Chlamydia trachomatis infection and the risk of perinatal mortality in Hungary.

INTRODUCTION: Chlamydial infections of the genital tract are thought to often lead to preterm birth, which is the most important perinatal problem in Hungary. AIM OF STUDY: A multicenter study was carried out to determine the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection, risk factors for the infection and to relate the infection to perinatal mortality, accounting for potential confounding effects. METHODS: The nucleic acid hybridization method (PACE2 Gen-Probe) was applied for the examination of Chlamydia trachomatis. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess risk. RESULTS: A total o…

[Endemic iodine deficiency in Hungary and possibilities of iodine substitution].

Following a short historical review the authors summarize the latest results regarding domestic iodine supply. Iodine content in drinking waters, samples of mother's milk, urine and goiter screening data from all regions of Hungary unanimously verify that significant part of the population is deficient in iodine, yet supplementation of iodine is still even today an unsolved problem in our country. In the search for the reasons the authors review the theoretical possibilities of iodine supplementation by discussing advantages and disadvantages of the individual models. They establish that alime…

[Surgery for pseudarthrosis of the scaphoid bone performed in Hungary 1988].

Authors analyse, based on an all-round inquiry, the operations performed for pseudarthrosis of the scaphoid in 1988. It was found that 344 of 472 operations were reconstructive, 128 palliative. The single types of operation are briefly described. They hint at the fact that the operative treatment of scaphoid pseudarthrosis in Hungary is carried out mostly in Centers.

Early-stage resectable non-small cell lung cancer in Hungary.

This study provides a comprehensive analysis of early-stage resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in Hungary, investigating incidence rates, demographic trends, treatment patterns and survival outcomes. We used data from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) spanning 2013-2022, and we analyzed 6,571 patients with available NSCLC histology and no metastasis, who underwent curative surgery within 6 months of diagnosis, and evaluated epidemiological trends and the use of neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapies. For the efficacy analysis, we narrowed the patient cohort to 5,494 patients dia…

Somatization Patterns and Minority Stress Among LGBTQ+ Individuals in Hungary.

This research aims to explore the relationship between somatization and minority stress in the LGBTQ+ community in Hungary, building on the biopsychosocial model, addressing the unique health challenges of the community and expanding the currently limited literature on the subject. The study involved adult, LGBTQ+, Hungarian individuals, and it assessed somatic symptom severity using the Patient Health Questionnaire-15. Ordinal logistic regressions were carried out, using multiple covariates and factors. Our findings shows that women reported higher somatic symptoms and stress levels, however,…

Emerging human pulmonary dirofilariasis in Hungary: a single center experience.

BACKGROUND: Human pulmonary dirofilariasis (HPD) is rare in Hungary, and it stems from Dirofilaria immitis, mainly transmitted through mosquito bites, with dogs as primary hosts. Despite its prevalence in veterinary settings, human cases are infrequent. Historically, Mediterranean countries report most HPD cases, but sporadic cases occur in temperate European regions. Radiologically, HPD often manifests in a non-specific manner, resembling pulmonary neoplasms, leading to unnecessary surgery and patient distress. METHODS: This study presents a notable case series from Hungary, encompassing a 1…

Neonatal Screening for Cystic Fibrosis in Hungary-First-Year Experiences.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the strategy of the cystic fibrosis newborn screening (CFNBS) programme in Hungary based on the results of the first year of screening. A combined immunoreactive trypsinogen (IRT) and pancreatitis-associated protein (PAP) CFNBS protocol (IRT/IRT×PAP/IRT) was applied with an IRT-dependent safety net (SN). Out of 88,400 newborns, 256 were tested screen-positive. Fourteen cystic fibrosis (CF) and two cystic fibrosis-positive inconclusive diagnosis (CFSPID) cases were confirmed from the screen-positive cases, and two false-negative cases were diagnosed later. B…

Human cases of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) infections in Hungary.

Lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) is a "neglected" rodent-borne viral zoonotic disease caused by lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) (family Arenaviridae). The aim of this retrospective clinical and laboratory study was to detect LCMV RNA, using RT-PCR, in cerebrospinal fluid samples collected from patients with central nervous system (CNS) infections of unknown aetiology from over a 12-year period in Hungary. Between 2009 and 2020, a total of 74 cerebrospinal fluid samples were tested using an in-house LCMV-specific RT-PCR-based method at the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immu…
