The COVID-19 pandemic has posed unprecedented challenges to health service psychology (HSP) education and training but also presents tremendous opportunities for growth that will persist well past the resolution of this public health crisis. The present article addresses three aims in understanding the challenges and opportunities faced by the HSP education and training community. First, it describes challenges to HSP education and training created by the COVID-19 pandemic, including the need to maintain the integrity of training; facilitate trainee progress; continue clinical service delivery

We tested prospectively 30 hypotensive shock patients using a continuous, on-line, real-time hemodynamic and oxygen transport monitoring system with a previously described predictive index, modified for the clinical conditions in our ICU. Continuous monitoring and display of cardiac output and 20 or more derived variables, together with the predictive index, were a feasible and useful approach. Unlike previously documented series of elective postoperative general surgical patients, our series consisted of patients with multiple trauma, myocardial infarction, sepsis, and other medical emergenci

The case of a kidney allograft recipient, who suffered from several episodes of Salmonella dublin sepsis following massive immunosuppressive therapy to overcome a transplant rejection crisis, is presented. The focus of sepsis was the chronic inflamed gallbladder. The Salmonella dublin strain isolated from the blood during the last episode was found to exhibit multiple resistance to antimicrobiol drugs. Because the resistance phenotype was characteristic for the gramnegative flora of the university hospital, it was suggested that transfer of a resistance plasmid, frequently found in gramnegativ

66 juvenile drug-consumers--development-crises (32%), neurotic developments (30%), abnormal juvenile personalities (38%) - with a predominantly polytoxicomanic drug-anamnesis of several years are examined as to their suicidal development. The quantitative and qualitative progression of drug-abuse, the duration of drug-anamnesis, frequent broken-home-situations, grave educational deficiencies together with lacking possibilities of identification, a distinct social decline and chronic conflict-situations indicate the serious degree of the suicidal development. Different suicidal syndromes are wo

Bone marrow transplants were carried out in 18 patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) in the chronic phase (CP). 12 (67%) are still alive, 11 without evidence of leukemia after a mean observation period of 24 (3-44) months, 1 relapsed and 6 died. The most frequent cause of death was GvHD and interstitial pneumonia (5). 1 patient died of septicemia. 2 grafts were performed in patients with CML in the accelerated phase (AP); both died, one from leukemic relapse and one from GvHD. The authors also participated in an international study in which 117 patients were evaluated. In CP there w

The predominant circulating cells in chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) morphologically resemble normal myeloid precursors; however, certain characteristics indicate the two are not identical. Approximately 88% of the patients with clinically typical CML present with a cytogenetic abnormality known as the Philadelphia chromosome (Ph1). Additionally, the leukocyte alkaline phosphatase (LAP) value is decreased in CML. To investigate if there are selected genes expressed in the CML cell population, poly(A+)RNA from a chronic-phase, Ph1-positive CML patient was used for construction of a complemen

The baby-boom generation is aging and workplace demographics are changing. Employees in this age group are now middle-aged. Occupational health nurses are in a unique position to guide these individuals through decisions that can affect the years ahead. Individuals in midlife may experience both physical and psychological changes, including changing physical appearance, decreased stamina, loss of family or friends, and altered vision. In the workplace, annual assessments can include evaluations to address normal changes, personal expectations, and needed support, counseling, or referrals. Midd

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) involves progressive corticostriatal dysfunction, yet the temporal dynamics and cell type-specific vulnerability patterns remain incompletely understood. While recent single-cell studies in rapidly progressing models have revealed early developmental and regional changes, temporal profiling distinguishing pathogenic mechanisms from normal aging in full-length HTT models remains lacking. Resolving stage-specific temporal dynamics across interconnected striatal and cortical neuronal populations over protracted time is essential for identifying drivers of cel

BACKGROUND: Clinicians face numerous challenges when providing effective anesthesia in the setting of humanitarian crisis or armed conflict. Anesthetic supply limitations often stand as a critical gap in these environments. Due to its clinical safety profile and relatively simple production, diethyl ether (Et2O) may offer a solution in such situations.
METHODS: The dehydration of ethanol (EtOH) using an acid-catalyzed reaction was conducted twice. Sulfuric acid was added to a solution of ethanol in a glass flask that was heated to approximately 145 °C, promoting the formation of Et2O and wate

A 58-year-old female was diagnosed with Philadelphia chromosome positive chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in blast crisis (BC) in 2004. The patient received imatinib, which quickly induced molecular remission, and subsequently underwent bone marrow transplantation (BMT) from an unrelated human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-identical donor. The post-transplant clinical course was essentially uneventful. In 2014, ten years after the BMT, the patient was admitted to our hospital complaining of lymphadenopathy, and blasts were observed in peripheral blood. The patient was diagnosed as having a CML relapse

Many patients with thalassemia have been cured with BMT since the first successful transplant in 1981. Allogeneic stem cell gene therapy is the only treatment option for patients with sickle cell anemia (SCA). A total of 11 patients with a median age of 12 years (range, 2-16), affected by SCA, received hematopoietic SCT from HLA-identical, related donors following a myeloablative-conditioning regimen. Indications for transplantation were vaso-occlusive crisis, acute chest syndrome, avascular bone necrosis, chronic RBC transfusions, or hemorrhagic stroke. All patients had sustained engraftment.

We report the clinical histories and a multiparameter pathological study of the extramedullary lesions of seven patients with chronic myelogenous leukaemia in whom the initial clinical presentation of blast crisis (BC) was in an extramedullary site (lymph nodes in six, mandibular mass in one). Bone marrow BC was demonstrated simultaneously or within a few months in four patients. Three patients received chemotherapy only, four underwent bone marrow transplant. Six patients died within 1 year from diagnosis of extramedullary BC, one is alive without disease. The longest survivals (12+, 12, 11 m

Human trafficking is a pervasive public health crisis that encompasses sex, labor, and organ trafficking. Although it affects individuals of all ages and identities, pediatric patients are particularly vulnerable. Up to 88% of trafficking victim-survivors access healthcare services during their exploitation, yet most healthcare professionals lack the training to identify and support these patients. Pediatric surgeons encounter trafficked patients presenting with trauma, abuse-related injuries, and complex medical conditions emphasizing the urgent need for anti-trafficking education and policy

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is relatively mild among Kuwaiti Arabs. However, an atypical subset of patients exists with frequent, severe vaso-occlusive crisis and osteonecrosis. The thermolabile variant of MTHFR, resulting from a C-->T mutation at nucleotide 677, has been shown to be associated with hyperhomocysteinemia, which is an important risk factor for premature vascular disease. We have screened an unselected group of 41 Kuwaiti SCD patients (33 SS and 8 Sbeta(0)-thal) attending the Hematology Clinic of Kuwait University Teaching Hospital for the MTHFR mutation, using a PCR-RFLP method. The present study aimed to differentiate groups based upon the ways undergraduate students at a large public university in the southeastern United States experienced depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and social isolation before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and how their experiences changed as the pandemic progressed. Specifically, current analyses examined within-person trends in mental health baseline and change values, identities of most likely class members, and associations among coping strategies used and latent profiles. First-year students were surveyed both before (October 2

The eating disorder voice (EDV) has been increasingly recognised as implicated in the development and maintenance of eating disorders (EDs). However, research has predominantly examined anorexia nervosa (AN), limiting understanding across other diagnoses. This study aimed to investigate the lived experiences of the EDV across EDs, including AN, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder, among individuals identifying as being in recovery for at least 12 months. Twenty participants completed semi-structured interviews or an equivalent written survey. Using Reflexive Thematic Analysis within an

Individuals with severe mental health challenges [SMHCs] often have unmet needs that are beyond the scope of traditional mental health services. These needs are typically met by community agencies, charities and peer support groups. Happy Chat [HC] is one such peer-support group whose goal is to address social isolation, and loneliness by creating a safe space to facilitate the development of informal friendships among individuals with SMHCs in the community. Nineteen participants were interviewed as part of a qualitative evaluation of HC. Data were subjected to thematic analysis. Four categor

The mechanisms underlying detrimental effects of mutant Huntingtin on striatal dysfunction in Huntington's disease (HD) are not well understood. Although retinoic acid receptor beta (RARβ) emerged recently as one of the top regulators of transcriptionally downregulated genes in the striatum of HD patients and mouse models, its involvement in disease progression remains elusive. Here we challenged functional relevance of RARβ dysregulation in HD onset and progression. Using a series of genetic mouse models, we investigated whether genetically reduced Rarβ expression synergizes with disease- cau

The potential impact of nanoplastics (NPs) on human carcinogenic processes is a matter of growing concern, particularly in light of the global plastic pollution crisis. Although the potential effects of NPs on human health have been well investigated, many uncertainties remain regarding their role in tumor behavior. Upon exposure, NPs can enter the bloodstream and are prone to interacting with plasma proteins to form a protein corona (PC), which can influence their interactions with cancer cells. However, how the PCs adsorbed on NPs affect the particle-to-tumor cell interaction and their effec

This article presents the history of typhoid fever in Chile since its definition as a clinical entity until our days. From this history is evident the long lasting confusion with typhus (rickettsial spotted fever) in Chile although the identity and characteristics of typhoid fever had been established in the first half of nineteenth century in Europe. This confusion could be explained because some clinical features are similar in both diseases (high fever and delirium) and because of its occurrence in poor hygienic conditions. This misconception was resolved only during 1918 on occasion of a m
