Positive Illusions: The Role of Cognitive Distortions Related to Gambling and Temporal Perspective in Chasing Behavior.

Chasing, or continuing to gamble to recoup previous losses, is a behavioral marker and a diagnostic criterion for gambling disorder. Even though chasing has been recognized to play a central role in gambling disorder, research on chasing is still relatively scarce. This study first empirically investigated the interplay between cognitive distortions related to gambling, temporal perspective, and chasing behavior in a sample of habitual gamblers. Two hundred and fifty-five adults took part in the study. Participants completed the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS), the Gambling Related Cognition

Impaired configural processing for other-race faces revealed by the Thatcher illusion.

The Thatcher illusion, where participants perceive upright faces with inverted eyes and mouth as grotesque but are markedly impaired in detecting grotesqueness when the entire faces are inverted, is commonly interpreted as reflecting disrupted configural and/or holistic processing in inverted faces. Previous research has suggested that other-race faces may be processed with a comparatively reduced reliance on configural (and more featural) information than own-race faces. The own-race bias refers to the tendency to recognise faces from a more familiar morphological group - mostly the own 'race

Acute technostress, schizotypal traits, and visual illusion perception in the general population.

The present study investigated the impact of acute technostress (i.e., stress induced by technology - here, computer glitches) and schizotypy on visual illusions, including the Müller-Lyer, Ebbinghaus, Poggendorff, and Ponzo illusions. While previous research has examined perceptual anomalies in schizophrenia and schizotypy, the role of stress in perceptual distortions has been overlooked until recently. In particularly, its acute effects are unknown. Healthy participants completed four visual illusion tasks under two conditions: a standard condition and a technostress-inducing condition invol…

The long and winding road to menopause: a true milestone or an illusion for women with endometriosis?

OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study was to determine whether women with and without a history of endometriosis experience menopause differently, in terms of their satisfaction with quality of life. METHODS: This study was conducted at Fondazione IRCCS Ca' Granda Policlinico Hospital, Milan, from October 2022 to April 2024. The total sample included 394 postmenopausal women aged 48-55 years: 197 with a clinical history of endometriosis (group 1) and 197 without (group 2). All participants were required to complete a series of validated questionnaires assessing quality of life (Short

Not proportional after all: Investigating speed perception with the beep-speed illusion.

Recently, a new audiovisual illusion, the beep-speed illusion, was discovered in which a visually presented, linearly moving object is perceived to be faster if directional changes occur simultaneously with a short auditory burst compared to a purely visually presented moving object of the same speed. The present study uses this new illusion to test the representation of motion speed in human perception. Across two experiments (each N = 30), the beep-speed illusion was observed with circular motion of the objects and across different speeds of the audiovisual object. Interestingly, the size of

Reduced likelihood of the Poggendorff illusion in cerebellar strokes: a clinical and neuroimaging study.

This study aimed to test our hypothesis that the cerebellum plays an important role in the generation of the optical-geometric illusion known as the Poggendorff illusion, the mechanism of which has been explained by accumulated experience with natural scene geometry. A total of 79 participants, comprising 28 patients with isolated cerebellar stroke, 27 patients with isolated cerebral stroke and 24 healthy controls, performed Poggendorff illusion tasks and 2 different control tasks. We also investigated core brain regions underpinning changes in the experience of the illusion effect using multi

The slime hand illusion: Nonproprioceptive ownership distortion specific to the skin region.

The "slime hand illusion" is a simple and robust technique that uses mirror-visual feedback to produce a nonproprioceptive ownership distortion. The illusion can be easily evoked by the participant watching the experimenter pinching and pulling a chunk of slime in a mirror while the participant's hand, hidden behind the mirror, is similarly manipulated. This procedure produces a feeling of one of their fingers or the skin of their whole hand being stretched or deformed in a similar way to the visible slime. A public experiment found that more than 90% of participants reported a strong sense of

A standardized, incremental protocol to increase human tolerance to the cross-coupled illusion.

BACKGROUND: Humans can adapt to the "Coriolis" cross-coupled illusion with repeated exposure, improving the tolerability of faster spin rates and enabling short-radius, intermittent centrifugation for artificial gravity implementation. OBJECTIVE: This investigation assesses the criticality of personalization in acclimation to the cross-coupled illusion. METHODS: We used the median stimulus sequence of our previous effective and tolerable personalized, threshold-based protocol to develop a standardized (non-personalized) approach. During each of 10, 25-minute sessions, the spin rate was incre

Hypoxia-ischemia is not an antecedent of most preterm brain damage: the illusion of validity.

UNLABELLED: Brain injury in preterm newborn infants is often attributed to hypoxia-ischemia even when neither hypoxia nor ischemia is documented, and many causative speculations are based on the same assumption. We review human and animal study contributions with their strengths and limitations, and conclude that - despite all the work done in human fetal neuropathology and developmental models in animals - the evidence remains unconvincing that hypoxemia, in the fetus or newborn infant, contributes appreciably to any encephalopathy of prematurity. Giving an inappropriate causal name to a diso

Causal Dynamics of Scalp Electroencephalography Oscillation During the Rubber Hand Illusion.

Rubber hand illusion (RHI) is an important phenomenon for the investigation of body ownership and self/other distinction. The illusion is promoted by the spatial and temporal contingencies of visual inputs near a fake hand and physical touches to the real hand. The neural basis of this phenomenon is not fully understood. We hypothesized that the RHI is associated with a fronto-parietal circuit, and the goal of this study was to determine the dynamics of neural oscillation associated with this phenomenon. We measured electroencephalography while delivering spatially congruent/incongruent visuo-

The Poggendorff illusion driven by real and illusory contour: Behavioral and neural mechanisms.

The Poggendorff illusion refers to the phenomenon that the human brain misperceives a diagonal line as being apparently misaligned once the diagonal line is interrupted by two parallel edges, and the size of illusion is negatively correlated with the angle of interception of the oblique, i.e. the sharper the oblique angle, the larger the illusion. This optical illusion can be produced by both real and illusory contour. In this fMRI study, by parametrically varying the oblique angle, we investigated the shared and specific neural mechanisms underlying the Poggendorff illusion induced by real an

The Mirror Illusion Increases Motor Cortex Excitability in Children With and Without Hemiparesis.

BACKGROUND: Mirror therapy provides a visual illusion of a normal moving limb by using the mirror reflection of the unaffected arm instead of viewing the paretic limb and is used in rehabilitation to improve hand function. Little is known about the mechanism underlying its effect in children with hemiparesis. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of the mirror illusion (MI) on the excitability of the primary motor cortex (M1) in children and adolescents. METHODS: Twelve patients with hemiparesis (10-20 years) and 8 typically developing subjects (8-17 years) participated. Corticospinal reorgan

Aristotle's illusion in Parkinson's disease: evidence for normal interdigit tactile perception.

Sensory alterations, a common feature of such movement disorders as Parkinson's disease (PD) and dystonia, could emerge as epiphenomena of basal ganglia dysfunction. Recently, we found a selective reduction of tactile perception (Aristotle's illusion, the illusory doubling sensation of one object when touched with crossed fingers) in the affected hand of patients with focal hand dystonia. This suggests that reduced tactile illusion might be a specific feature of this type of dystonia and could be due to abnormal somatosensory cortical activation. The aim of the current study was to investigate

Opposing roles of sensory and parietal cortices in awareness in a bistable motion illusion.

Motion-induced blindness (MIB) is a bistable visual phenomenon in which stationary disks surrounded by a moving pattern intermittently disappear from the viewer's awareness. We explored the cortical network that subserves the MIB phenomenon by targeting its constituent parts with disruptive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), in the form of continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS). Previous neuroimaging and TMS studies have implicated the right posterior parietal cortex (rPPC) in perceptual transitions such as binocular rivalry, while the visual area V5/MT has been suggested to play a ke

Illusory object motion in the centre of a radial pattern: The Pursuit-Pursuing illusion.

A circular object placed in the centre of a radial pattern consisting of thin sectors was found to cause a robust motion illusion. During eye-movement pursuit of a moving target, the presently described stimulus produced illusory background-object motion in the same direction as that of the eye movement. In addition, the display induced illusory stationary perception of a moving object against the whole display motion. In seven experiments, the characteristics of the illusion were examined in terms of luminance relationships and figural characteristics of the radial pattern. Some potential exp

Reports of wins and risk taking: an investigation of the mediating effect of the illusion of control.

Two experiments examined the relationships between the knowledge that another person has won in a gamble, the illusion of control and risk taking. Participants played a computer-simulated French roulette game individually. Before playing, some participants learnt that another person won a large amount of money. Results from a first experiment (n = 24) validated a causal model where the knowledge of another person's win increased the illusion of control, measured with betting times, expectancy and self-reports on scales, which in turn encourages risk taking. In the second experiment (n = 36), s

Room tilt illusion in Parkinson's disease: loss of spatial reference frames?

Room tilt illusion, a misperception that the entire room is tilted, is a rare but nonspecific neurological symptom. We report a patient with Parkinson's disease who developed typical room tilt illusion. Single photon emission computed tomography demonstrated hypoperfusion of the posterior area of the right intraparietal sulcus, which is related to discriminating the surface orientation of three-dimensional objects. Therefore, it is possible that dysfunction of this region of the intraparietal sulcus may have disrupted the integration of spatial reference frames for internal representation of t
