Identifying the role of compartmentalized inflammation within the central nervous system (CNS) and its association with chronic active lesions is essential for advancing our overall understanding of disease progression in multiple sclerosis (MS). In this study, we explore whether the inflammatory activity is higher in white matter (WM) tracts disrupted by paramagnetic rim lesions (PRLs) and if inflammation in PRL-disrupted WM tracts is associated with disability in people with MS. Forty-four MS patients and 11 healthy controls were included. 18 kDa-translocator protein positron emission tomogr

It has been recognized that the sympathetic nervous system is activated in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), and abnormal sympathetic hyperactivity leads to worsening of PAH via endothelial dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to examine whether sympathetic ganglion block (SGB) can treat PAH by increasing the availability of nitric oxide (NO). PAH was induced in rats by 50 mg/kg of subcutaneous monocrotaline. After 2 weeks, daily injections of ropivacaine into the left superior cervical ganglion were repeated for 14 days (monocrotaline-SGB group). Monocrotaline group received sham S

Matrine is a quinoline alkaloid extracted and separated from the dried root, fruit, and other parts of the plant Sophora flavescens using an organic solvent. Matrine exhibits a variety of biological activities and is widely used in pharmacy, agronomy, and other fields. Due to its low bioavailability, poor chemical stability, and toxicity to the central nervous system, a large number of researchers have searched for matrine derivatives with higher biological activity and safety by modifying its structure. In this review article, the research progress of matrine derivatives obtained using two me

PURPOSE: To determine the impact of noise on heart rate variability (HRV) in men, with a focus on the noise type rather than on noise intensity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty college-going male volunteers were enrolled in this study and were randomly divided into four groups according to the type of noise they were exposed to: background, traffic, speech, or mixed (traffic and speech) noise. All groups except the background group (35 dB) were exposed to 45 dB sound pressure levels. We collected data on age, smoking status, alcohol consumption, and disease status from responses to self-reported

Astaxanthin, which has been shown to have significant antioxidant activity, is rapidly spreading as a health functioning ingredient in the health food and cosmetics sectors worldwide. It is well known that astaxanthin acts on the brain; however, there is little evidence of brain translocation due to the difficulty in identifying astaxanthin in tissues. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the concentrations of astaxanthin and adonixanthin, the latter being a biosynthetic intermediate from β-carotene to astaxanthin, in the brain after oral administration in primates. AIM: Aquatic exercise might improve endothelial function due to hydrostatic pressure increasing blood flow and causing shear stress to the endothelium. However, the acute effect of aerobic exercise in water on endothelial function is unclear. The present study compares the acute effect of aerobic exercise at moderate intensity in water and on land on endothelial function.
METHODS: Nine healthy young men walked on a treadmill for 30 min while immersed in water up to the xiphoid at 30.0 ± 0.2°C and on land at an intensity equivalent to 60% heart rate reserve in a crossover trial. Brachial arter

The autonomic nervous system closely integrates a range of vital processes, including, cardiovascular function. Physical activity, or exercise, requires a range of integrated autonomic and cardiovascular adjustments in order to maintain homeostasis. Pathological conditions that result in dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system, such as autonomic failure, can therefore jeopardize the control of blood pressure resulting in hypotension and have serious implications for health. Exercise induced hypotension, defined as a ≥ 10 mmHg fall in systolic blood pressure during exercise, can be a signif

INTRODUCTION: Essential hyperhidrosis (EH) is often considered to be related to an increased activity of sympathetic nervous system (SNS). However, there is a lack of studies comparing autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity in controls and in EH patients. The aim of the present study was to simultaneously investigate in patients with severe EH, blood pressure, heart rate variability and plasma catecholamine levels in comparison with controls.
METHODS: 19 EH patients and 20 controls with normal ANS function assessed by clinical testing were included. Blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) we

Acetylcholine (ACh) acts as a neurotransmitter and neuromodulator. A small dose of eggplant powder rich in ACh (equivalent to 22 g fresh eggplant/d) has been shown to reduce blood pressure (BP) in individuals with higher BP. Here, we investigated the mechanisms underlying the antihypertensive effects of low-dose orally administered ACh in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). The effects of ACh on BP and sympathetic nervous activity (SNA), including lumbar SNA (LSNA) and renal SNA (RSNA), were evaluated by subjecting conscious SHRs to a telemetry method. Single oral administration of ACh dec

BACKGROUND: Although various determinants of exercise limitation in Fontan patients have been studied, most research has been performed in patients who underwent different surgical procedures with differing haemodynamic characteristics. The aim of the current study was to evaluate non-invasively measured cardiovascular parameters and their influence on exercise performance in paediatric Fontan patients with an extracardiac conduit and moderate-good systolic ventricular function.
METHODS: Fontan patients, between 8 and 18 years of age, with moderate to good systolic ventricular function and an

Background: Childhood obesity, including overweight, continues increasing worldwide affecting health expectancy, quality of life and healthcare expenditure. These subjects have higher probability of suffering or developing cardio metabolic risk factors. Recent studies have revealed cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) as a valuable clinical parameter to identify these subjects and have even suggested cut-off values. However, evaluating CRF in overweight and obese youth can be difficult to implement, unfriendly and expensive. Objective: Develop a screening tool to identify high-risk subjects in a rep

Huntingtin-associated protein 1 (HAP1) is a neural interactor of huntingtin in Huntington's disease and interacts with gene products in a number of other neurodegenerative diseases. In normal brains, HAP1 is expressed abundantly in the hypothalamus and limbic-associated regions. These areas tend to be spared from neurodegeneration while those with little HAP1 are frequently neurodegenerative targets, suggesting its role as a protective factor against apoptosis. In light of the relationship between neurodegenerative diseases and deterioration of higher nervous activity, it is important to defin

PURPOSE: Autonomic dysregulation is observed in heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Abnormal heart rate variability (HRV), a measure of such dysregulation, is associated with poor prognosis in HFrEF. It is unknown if novel HRV metrics normalize in the patients with recovered ejection fraction (HFrecEF) compared to persistent HFrEF. The aim of this study was to investigate novel HRV indexes in persistent HFrEF in comparison to HFrecEF METHODS: A standard 10-min electrocardiography measurement was performed in patients categorized in four groups: persistent HFrEF (n = 40),

Vitamin B12 plays a vital role in neuronal development, particularly in myelinogenesis. Demyelination of the autonomic nervous system occurs early in vitamin B12 deficiency. However, the impact of maternal vitamin B12 deficiency during pregnancy on neuronal function in the offspring is poorly documented. The objective of this study was to assess cardiac autonomic nervous activity in children born to mothers with low vitamin B12 status during pregnancy using heart rate variability (HRV) indices in the frequency domain. Seventy-nine healthy children between 3 and 8 years of age were evaluated fr

BACKGROUND: The autoantibodies stimulate the beta1-adrenoreceptors on cardiac myocytes similar to norepinephrine, and are associated with reduced cardiac function. Iodine-123 metaiodobenzylguanidine ((123)I-MIBG) is metabolized similarly to norepinephrine. This study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between cardiac stimulation by anti-beta1-adrenoreceptor autoantibodies and myocardial sympathetic nervous activity in patients with chronic heart failure.
METHODS: We screened for the anti-beta1-adrenoreceptor autoantibodies in 52 patients with chronic heart failure by conducting an

Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have high theta and low beta activity in the frontal lobe. The higher the theta/beta ratio, the lower the level of central nervous system (CNS) cortical arousal. However, there is seldom evidence between electroencephalograms (EEGs) and the patient's intentionality to regulate the cortical activity of executive attention tasks. We investigated whether children with ADHD intended to improve their performance in executive attention tasks and whether that increased their brain activity. Fifty-one children with ADHD (ADHD) and 51 typica

We recorded muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) from the peroneal nerve during sleep in three OSAS patients who showed three kinds of apnea. During central apneas and central component of mixed apnea, bursts of MSNA appeared in high probability with almost each heart beat. During obstructive apneas and the obstructive component of mixed apneas, bursts of MSNA appeared in a cluster after the end of each inspiratory effort. Burst rate of MSNA during apnea were higher in cental apneas and the central component of mixed apnea than in obstructive apneas and the obstructive component of mixed a

The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentrations of three acid monoamine metabolites, two purines, and a group of amino acids were determined in two children with chronic central alveolar hypoventilation (Ondine's curse). The levels of all assayed neuroactive substances, metabolites, and amino acids, with one exception, were normal compared to an age-matched group of neurologically healthy children. The levels of the dopamine metabolite homovanillic acid in the children with Ondine's curse were approximately 2.4 times higher than expected for age range. The present findings may indicate a link bet
