A 60-year-old diabetic patient transferred to our retina clinic for a regular follow-up for diabetic retinopathy. He had uneventful cataract surgery at the time of pars plana vitrectomy in the right eye due to diabetic retinopathy at a private ophthalmologic hospital. METHODS: The authors reviewed the medical history and diagnostic imaging of a 12-year-old boy injured by a pellet from an airsoft gun. Typically, plastic airsoft pellets cause blunt trauma to the globe, which can lead to visual disability from corneal abrasion or hyphema. Three cases of juvenile xanthogranuloma from two ophthalmology departments were reviewed. Clinical histories, ophthalmic examination, physical examination, investigations, and treatment of these cases are described. The authors conducted a hospital-based study to ascertain basic, descriptive epidemiologic information about ocular trauma in an urban setting. Over a 6-month period, 3184 patients presenting to our emergency ward with ocular trauma were studied. Severe injuries totaled 5.1% (ruptured globe, intraocular foreign body, hyphema, orbital/facial fracture) and 94.9% were superficial injuries and contusions. Uveitis-glaucoma-hyphema syndrome is a rare late complication of anterior segment surgery. We present 2 unusual cases of this syndrome that were mistakenly diagnosed as amaurosis fugax, leading to contraindicated treatment.
