspid valve. She was managed with surgical resection, and postoperative pathology was consistent with intravenous leiomyomatosis (IVL). IVL is a rare uterine smooth muscle cell neoplasm which extends into the venous system. Gynecological tumors

Giant right atrium after mitral valve replacement: plain film findings in 15 patients.

We reviewed the radiographs of 166 patients who had undergone mitral valve replacement and found 15 (9%) with giant right atrium. It was confirmed in 13 cases by angiography and/or echocardiography. It was proved at autopsy in one case and confirmed by a Swan-Ganz catheter delineating the lateral right atrial wall in another case. Tricuspid insufficiency of varying severity was present in all patients. Progressive bulging of the right heart border on frontal radiographs and an anterior masslike density on lateral radiographs were the important findings. The bulging right heart border was seen

Low-grade Endometrial Stromal Sarcoma Presenting as a Sigmoid Mass.

Low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (LG-ESS) is a very rare mesenchymal neoplasm of the uterus. LG-ESS can recur or metastasize to extrauterine sites, such as the pelvis, peritoneal cavity, and vagina, but rarely to the lung, liver, heart, bone, and colon. A 42-year-old female patient was transferred from an outside clinic for an evaluation of constipation. EUS revealed a 5 cm hypoechoic lesion with a regular margin, probably arising from the 4th layer (muscular propria) at the sigmoid colon level. CT revealed a 7-cm homogenous enhancing mass lesion at the pelvic cavity and multiple enlarged

Adult-Type Rhabdomyoma of the Larynx: Clinicopathologic Study of an Uncommon Tumor in a Rare Location.

Rhabdomyoma is an uncommon benign mesenchymal tumor with skeletal muscle differentiation that may occur either in the heart or in extracardiac sites. Even though the head and neck region is the most common area of extracardiac rhabdomyoma, the larynx is rarely involved. We present the case of an 85-year-old woman who reported a 10-day history of breathing difficulties, dysphagia, and dysphonia. A computed tomography scan of the head and neck showed a contrast-enhanced, solid hypopharyngeal-laryngeal neoplasm with well-defined margins causing subtotal obliteration of the right pyriform sinus an

Primary epithelial malignant mesothelioma of the pericardium with deciduoid features: cytohistologic and immunohistochemical study.

Malignant mesothelioma with deciduoid features (MMWDF) is a recently characterized morphologic variant of epithelioid malignant mesothelioma, which frequently is misdiagnosed as peritoneal deciduosis or florid mesothelial hyperplasia. We report on the cytological, histological, immunohistochemical, and autopsy findings of a case of MMWDF arising in the pericardium of a 71-yr-old female patient. Cytology showed large, polygonal to round cells with pale to bright, eosinophilic cytoplasm, occasionally showing xantomatous pattern, containing a pleomorphic and vesicular nucleus with a single promin

Transarterial chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma in Fontan surgery patient.

We describe the case of a 41-year-old woman who developed a liver neoplasm due to previous Fontan surgery for a single ventricle anomaly and pacemaker implantation. She was admitted to our hospital for moderate ascites and she was affected by hepatocellular carcinoma treated by trans-arterial chemoembolization (TACE). Computed tomography showed features of chronic liver disease and 4 cm hepatic nodules with arterial enhancement. Laboratory analyses documented preserved liver function and increased levels of alpha-fetoprotein. TACE was performed obtaining complete necrosis at 4 weeks of follow

Mesothelial/Monocytic Incidental Cardiac Excrescences (MICE): An Enigmatic Cardiac Pathology.

Mesothelial/monocytic incidental cardiac excrescences (MICE) are rare, reactive tumor-like lesions of the heart. They are typically incidental findings during cardiac surgery. They can mimic thrombi or neoplasms such as myxoma, papillary fibroelastoma, and metastatic carcinoma histopathologically, leading to diagnostic confusion. We report a case of atrial MICE in a 40-year-old woman with rheumatic mitral stenosis and long-standing atrial fibrillation, who underwent mitral valve replacement following a failed percutaneous transvenous mitral commissurotomy. Histopathological examination reveale

Clinical report of a brain magnetic resonance imaging finding in Noonan syndrome.

Noonan syndrome (NS) is an autosomal dominant disease caused by aberrant up-regulated signaling through RAS GTPase. It is characterized by facial dysmorphisms, short stature, congenital heart defects, malformations of rib cage bones, bleeding problems, learning difficulties, or mild intellectual disability. Additional intracranial findings in NS patients include tumors, midline anomalies, and malformations of cortical development. In this report, we present the case of a young female patient, with a known diagnosis of Noonan syndrome that in complete well being developed two brain lesions, in
