We report two cases of an axial osteosclerosis with histopathologic findings of osteomesopyknosis in siblings. Osteomesopyknosis is a benign hereditary osteosclerosis that can show a radiologic pattern similar to blastic metastatic disease. The aim of this article is to inform radiologists about the existence of this benign condition and its various radiologic manifestations. Therefore, we discuss the principal differential diagnosis and point out the key imaging findings of osteomesopyknosis in order to avoid overdiagnosis in future cases.

The site of Marillac (Charente, France) has yielded an important stratigraphic sequence containing numerous Neandertal remains (some of them with peri-mortem manipulations) from lithofacies 2 (Quina Mousterian). This level has been correlated with MIS 4 and is associated with a TL date of 57,600 ± 4600 years BP (before present). The study of one of the cranial fragments (Marillac 3) revealed a grade 2 or Type B Hyperostosis frontalis interna (HFI), remodelling and altering the internal table of the thick frontal bone. This pathology has been analysed macroscopically together with radiography a

We experienced a case who received a bone resection for ankylosing spinal hyperostosis through the anterior approach. He subsequently became asphyxic and suffered a cardiopulmonary arrest owing to a postoperative hematoma. His complaint before the surgery was sticking of his throat and dyspnea that continued for 3 years. X-ray films revealed an osteophyte on the anterior side of the C3-C6 vertebral bodies, and we made an anterior approach under general anesthesia. There were no problems during the surgery. After being returned to the ward without intubation, he complained that he had a catch i

OBJECTIVE: To study the side effects of prolonged prostaglandin therapy especially hyperostosis and other musculoskeletal changes.
METHODS: Case files of the neonates, with cyanotic heart disease, who had received prostaglandin infusion from early days of life, were reviewed. Patients with periosteal changes were identified. Their radiographs, serum alkaline phosphatase activity, duration and dose of prostaglandin and other side effects related to the prostaglandin were studied.
RESULTS: Ten patients developed hyperostosis, who had received PGE1 infusion for a period of 9 to 195 days. Two ba

A case of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis causing dysphasia was reported. A 62 year-old man was admitted to our hospital complaining of nuchal pain and dysphagia. Roentgenograms of the cervical spine demonstrated a "flowing" ossification anterior to three contiguous vertebral bodies, C 4-6. Esophagraphic examination demonstrated esophageal compression caused by the enormous ossification. Roentgenograms of the thoracic and lumbar spine revealed an anterior bony bridge and prediscal ossicles at multiple levels of the vertebral column. These radiographic features were characteristic of D

Psoriatic arthritis is an inflammatory arthropathy associated with psoriasis, and its clinical presentation varies from case to case. Distal interphalangeal involvement is characteristic but not seen in all patients. Enthesopathy, including that of the spine, is common and contributes to the classification of psoriatic arthritis as a seronegative spondyloarthropathy. The etiopathogenesis of psoriatic arthritis is not well understood, and evolution as measured by follow-up is variable. Treatment includes nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and some of the drugs used in the treatment of rheumat

A family is described which currently comprises nine individuals, spanning three generations, who are affected with a bone disorder which is confined to the skull and is accompanied by impaired function of the cranial nerves. Radiological examination showed intracranial hyperostosis and osteosclerosis of the calvaria and the base of the skull, without involvement of the mandible or other skeletal bones. Invariably, the main presenting symptom was recurrent facial nerve paralysis from late childhood onwards, but concurrent and variable involvement of the olfactory, optic, vestibular and acousti

Two cases are presented which show a severe ossification disorder that we observed during long-term administration of a synthetic vitamin A analogue (etretinate). The radiologic findings are discussed in relation to the skeletal abnormalities, which occur in chronic vitamin A intoxication and retinoid hyperostosis, which has been recently described in the literature as a side effect of another retinoid (isotretinoin).

Ankylosing hyperostosis of the spine is a distinct clinical entity that merits diagnosis and recognition of its structural limitations. The case of multiple thoracic spine fractures presented here emphasizes the potentially increased susceptibility of involved spines to trauma and also suggests the need to caution diagnosed patients from placing their spines at undue risk.

Persistent pulling pain in the sternum, clavicles and both first ribs, especially during cold and wet weather, necessitated medical investigations and treatment in 3 patients. Externally a cylindrical or spindle-shaped swelling of the clavicles was noticeable and two patients had signs of superior caval obstruction in addition. X-rays showed hyperostosis of the sternal and middle part of the clavicle, synostosis of the sternoclavicular joints with involvement of the two first ribs as well as a thickening and increase in breadth of the sternum. In one patient there were additional swellings of

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The study aims to provide updated information on the genetic factors associated with the diagnoses 'Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis' (DISH), 'Ossification of the Posterior Longitudinal Ligament' (OPLL), and in patients with spinal ligament ossification.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies have advanced our knowledge of genetic factors associated with DISH, OPLL, and other spinal ossification (ossification of the anterior longitudinal ligament [OALL] and the yellow ligament [OYL]). Several case studies of individuals afflicted with monogenic disorders, such as X-linked

BACKGROUND Hyperostosis frontalis interna is a boney overgrowth of the inner side of the frontal bone of the skull caused by overgrowth of the endocranial surface. It is most often found in women after menopause. It is also associated with hormonal imbalance, being overweight, history of headaches, and neurocognitive degenerative conditions. Female gender, advanced age, extended estrogen stimulation, and elevated leptin levels may also play a role. The thickening is usually confined to the frontal bone, but it can spread as far as the anterior parietal and temporal bones. CASE REPORT During a

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a noninflammatory progressive disease resulting in ossification of the anterior longitudinal ligament of the spine and tendons. Herein, we describe a case of DISH in a patient on long-term hemodialysis. The patient was a 79-year-old man undergoing hemodialysis for chronic kidney disease due to diabetic nephropathy. He presented to the emergency department complaining of back pain after a slip and fall. Radiographs revealed bamboo spine-like findings, extending from the cervical to the lumbar spine. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance im

OBJECTIVE: To relate symptoms of dysphagia to Forestier-Rotes Querol disease or diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH), a disorder due to ossification in the anterior longitudinal ligament and calcifications in other entheses.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Review of clinical and radiological findings in 455 outpatients attended at our Centre with dysphagia, for 5years, referred from dental, trauma, neurological or primary health care. A diagnosis of DISH was established using Resnick's criteria.
RESULTS: We detected 51 cases with dysphagia consistent with DISH diagnostic criteria - 11.2% of

OBJECTIVE: This study reviews the management pathway and surgical outcomes of patients referred to and operated on at a tertiary neurosurgical centre, for dysphagia associated with anterolateral cervical hyperostosis (ACH) in diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH).
PATIENTS & METHODS: Electronic patient records for 6 patients who had undergone anterior cervical osteophytectomy for dysphagia secondary to ACH were reviewed. ACH diagnosis was made by an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist and patients were referred to a neurosurgical-led multidisciplinary team (MDT) for review. A seni

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is characterized by calcification and ossification of the soft tissues, mainly ligaments and entheses. The spines of patients with DISH generally become increasingly rigid and osteoporotic, and fractures may occur after even a relatively minor traumatic event such as a ground-level fall. Moreover, the prevalence of DISH may be rapidly increasing in affluent societies. Thus, awareness of this condition is becoming more important for neurosurgeons when assessing trauma patients. For the present article, a literature review was conducted to summariz

We report a 4-year-old boy with sclerosteosis associated with severe digital dysostosis. The initial medical consultation was prompted by bilateral, asymmetrical syndactyly of the index and middle fingers. The left index finger had complicated phalangeal anomalies: hyperphalangy (supernumerary phalanx distal to the middle phalanx) and hypoplasia with bracket epiphyses of the proximal and middle phalanges. Development of facial nerve palsy, hearing impairment and generalized osteosclerosis had occurred between 3 years and 4 years of age, with the subsequent identification of a homozygous SOST m
