The effects of social deprivation on adolescent development and mental health.

Adolescence (the stage between 10 and 24 years) is a period of life characterised by heightened sensitivity to social stimuli and the increased need for peer interaction. The physical distancing measures mandated globally to contain the spread of COVID-19 are radically reducing adolescents' opportunities to engage in face-to-face social contact outside their household. In this interdisciplinary Viewpoint, we describe literature from a variety of domains that highlight how social deprivation in adolescence might have far-reaching consequences. Human studies have shown the importance of peer acc

Combined oral contraceptive use and risk for binge eating in women: Potential gene × hormone interactions.

Extant animal and human data suggest endogenous ovarian hormones increase risk for binge eating in females, possibly via gene × hormone interactions and hormonally induced increases in genetic influences. Approximately 85 % of women will take combined oral contraceptives (COCs) that mimic the riskiest hormonal milieu for binge eating (i.e., post-ovulation when both estrogen and progesterone are present). The purpose of this narrative review is to synthesize findings of binge eating risk in COC users. Few studies have been conducted, but results suggest that COCs may increase risk for binge eat

Host species restriction of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus through its receptor, dipeptidyl peptidase 4.

UNLABELLED: Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) emerged in 2012. Recently, the MERS-CoV receptor dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4) was identified and the specific interaction of the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of MERS-CoV spike protein and DPP4 was determined by crystallography. Animal studies identified rhesus macaques but not hamsters, ferrets, or mice to be susceptible for MERS-CoV. Here, we investigated the role of DPP4 in this observed species tropism. Cell lines of human and nonhuman primate origin were permissive of MERS-CoV, whereas hamster, ferret, or mouse cell line

Interaction of the VP8* protein of a bovine rotavirus C with the H type-2 antigen and its precursor N-acetyl-lactosamine.

Rotaviruses (RVs) are the main cause of viral diarrhea among infants, small children, and the young of many animal species. Histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs) are potential RV receptors and glycan composition on mucous surfaces influences host susceptibility and cross-species virus transmission. RVs exhibit genotype-dependent glycan binding and differences are due to sequence modifications in the VP8* domain of the spike protein VP4. Nevertheless, the molecular bases for this genotype-dependent glycan specificity, especially in non-A RVs, are not thoroughly understood. This study delves into h

Magnesium absorption: mechanisms and the influence of vitamin D, calcium and phosphate.

Magnesium absorption has been studied in both humans and animals under diverse experimental conditions. As a result, the data often appear confusing and conflicting. In this review we attempt to summarize information concerning Mg absorption and, where possible, to reconcile apparently conflicting observations. Most studies suggest that Mg is absorbed predominantly in the distal intestine. At usual Mg intakes, Mg absorption occurs primarily by intercellular diffusional and solvent drag mechanisms. There is evidence for a saturable component of Mg absorption in the small intestine and the desce

An outbreak of bovine tuberculosis in two herds in south west Scotland--veterinary and human public health response.

BACKGROUND: Although the incidence of bovine tuberculosis in UK cattle has declined markedly, outbreaks still occur. There is often confusion as to how veterinary and human public health agencies should interact in such circumstances. We report an outbreak of bovine tuberculosis which occurred in South West Scotland in 1992. METHODS: The outbreak, which affected two cattle herds, and potentially involved 17 humans, was discovered when visible tuberculous lesions were found at routine post mortem examination of a calf. Investigation of animals and humans, exchange of information between human

[Transplantation of the intestines and bacterial translocation].

Infections, sepsis and multiple organ failure syndrome are associated with high morbidity and mortality in human and experimental small bowel transplantation (SBTx). These complications are attributed to bacterial translocation demonstrated in animal and human studies. Bacterial translocation (BT) is defined as the passage of viable bacteria from the intestinal lumen to other tissues or organs. BT has been associated with different clinical and experimental situations, hemorrhagic shock, trauma, bowel obstruction, immunodepression, total parenteral nutrition, antibiotics. Although BT has been

From Farm to Community: Dispersal of Potentially Pathogenic Staphylococcus and Mammaliicoccus Species and Antimicrobial Resistance Across Shared Environments.

Staphylococcaceae are a diverse bacterial family with important implications for human and animal health. This study highlights the One Health relevance of their environmental dispersal, particularly, by identifying closely related or genetically identical strains circulating between farm and community environments. Environmental Staphylococcaceae strains were isolated from animal farms and interconnected areas within a university setting, both influenced by anthropogenic activities. Genetic diversity analysis via GTG5-PCR revealed that specific strains circulated across these environments, li

New candidate genes potentially involved in Zika virus teratogenesis.

Despite efforts to elucidate Zika virus (ZIKV) teratogenesis, still several issues remain unresolved, particularly on the molecular mechanisms behind the pathogenesis of Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS). To answer this question, we used bioinformatics tools, animal experiments and human gene expression analysis to investigate genes related to brain development potentially involved in CZS. Searches in databases for genes related to brain development and CZS were performed, and a protein interaction network was created. The expression of these genes was analyzed in a CZS animal model and secondary

A qualitative content analysis of an online forum for people with kidney disease: Exploring the role of companion and non-companion animals.

BACKGROUND: Companion and other animals have been known to promote wellbeing of people living with chronic disease by assisting in emotional regulation, social interaction and enhancing self-identity. However, little is known about the impact of animals on people with kidney disease, who often live with treatment burden, as well as compromised immune systems making them vulnerable to zoonotic diseases. OBJECTIVES: To explore the impact companion and non-companion animals have on the lives of people living with kidney disease. DESIGN: Qualitative Content Analysis of 518 posts from an online f

Sensory irritation as a basis for setting occupational exposure limits.

There is a need of guidance on how local irritancy data should be incorporated into risk assessment procedures, particularly with respect to the derivation of occupational exposure limits (OELs). Therefore, a board of experts from German committees in charge of the derivation of OELs discussed the major challenges of this particular end point for regulatory toxicology. As a result, this overview deals with the question of integrating results of local toxicity at the eyes and the upper respiratory tract (URT). Part 1 describes the morphology and physiology of the relevant target sites, i.e., th

Creating artificial lymphoid tissues to study immunity and hematological malignancies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The specialized microenvironments of lymphoid tissue affect immune cell function and progression of disease. However, current animal models are low throughput and a large number of human diseases are difficult to model in animals. Animal models are less amenable to manipulation of tissue niche components, signalling pathways, epigenetics, and genome editing than ex vivo models. On the other hand, conventional 2D cultures lack the physiological relevance to study precise microenvironmental interactions. Thus, artificial tissues are being developed to study these interactions

The study of immunological markers in tuberculosis across animal models and its translation to human research.

Tuberculosis (TB), a disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, remains one of the major causes of death from infection worldwide, with over a million associated deaths each year. The study of biomarkers for TB is critical for advancing our understanding and management of the disease. Biomarkers, defined as measurable indicators of biological states or conditions, are invaluable for the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment monitoring of TB. Clinical studies have provided critical knowledge on the matter but are also notoriously constrained by economical, ethical and sampling limitations. The

Interactions between reproductive biology and microbiomes in wild animal species.

Many parts of the animal body harbor microbial communities, known as animal-associated microbiomes, that affect the regulation of physiological functions. Studies in human and animal models have demonstrated that the reproductive biology and such microbiomes also interact. However, this concept is poorly studied in wild animal species and little is known about the implications to fertility, parental/offspring health, and survival in natural habitats. The objective of this review is to (1) specify the interactions between animals' reproductive biology, including reproductive signaling, pregnanc

Cumulative effects of prenatal-exposure to exogenous chemicals and psychosocial stress on fetal growth: Systematic-review of the human and animal evidence.

BACKGROUND: Adverse effects of prenatal stress or environmental chemical exposures on fetal growth are well described, yet their combined effect remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: To conduct a systematic review on the combined impact and interaction of prenatal exposure to stress and chemicals on developmental outcomes. METHODS: We used the first three steps of the Navigation Guide systematic review. We wrote a protocol, performed a robust literature search to identify relevant animal and human studies and extracted data on developmental outcomes. For the most common outcome (fetal growth), we eva

Human emotional odours influence horses' behaviour and physiology.

Olfaction is the most widespread sensory modality animals use to communicate, yet much remains to be discovered about its role. While most studies focused on intraspecific interactions and reproduction, new evidence suggests chemosignals may influence interspecific interactions and emotional communication. This study explores this possibility, investigating the potential role of olfactory signals in human-horse interactions. Cotton pads carrying human odours from fear and joy contexts, or unused pads (control odour) were applied to 43 horses' nostrils during fear tests (suddenness and novelty

The effects of animal-assisted therapy on anxiety ratings of hospitalized psychiatric patients.

OBJECTIVE: Animal-assisted therapy involves interaction between patients and a trained animal, along with its human owner or handler, with the aim of facilitating patients' progress toward therapeutic goals. This study examined whether a session of animal-assisted therapy reduced the anxiety levels of hospitalized psychiatric patients and whether any differences in reductions in anxiety were associated with patients' diagnoses. METHODS: Study subjects were 230 patients referred for therapeutic recreation sessions. A pre- and posttreatment crossover study design was used to compare the effects

A molecular inventory of the faecal microbiomes of 23 marsupial species.

Despite the recent expansion of culture-independent analyses of animal faecal microbiomes, many lineages remain understudied. Marsupials represent one such group, where, despite their iconic status, direct sequencing-based analyses remain limited. Here, we present a metagenomic and metabolomic exploration of the faecal microbiomes of 23 Diprotodontia marsupials, producing a reference set of 3,868 prokaryotic and 12,142 viral metagenome-assembled genomes, the majority (>80 %) of which represent novel species. As with other animals, host phylogeny is the primary driver of microbiome composition,

Role of early life exposure and environment on neurodegeneration: implications on brain disorders.

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and retinal degeneration have been studied extensively and varying molecular mechanisms have been proposed for onset of such diseases. Although genetic analysis of these diseases has also been described, yet the mechanisms governing the extent of vulnerability to such diseases remains unresolved. Recent studies have, therefore, focused on the role of environmental exposure in progression of such diseases especially in the context of prenatal and postnatal life, explaining
