[The black death in Norway].

The old Icelandic annals tell that the Black Death came to Bergen, Norway, in 1349 with a ship from England. This was probably at the beginning of September. From Bergen the plague spread rapidly northwards and southwards along the coast and over land to Eastern Norway. The Black Death remained in Norway for approximately six months. The epidemic must have been started by infected black rats and rat fleas in the grain cargo of the ship. The account in the annals, and experiences from other countries, indicate that pneumonic plague was dominant in Bergen at the start of the epidemic. After that

Pediatric surgery in Islamic medicine from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.

Albucasis lived throughout the tenth century, practicing medicine for more than 40 years in Zahra at the outskirts of Cordoba. This was the period of the greatest splendour of Arab domination of Spain. Albucasis taught medicine at the university of Cordoba and published an encyclopedia of medicine comprising 30 volumes, the last one dealing with surgery. This work was translated into all civilized languages and was the standard medical textbook right till the eighteenth century. This paper deals with many pediatric surgical conditions as described in Albucasis' 30th volume. The pathology and t

[Bloodletting therapy in medieval Arabic medicine].

In the tradition of Arabic medicine, bloodletting therapy was introduced through the centuries-long translation movement and systematically inherited from Galenic medical theory. As a result, it transcended the scope of early "Prophetic Medicine", and further incorporated its own clinical observations and anatomical practices, forming a distinctive therapeutic system that exerted a profound influence on the Latin West and even on early-modern medicine. A review of its development shows that it was continuously engaged in two-way exchanges with Western medicine. This historical perspective prov

Headaches in the medieval Medical School of Salerno.

PREMISE: Headaches are a serious public health concern of our days, affecting about 50% of the world's adult population. However, such a plague is not limited to the modern era, since ancient archaeological, written, religious and cultural evidences testify to countless attempts to face such disorders from medical, neurosurgical, psychological and sociological perspectives. BACKGROUND: Substantially, the Hippocratic and Galenic theories about headache physiopathology remained predominant up to the 17th century, when the vascular theory of migraine was introduced by Thomas Willis and then evol

Some of the earliest depictions of the human spine: a glimpse into European history.

INTRODUCTION: Drawings of the human form have a history almost as old as mankind itself. However, illustrations of the human spine as seen with the vertebral column were not seen until much later. This paper reviews some of the early European depictions of the human vertebral column from the twelfth (e.g., Fünfbilderserie "Bone-Man": 1152 A.D.) and thirteenth (e.g., Ashmole 1292) centuries. Man's understanding of his body has evolved over hundreds of years. CONCLUSIONS: This glimpse into our past and early drawings of the human spine illustrate how this particular anatomical structure was per

A medieval description of metastatic breast cancer; from Avicenna's view point.

Historically, one of the earliest breast cancer case descriptions comes from an Egyptian manuscript so called "the Edwin Smith Papyrus" dating back to the Pyramid Age. However, apart from all respective documents remained from the antiquity, concepts and standpoints of Avicenna (Ibn Sina; a famous Persian physician) in regard of the cancer are interesting. A case of breast cancer and metastatic condition has been reported by Avicenna in the Canon of Medicine. This report can be considered as a very early report of metastatic or stage IV breast cancer. He underlined that cancer should be diagno

Case report: A medieval case of molar-incisor-hypomineralisation.

INTRODUCTION: Molar-incisor-hypomineralisation (MIH) has been identified in recent years as a condition affecting the first permanent molars and, in some cases, the permanent incisors. Many factors have been suggested as to its aetiology. Examples of MIH have also been reported in skeletal remains in the past. These historical examples have, however, been for unknown individuals. CASE REPORT: A skull that has become available for dental examination that is uncertainly attributed to be that of Lady Eleanor Talbot (c.1436-1468) who ended her life as a Carmelite nun in Norwich (England). The den

What did Avicenna (Ibn Sina, 980-1037A.D.) look like?

We present a reconstruction of Avicenna's face from the only photograph of his skull available today. The photograph is more than 50 years old, and was obtained during the exhumation of Avicenna's tomb in Hamadan for relocation. The reconstruction procedure was performed by the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification at the University of Dundee, UK. This is probably the first scholarly attempt to reconstruct Avicenna's face. Historians and clinicians who are interested in the history of medicine may find the current craniofacial analysis of Avicenna and the final output interesting and wor

Epidemic waves during Justinian's plague in the Byzantine Empire (6th-8th c. AD).

The aim of the present study is to collect the epidemic outbreaks and the epidemic waves of the bubonic plague of the Byzantine Empire during the first pandemic (541-751 AD). Human activities, such as trade and military movements have been speculated as underlying factors for the causation of the pandemic. Historical data combined with geographical spreading of the plague, allows an alternative speculation of suspicious enzootic areas in the Middle East. We conclude that the possible existence of enzootic areas in that region might have been responsible for the causation of the numerous outbre

[Medical history of a Florentine dynasty: the Medici].

The family of the Medici has dominated the city of Florence from the 15th to the 18th century. With the fortune accumulated by their bank, their trade and industry, they made Florence the European capital of the Renaissance and one of the world centres of culture. However, the Medici got a lot of health problems that have often influenced the destiny of the city and its citizens. During the 15th century, the Medici of Cafaggiolo branch of the family were the uncrowned masters of the Florence republic. All got major "rheumatic" complaints, who often interfered with a normal professional activit

A case of canine hypodontia in an early Croatian cemetery Strance-Gorica.

In the old Croatian cemetery Strance-Gorica in the Vinodol region, dating from the 9th to 11th century, osteological parts of the upper and the lower jaws with teeth were found, besides some other archeological finds. Data processing in dentistry regarding a possible presence of hypodontia was carried out on archeological finds (skeletal remains) on 27 persons available for the research. Only one case of canine hypodontia was found and described. In the remaining 26 persons no case of hypodontia was found on the relicts of the upper and lower jaws nor in other teeth groups. The frequency of hy

[Tooth diseases in the medieval population of Gracanica near Valjevo].

The analyses of the pattern of dental disease in the Late Medieval Serbian population from cemetery excavations in the archaeological site Grachanica were based on the study of tooth wear, ante-mortem tooth loss, caries, hypoplasia, alveolar resorption, abscesses and calculus. The total sample of all available skeletons with almost complete permanent dentition numbers 45 individuals. Dental sample comprises 178 maxillary teeth and 337 mandibular teeth. The presence of dental caries was scored taking into consideration the size of the lesion (four degrees) and its position on the tooth. The deg

Vision and cognition in the natural philosophy of Albert the Great (Albertus Magnus).

Albert the Great (Albertus Magnus, ca. 1197-1280) descended from a nobleman's family in Upper Suebia and studied natural philosophy and theology at the University of Padova, where he joined the Dominican order. Confronted with Aristotelian thought mainly in its Arabic modification (Avicenna, Al-Farabi, Averroes, Alhazen, Costa ben Luca and others) from his days in Padova, he elaborated in several books on the principles of natural philosophy, biology, brain and sense functions and psychology in addition to his theological and exegetic works. His observations and concepts on vision are discusse
