[Main features of helminth parasitism in cattle in Ituri (Haut-Zaire). III. Geographic distribution and prevalence of the main helminths].

A necropsic survey, carried out in eleven slaughterhouses in Ituri (Haut-Zaïre), has permitted to define the geographic distribution and prevalences of the main cattle helminths. Trematodes, except the paramphistomes, had a very heterogeneous distribution. Prevalence of Fasciola gigantica ranged from 9 to 72% according to the sites, but these variations were not linked to topographic or climatologic parameters. The infection with Schistosoma bovis was much variable as well (12.5 to 72%) and seemed absent from the central high altitude area. The occurrence of Dicrocoelium hospes was restricted …

Intestinal helminths in farmed pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus): Hematological and histopathological effects.

Biosecurity in aquaculture is essential to reduce disease burden and ensure sustainability. Piaractus mesopotamicus (pacu) is a key species in South American aquaculture, yet parasitic threats to its health remain understudied. We analyzed intestinal helminth and assessed their effects on the health of 34 farmed pacu reared in intensive and semi-intensive systems in Santa Fe, Argentina, using parasitological, hematological, and histopathological approaches. Three parasite taxa were identified: the digenean Dadaytrema oxycephala (∼65 % prevalence; mean abundance: ∼3 parasites/fish), the nematod

Triple soil transmitted helminths in a case of aluminium phosphide poisoning.

Soil transmitted helminth (STH) infections remain prevalent in India despite the ongoing deworming program. Here, we report a case of triple infection of Ascaris lumbricoides, Ancylostoma duodenale, and Strongyloides stercoralis, in a young asymptomatic and apparently immunocompetent female presenting with aluminium phosphide poisoning. Except for severe anaemia, the only other indicators of chronic infection were occasional abdominal pain and self-limiting loose stools. She was successfully treated for her conditions. This case highlights that despite regular deworming programs in children, S

Camel gastrointestinal helminths in selected districts of Fafan zone, eastern Ethiopia.

A cross-sectional study was conducted to estimate the incidence and prevalence of helminths in camels in the Jigjiga and Gursum districts of Fafan zone, Somali regional state of Ethiopia. Fecal samples were collected from individual animals and analyzed using a McMaster fecal flotation method. Fecal samples were mixed with water and centrifuged to remove excess debris prior to mixing with flotation solution and performing the McMaster. For each sample, the number and types of parasite eggs present were recorded. 77.3% of examined camels were found harboring gastrointestinal parasites. Trichost…

Effects of helminths on the human immune response and the microbiome.

Helminths have evolved sophisticated immune regulating mechanisms to prevent rejection by their mammalian host. Our understanding of how the human immune system responds to these parasites remains poor compared to mouse models of infection and this limits our ability to develop vaccines as well as harness their unique properties as therapeutic strategies against inflammatory disorders. Here, we review how recent studies on human challenge infections, self-infected individuals, travelers, and endemic populations have improved our understanding of human type 2 immunity and its effects on the mic…

Helminths products directly modulate T cells that mediate experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.

Infection with helminths can protect against the development of autoimmune diseases and this has been associated with induction of anti-inflammatory innate immune responses and Tregs. Here, we demonstrate that helminth-derived products can directly target T cells, especially IL-17-secreting γδ T cells that play a key pathogenic role in CNS autoimmune disease.

Modulation of the immune response by helminths: a role for serotonin?

The mammalian gut is a remarkable organ: with a nervous system that rivals the spinal cord, it is the body's largest repository of immune an … of how changes in the enteric serotonergic system affects the outcome of infection with intestinal helminths is apparent. We present this as a call-to-action by investigators in the field. We contend that neuronal EC cell-immune interactions in the gut are essential in maintaining homeostasis and, when perturbed, contribute to pathophysiology. The full aff …

Interactions of helminths with macrophages: therapeutic potential for inflammatory intestinal disease.

Macrophages represent a highly heterogeneous and plastic cell type found in most tissues of the body; the intestine is home to enormous numbers of these cells. Considerable interest surrounds the 'M2 macrophage,' as it is able to control and regulate inflammation, while promoting tissue repair. Areas covered: As potent inducers of M2 macrophages, intestinal helminths and helminth-derived products are ideal candidates for small molecule drug design to drive M2 macrophage polarization. Several gastrointestinal helminths have been found to cause M2 macrophage-inducing infections. This review cove…

Diagnostic strategies to reveal covert infections with intestinal helminths in dogs.

Intestinal helminths are common in dogs in the United States, particularly non-treated dogs in animal shelters, but surveys by fecal flotation may underestimate their prevalence. To determine the prevalence of intestinal helminths and evaluate the ability of fecal flotation and detection of nematode antigen to identify those infections, contents of the entire gastrointestinal tract of 97 adult (>1year) dogs previously identified for humane euthanasia at two animal control shelters in northeastern Oklahoma, USA, were screened. All helminths recovered were washed in saline and fixed prior to enu…

Suppression of inflammation by helminths: a role for the gut microbiota?

Multiple recent investigations have highlighted the promise of helminth-based therapies for the treatment of inflammatory disorders of the intestinal tract of humans, including inflammatory bowel disease and coeliac disease. However, the mechanisms by which helminths regulate immune responses, leading to the amelioration of symptoms of chronic inflammation are unknown. Given the pivotal roles of the intestinal microbiota in the pathogenesis of these disorders, it has been hypothesized that helminth-induced modifications of the gut commensal flora may be responsible for the therapeutic properti…

Parasitic infections in travelers and immigrants: part II helminths and ectoparasites.

Travel and migration contribute to the emergence of certain parasites which may be imported into nonendemic areas. Noncontrolled importation of food products and animals may also contribute to the diagnosis of infections caused by helminths in nonendemic countries. Some helminth infections such as strongyloidiasis may be life-threatening, especially in immunocompromised patients, and outcome depends on correct diagnosis and treatment. Other helminth infections are neglected tropical diseases associated with chronic disease and/or disability. Major challenges concern the development of improved…

Application of small RNA technology for improved control of parasitic helminths.

Over the last decade microRNAs (miRNAs) and small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) have emerged as important regulators of post-transcriptional gene expression. miRNAs are short, non-coding RNAs that regulate a variety of processes including cancer, organ development and immune function. This class of small RNAs bind with partial complementarity to their target mRNA sequences, most often in the 3'UTR, to negatively regulate gene expression. In parasitic helminths, miRNAs are being increasingly studied for their potential roles in development and host-parasite interactions. The availability of genome …

The Case for Mass Treatment of Intestinal Helminths in Endemic Areas.

Two articles published earlier this year in the International Journal of Epidemiology [1,2] have re-ignited the debate over the World Health Organization's long-held recommendation of mass-treatment of intestinal helminths in endemic areas. In this note, we discuss the content and relevance of these articles to the policy debate, and review the broader research literature on the educational and economic impacts of deworming. We conclude that existing evidence still indicates that mass deworming is a cost-effective health investment for governments in low-income countries where worm infections …

Soil-transmitted helminths of humans in Southeast Asia--towards integrated control.

Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) pose significant public health challenges in many countries of Southeast Asia (SEA). Overall, approximately one-third of the world's cases of ascariasis, trichuriasis, and hookworm disease occur in the 11 major SEA countries. Various countries are at different stages in their response to controlling these diseases. For instance, in Malaysia and Thailand, the major burden of disease is confined to rural/remote, indigenous and/or refugee populations. In countries, such as Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic and Vietnam, the burden remains high, although e…

Human infections due to nematode helminths nowadays: epidemiology and diagnostic tools.

An update on the epidemiology of intestinal and tissue roundworms, in the world as well as in Italy, is presented. This analysis indicates that the most important changes happened in developed countries, where two main phenomena have been registered. The improvements occurred in social, economic, hygienic and sanitary conditions resulted in decrease of intestinal geohelminth prevalence but, besides, the changes happened at level of other factors, like environment, climate and human behaviour, promote more and more the opportunity for infections due to animal nematode species, which in people i
