A pharmacovigilance program from laboratory signals for the detection and reporting of serious adverse drug reactions in hospitalized patients.

The detection and reporting of serious adverse drug reactions (SADRs) have become important components of monitoring and evaluation activities performed in hospitals. We present the implementation of a prospective pharmacovigilance program based on automatic laboratory signals (ALSs) at a hospital. We also report the general findings after the first year of operation of the program, which involved ALSs that indicate various SADRs: agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia, liver injury, thrombocytopenia, hyponatremia, and rhabdomyolysis. The number of hospitalizations during the year was 54,525, and 1,

"We Just Get Whispers Back": Perspectives of Primary and Hospital Health Care Providers on Between-Service Communication for Aboriginal People with Cancer in the Northern Territory.

Background/Objectives: Cancer is a leading cause of death for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, with remoteness increasing the risk for poorer outcomes. Primary health care (PHC) clinics have an important role in cancer screening, diagnosis, and post-discharge cancer care, particularly in remote communities, so accurate, timely communication between hospitals, specialists and PHC clinics is vital. This paper analyses the perspectives of Northern Territory health care professionals on communication between PHC and hospital services related to providing care for Aboriginal people wit

OBJECTIVE: to analyze trends of hospitalization for ambulatory care-sensitive cardiovascular conditions (ACSCC). METHODS: this was an ecological study of time series of rates of hospitalization for ACSCC in the municipality of Senador Canedo, GO, Brazil, 2001-2016; we used data from the Hospital Information System and population estimates provided by the Inter-Agency Health Information Network (RIPSA) and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE); the Prais-Winsten method was used to analyze trends. RESULTS: we used data on 3,244 hospitalizations for ACSCC; there was decreas

Support required for antiretroviral uptake in developing countries.

It is evident from the current global debate on improving care and treatment for people living with HIV that antiretroviral therapy will become increasingly available in resource-poor countries. As this happens, there is an imperative to determine which factors will promote optimal use of these complex therapies to minimise the potentially serious consequences of poor adherence and the development of a worse epidemic of multidrug-resistant HIV (MDRHIV). In parallel with the process of allocating funds to purchase drugs, there needs to be a pro-active scaling up of healthcare worker training an

Dynamic composition of medical support services in the ICU: Platform and algorithm design details.

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is an extremely data-intensive environment where each patient needs to be monitored 24/7. Bedside monitors continuously register vital patient values (such as serum creatinine, systolic blood pressure) which are recorded frequently in the hospital database (e.g. every 2 min in the ICU of the Ghent University Hospital), laboratories generate hundreds of results of blood and urine samples, and nurses measure blood pressure and temperature up to 4 times an hour. The processing of such large amount of data requires an automated system to support the physicians' daily

AMIDE: a free software tool for multimodality medical image analysis.

Amide's a Medical Image Data Examiner (AMIDE) has been developed as a user-friendly, open-source software tool for displaying and analyzing multimodality volumetric medical images. Central to the package's abilities to simultaneously display multiple data sets (e.g., PET, CT, MRI) and regions of interest is the on-demand data reslicing implemented within the program. Data sets can be freely shifted, rotated, viewed, and analyzed with the program automatically handling interpolation as needed from the original data. Validation has been performed by comparing the output of AMIDE with that of sev

Clinical Information Systems Integration in New York City's First Mobile Stroke Unit.

BACKGROUND: Mobile stroke units (MSUs) reduce time to thrombolytic therapy in acute ischemic stroke. These units are widely used, but the clinical information systems underlying MSU operations are understudied. OBJECTIVE: The first MSU on the East Coast of the United States was established at New York Presbyterian Hospital (NYP) in October 2016. We describe our program's 7-month pilot, focusing on the integration of our hospital's clinical information systems into our MSU to support patient care and research efforts. METHODS: NYP's MSU was staffed by two paramedics, one radiology technologis

Separation of Maternal and Newborn Care in US Hospitals: A Systemic Threat to Survival, Health and Well-Being.

Through greater understanding of past social, cultural, economic, political, scientific and technological forces which shaped our current health systems to separate mothers and newborn infants, we can begin to devise effective approaches to reshape these systems to meet the needs of mothers and newborn infants today. Medical science and technology have evolved vastly in the last century; however, effects of historical factors persist in our current health care systems, reflected in separate maternal and neonatal care in different departments with distinct guidelines, providers, and treatment l

User-Centered Evaluation of Healthcare Information System Utilization: A Cross-Sectional Study Integrating Acceptance Models.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Despite the promising role of health information systems (HISs) in healthcare settings, they have not consistently met users' expectations. The current research aimed to investigate the extent to which the functions of a healthcare information system align with users' actual needs, while also identifying the factors that influence the system's utilization. METHODS: The study was conducted in 2021 at a tertiary university hospital in Urmia, Iran. It utilized a quantitative method with a descriptive, cross-sectional design. Data were collected using a researcher-made questi

Symptomatic Tetralogy of Fallot in Young Infants: Primary Repair or Shunt-Pediatric Health Information System Database Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Compare the early outcomes and hospital charges of early primary repair and systemic-to-pulmonary artery shunt for neonates and young infants (≤90 days of age) with tetralogy of Fallot using data from the Pediatric Health Information System database. METHODS: The Pediatric Health Information System database was queried for patients <90 days of age with primary diagnosis of tetralogy of Fallot who underwent nonelective surgical repair or palliation between January 2008 and December 2014. Modeling travel impedance to medical care for children with birth defects using Geographic Information Systems.

BACKGROUND: Children with birth defects may face significant geographic barriers accessing medical care and specialized services. Using a Geographic Information Systems-based approach, one-way travel time and distance to access medical care for children born with spina bifida was estimated. METHODS: Using 2007 road information from the Florida Department of Transportation, we built a topological network of Florida roads. Live-born Florida infants with spina bifida during 1998 to 2007 were identified by the Florida Birth Defects Registry and linked to hospital discharge records. Maternal resid

[Explore method about post-marketing safety re-evaluation of Chinese patent medicines based on HIS database in real world].

There are many kinds of Chinese traditional patent medicine used in clinical practice and many adverse events have been reported by clinical professionals. Chinese patent medicine's safety problems are the most concerned by patients and physicians. At present, many researchers have studied re-evaluation methods about post marketing Chinese medicine safety inside and outside China. However, it is rare that using data from hospital information system (HIS) to re-evaluating post marketing Chinese traditional patent medicine safety problems. Using information technology to reduce the inappropriate use of surgical prophylactic antibiotic.

Despite implementation of practical guidelines, continuing education programs in our hospital, the percentage of inappropriate prophylactic antibiotic usage remains high. The aim of this study was to investigate whether information technology can reduce the misuse of surgical prophylactic antibiotic. We started physician continuing education programs in January 2005 and initiated feedback system in July 2005. The computerized reminder system was implemented in April 2006. Relevant data about the surgical prophylactic antibiotic usage were collected and was separated into three groups. Group 1
