MR imaging of histiocytic sarcoma of the canine brain.

Histiocytic sarcomas are characterized by proliferation and/or infiltration of neoplastic histiocytes localized to specific organs, unlike malignant histiocytosis which involves many organ systems. Only a few cranial histiocytic sarcomas have been reported. Here we describe four dogs that presented with neurological deficits referable to the forebrain, and were diagnosed histologically as having histiocytic sarcoma. Using magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, the tumors were characterized by a T2-hyperintense and T1-isointense mass in one dog, T2- and T1-isointense extraaxial masses in two dogs, an…

Disseminated histiocytic sarcoma with excessive hemophagocytosis in a cat.

A 10-year-old Japanese domestic cat was presented with anorexia and weight loss. Severe anemia and thrombocytopenia were detected. Abdominal radiography and ultrasonography revealed the presence of multiple masses in the spleen. Cytological analyses of the masses revealed several atypical histiocytic cells and considerable hemophagocytosis. A splenectomy was performed, and the mass was diagnosed as histiocytic sarcoma on the basis of histopathological, cytochemical and immunohistochemical analyses. Further, abnormal hemophagocytosis was observed in the bone marrow. The cat was administered pre

Hemophagocytic histiocytic sarcoma in a Japanese black cow.

At necropsy, an 11-year-old Japanese Black cow with anemia, leukocytopenia, and progressive hind limb ataxia had marked diffuse splenomegaly and multiple masses in the thoracic vertebrae. Histologically, neoplastic erythrophagocytic histiocytes were in the splenic red pulp, vertebral masses, and blood vessels of the liver and lungs. The spinal cord was compressed by the vertebral masses. Clinicopathological, macroscopic, and histologic findings were consistent with hemophagocytic histiocytic sarcoma. Vertebral involvement with spinal cord compression and resultant hind limb ataxia is an unusua…

Follicular lymphomas and histiocytic/dendritic neoplasms related?

In this issue of Blood, Feldman and colleagues provide convincing evidence of a clonal relationship between follicular lymphoma and H/DC sarcoma, suggesting plasticity between these apparently disparate lineages with implications for transformation events in malignant lymphomas.

Primary histiocytic sarcoma of the spleen associated with hemophagocytosis.

We report a patient with primary histiocytic sarcoma of the spleen associated with prominent hemophagocytosis. Although thrombocytopenia, probably due to hemophagocytosis, was refractory to corticosteroid therapy, the transfusion of platelets, and splenic irradiation, partial splenic embolization was effective and facilitated splenectomy for a diagnosis. The majority of the spleen showed necrosis, but viable neoplastic cells with pleomorphic nuclei and abundant cytoplasm, showing occasional erythrocytes or leukocytes, were still discernible. The neoplastic cells expressed CD68, lysozyme, and S

Histiocytic osteolysis secondary to hyperbilirubinaemia: a case report.

A 6-year-old boy with Alagille syndrome, characterised by marked hyperbilirubinaemia, presented with malunion of a pathological fracture of the femur with local bone atrophy and insufficient callus formation. During corrective osteotomy, it was noted that the femur was stained dark green, suggestive of bilirubin deposition. Histology of the resected bone revealed the presence of many histiocytes and osteoclast-like multinucleate giant cells containing bilirubin particles in the cytoplasm causing bone resorption. These findings suggest that bilirubin may activate macrophages to form osteoclast-…

Skeletal lesions of histiocytic sarcoma in nineteen dogs.

The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical and radiographic findings in dogs with bone lesions secondary to histiocytic sarcoma. Nineteen dogs with radiographically identified bone lesions that were histologically diagnosed as histiocytic sarcoma were assessed. The medical records, all available radiographs and histologic sections were reviewed retrospectively. Dogs were subcategorized into localized or disseminated histiocytic sarcoma groups. Golden Retrievers or Rottweilers greater than 5 years of age, with a history of lameness or neurologic deficits localized to the spinal cord

Sonographic features of histiocytic neoplasms in the canine abdomen.

The purpose of this retrospective study was to describe the ultrasonographic features of malignant histiocytosis (MH), malignant fibrous histiocytoma, and histiocytic sarcoma in abdominal organs of dogs. The medical records of 18 dogs that had undergone abdominal sonography and had a histopathologic diagnosis of abdominal MH, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, and histiocytic sarcoma were reviewed. The organ most commonly affected was the spleen. MH was the most common followed by histiocytic sarcoma and malignant fibrous histiocytoma. In the spleen there were often multiple hypoechoic nodules wi

Histiocytic sarcoma with interdigitating dendritic cell differentiation.

The authors describe a rare tumor with overlapping features of true histiocytic sarcoma and interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma occurring in infancy. A 3-month-old boy presented with hepatosplenomegaly and abdominal distention. He presented a diagnostic challenge at initial presentation despite extensive investigations. On follow-up at age 16 months he had progressive splenomegaly, thrombocytopenia, and worsening coagulopathy. A diagnosis of histiocytic sarcoma with interdigitating dendritic cell differentiation was established after an open biopsy of liver and spleen. A repeat liver biopsy

Fascin and the differential diagnosis of childhood histiocytic lesions.

This is a descriptive screening of 46 examples of childhood histiocytic lesions and some of their look-alikes using a monoclonal antibody, p55, to fascin. Fascin, an actin-bundling protein, identifies dendritic cells in the blood and in tissues. Our aim was to test the diagnostic utility of the antibody in various lesions at different sites and to see whether the staining patterns give insight into the cell types involved. Fascin intensely stained the cells of juvenile xanthogranulomas (JXG), Rosai-Dorfman lesions, and soft tissue dendrocytomas. Normal Langerhans' cells and the cells of Langer

Diffuse histiocytic lymphoma treated with chemotherapy and radiation.

A case of cutaneous lymphoma treated aggressively with chemotherapy and radiation is presented. This case is particularly interesting due to the fact that the patient also had a history of a malignant melanoma removed from the right shoulder, 1.26 mm thick, invasive to level III. He had two subsequent right axillary node tumors and a mesenteric tumor removed, all revealing metastatic malignant melanoma.

Cytophagic histiocytic panniculitis in systemic lupus erythematosus.

This paper presents a case of cytophagic histiocytic panniculitis in a Japanese woman, who had systemic lupus erythematosus complicated with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and lupus nephritis from the age of 12. The patient had painful multiple purplish subcutaneous nodules on the face, trunk and extremities, high fever and liver dysfunction without coagulopathy. The histological features of the skin nodules were extensive histiocyte and/or macrophage infiltration often with leuko- and/or erythrophagocytosis in the subcutaneous fat tissue.

Histiocytic lymphadenitis associated with a large joint prosthesis.

Distinctive microscopic findings in enlarged axillary lymph nodes removed during modified radical mastectomy in a 76-year-old woman with a previous ipsilateral total shoulder joint replacement are described. The sinuses of the lymph nodes were distended by numerous large macrophages that had abundant granular eosinophilic cytoplasm. Periodic acid-Schiff staining was positive, and polarization microscopy revealed birefringent particles of polyethylene. These findings were diagnostic of the reactive lymphadenopathy that is seen uncommonly in lymph nodes draining large joint prostheses.

Cytophagic histiocytic panniculitis: a report of four cases.

Four patients presented with a clinical picture of spiking fever, erythematous nodular subcutaneous skin lesions, anaemia and leucopenia. Inconstant features were weight loss (3/4), splenomegaly (3/4), thrombocytopenia (3/4), raised liver enzymes (3/4), hepatomegaly (2/4) and serosal effusions (2/4). The histopathological findings of lobular histiocytic panniculitis with 'bean-bag' cells were characteristic of cytophagic histiocytic panniculitis (CHP). No infectious agent could be detected, and there was no histological evidence of malignant neoplasia. Unlike most previously described patients

Cytophagic histiocytic panniculitis evolving into total lipodystrophy.

A 15-year-old boy had persistent fever with severe neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, coagulation disorder, and marked elevation of lactate dehydrogenase values. A diagnosis of cytophagic histiocytic panniculitis was made after repeated skin biopsies. Three years after onset, he gradually lost 20 kg in body weight, and both skin and bone marrow specimens revealed degenerative changes of fatty tissue without any inflammatory cells. These findings suggest that total lipodystrophy syndrome results from the inflammatory destructive process of adipose tissue. To our knowledge, our report is the first t
