INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this cross-sectional retrospective study was to evaluate the patterns of pharyngeal airway volume change determined by cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) stage and compare it with that which was characterized by chronological age. Correlations between hyoid bone positions and airway volumes were also examined.
METHODS: CVM staging was determined from cone-beam computed tomography scans of 420 white patients aged 9-15 years. Patients were stratified on the basis of sex and skeletal pattern to establish pharyngeal airway volume clusters for each CVM stage. The hori

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Skeletal Class III malocclusion often requires mandibular setback, which can affect airway patency and skeletal stability, particularly when managed with a surgery-first orthognathic approach (SFOA). This study evaluated the influence of initial incisal overlap on mandibular plane (MP) rotation, pharyngeal airway volume, and hyoid bone position following surgery-first isolated mandibular setback in skeletal Class III patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen patients (mean age, 24.5 ± 4.22 years) treated with a SFOA were grouped by initial overbite (OB): Group 1 (OB ≥ 0 mm

BACKGROUND: The upper airway volume is among the factors that affect orthodontic treatment plans. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), as an accurate diagnostic modality, can help assess anatomical structures associated with the upper airway volume.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to use CBCT to determine if there are differences in the upper airway volume between different sagittal and vertical skeletal patterns, considering the hyoid bone position, palatal depth, nasal septum deviation (NSD), and concha bullosa.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: From among 105 initial CBCT samples retrieved from the arc

BACKGROUND: A previous study showed that airway ultrasound, specifically the distance from the skin to the hyoid bone (DSHB), may be correlated with a higher risk of difficult mask ventilation (DMV). However, the study was conducted in Italy and lacks data for the Asian and Thai populations. This study aimed to predict DMV using pre-operative ultrasonography to measure the DSHB and from the skin to the thyroid isthmus (DSTI) in Thai patients undergoing elective surgery under general anesthesia.
METHODS: In total, 189 patients who underwent general anesthesia during elective surgery were enrol

BACKGROUND: Studying the hyoid bone in dogs is of significant importance in veterinary surgery and anatomy, as it aids in understanding how variations in this structure may affect tongue mobility, swallowing and vocalisation across breeds.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to provide preliminary insights into the relationship between structural differences in the hyoid bone and breed-specific functional adaptations in tongue shape and movement by analysing shape variations within the hyoid apparatus.
METHODS: Hyoid bones from computed tomography images of 26 dogs were modelled, and principal compo

Fractures of the hyoid bones have been reported occasionally in dogs, but the prevalence and significance of hyoid injury in dogs and cats are unknown. In human beings, hyoid injury is rare and usually is caused by direct trauma to the greater cornu, which are analogous to the paired canine and feline thyrohyoid bones. The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence and morphology of hyoid bone injury detected in dogs and cats undergoing computed tomography (CT) for unrelated disease. CT studies of 293 dogs and 100 cats from 2012 to 2016 were identified and reviewed retrospectively. Hyoid

The hyoid bone excursion is one of the most important gauges of larynx elevation in swallowing, contributing to airway protection and bolus passage into the esophagus. However, the implications of various parameters of hyoid bone excursion, such as the horizontal or vertical displacement and velocity, remain elusive and raise the need for a tool providing automatic kinematics analysis. Several conventional and deep learning-based models have been applied automatically to track the hyoid bone, but previous methods either require partial manual localization or do not transform the trajectory by

The hyoid bone maintains crucial anatomical and functional relationships with the mandible, pharynx, and cervical spine. Its position is dynamically influenced by surrounding musculature and fascial attachments. The spatial orientation of the hyoid bone plays a major role in muscular and joint imbalances in patients with temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJD). Neuromuscular orthotic therapy in patients with TMJDs can lead to measurable changes in hyoid bone positioning and cervical spine alignment. Using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and Rocabado's hyoid triangle analysis, this case r

Objective: To evaluate the contribution of suprahyoid muscles to mouth opening in different hyoid bone positions. Methods: The jaw-opening and closing movements were imposed on the 3D inverse dynamic jaw model with and without the lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM). The activation of the muscles was evaluated for eight different positions of the hyoid bone. Results: The muscles with 100% activation provided maximum mouth opening (MMO). When the hyoid bone was replaced, the muscles could achieve MMO at the 135º, 180º, and 225º points with the LPM. Mouth opening was estimated to be 36.8 mm in the abse

BACKGROUND: Speech and swallowing dysfunction are common problems in head-and-neck cancer (HNC) survivors. Ultrasound (US) is a good method to assess suprahyoid muscles and hyoid bone movement, and it can provide valuable information on swallowing. The aims of this study were to measure the biometry of the supraglottic muscles and hyoid bone movement during swallowing and elucidate the application of real-time US for assessing swallowing dysfunction.
METHODS: We collected data from HNC and thyroid cancer patients with dysphagia symptoms and healthy controls without a history of cancer or dysp

Hyoid is a U-shaped bone present in the ventral aspect of neck at the level of fourth cervical vertebra. It is a small bone placed between the root of tongue and the thyroid cartilage. Fracture of hyoid has great significance and importance in forensic pathology. It is well documented that fracture of hyoid is a recognized finding and indicator of strangulation (more common in manual or throttling than by ligature). Fracture of hyoid is less frequently reported in hanging. Discriminant function analysis was used with all predictors (width of hyoid, antero-posterior length of hyoid and length o

Osteoradionecrosis of the hyoid bone is a rare complication of therapeutic irradiation performed for head and neck cancer. In this article, we present a 52-year-old male patient who admitted with severe odynophagia following chemo-radiotherapy administration for tonsil carcinoma. Fluorine-18-fluorodeoxy-glucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography revealed a metabolic activity in hyoid bone. The pathological findings were consistent with fungal infection and hyoid bone necrosis. Hyoid osteoradionecrosis should be kept in mind in patients with intractable dysphagia following irradia

PURPOSE: As common clinical screening tests cannot effectively predict a difficult airway, and unanticipated difficult laryngoscopy remains a challenge for physicians. We herein used ultrasound to develop some point-of-care predictors for difficult laryngoscopy.
METHODS: This prospective observational study included 502 patients who underwent laryngoscopy and a detailed sonographic assessment. Patients under 18 years old, or with maxillofacial deformities or fractures, limited mouth opening, limited neck movement or history of neck surgery were excluded from the study. PURPOSE: Hyoid bone and laryngeal approximation aid airway protection (laryngeal vestibule closure) while moving toward their peak superior and anterior positions during swallowing. Submental surface electrical stimulation (SES) is a therapeutic technique that targets the muscles that move the hyoid bone during swallowing. It is unknown whether submental SES only increases peak hyoid bone swallowing positions but not peak laryngeal swallowing positions, which could require faster or greater laryngeal movement to achieve adequate laryngeal vestibule closure.
METHOD: We examined the effects of

The Biomechanics of pharyngeal swallowing was investigated by videofluorography in 10 healthy subjects (9 men and 1 woman) during swallowing of 3 ml of fluid contrast medium and a small spoonful of jelly contrast medium. The items measured were the sequential movement of the hyoid bone: hyoid bone angle; epiglottis angle: antero-posterior diameters of the thyroid cartilage, larynx, hypopharynx, and pharyngoesophageal junction: and transport time of the swallowed bolus. It was concluded that the movement of the hyoid bone and thyroid cartilage and the angle of the epiglottis were important for

Median cervical cysts are congenital anomalies arising from remaining thyroglossal duct epithelium. A major problem in the surgical treatment of these cysts is the high frequency of recurrence. Embryonic considerations indicate an important causal role for the hyoid bone in these recurrences. We studied the relationship between operative techniques and the number of recurrences in 36 patients treated in our hospital. Fourteen patients sent from other hospitals had a recurrent fistula; in thirteen cases the hyoid bone was still in place. All patients who had the central part of the hyoid bone e
