The National Plan for Vaccine Prevention 2017-2019 has expanded the vaccination offer including new vaccines, enlarging the target population and introducing for the first time in Italy a life-course approach to vaccination. A "lifetime immunization schedule" is aimed to reduce the burden and the related costs of vaccine-preventable diseases through effective vaccination programs. However, to counteract the national steady downward trend in the uptake of vaccinations that caused a drop of the vaccination coverage below the 95% threshold to allow herd immunity, it was decided to make 10 vaccinat

Due to the omnipresent risk of epidemics, insect societies have evolved sophisticated disease defences at the individual and colony level. An intriguing yet little understood phenomenon is that social contact to pathogen-exposed individuals reduces susceptibility of previously naive nestmates to this pathogen. We tested whether such social immunisation in Lasius ants against the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae is based on active upregulation of the immune system of nestmates following contact to an infectious individual or passive protection via transfer of immune effectors amon

The paper of Baxter et al., recently published in Pediatrics show through five cross-sectional studies, a high impact of vaccination in the decline of varicella incidence and hospitalizations in all age groups in the United States between 1995 and 2009. As a consequence of herd immunity, varicella incidence has also diminished in those non vaccinated, which indicates no shift in the burden of varicella to older age groups.

INTRODUCTION: Pneumococcal diseases (including septicemia, meningitis, pneumonia, and upper respiratory infections) constitute a major public health problem. The World Health Organization recommends pneumococcal conjugate vaccine immunization of young children worldwide.
AREAS COVERED: We reviewed evidence on the effects of the 10-valent pneumococcal non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae protein D conjugate vaccine (PHiD-CV), which is used in childhood immunization programs in over 45 countries or regions. The effectiveness of PHiD-CV against invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), pneumonia, and

BACKGROUND: In Japan, 5000-300,000 persons contracted measles every year until 2001. The measles/rubella-combined (MR) vaccination at age 17-18 years (phase 4 MR vaccination: MR-IV) was launched in 2008 in Japan as a measles-rubella catch-up campaign. A serological assessment of this campaign has not been thoroughly performed.
METHODS: Titers of anti-measles and anti-rubella immunoglobulin G antibodies, and past medical history including measles and rubella vaccination and infection were obtained from first-year university students in 2008 and 2009, and the immune status against measles and r

Since routine meningococcal C conjugate vaccination was introduced into Canada in 2002, there have been a large regional variation in the routine programs, changes to the timing of the infant series in some provinces, and wide differences in catch-up programs. As immunization is viewed as a provincial responsibility, less attention has been paid to determining national coverage rates and the direct and indirect effects of the widely varying provincial/territorial vaccination programs on the nation as a whole. Canada's disjointed regional immunization campaigns leave the population at risk of d

Hybrid immunity has been accepted as the most robust immunity to fight against SARS-CoV-2. The hybrid immunity against the virus is produced in individuals who have contracted the disease and received the COVID-19 vaccine. This happens due to the cumulative effect of natural and acquired (vaccine) immunity, which provides higher antibody responses compared to natural and vaccine-produced immunity alone. Scientists have noted that it provides about 25 to 100 times higher antibody responses than natural and vaccine-produced immunity alone. Here, we have tried to illustrate the molecular basis of

(1) According to the World Health Organization, immunization prevents between 2 million to 3 million deaths every year across the world. (2) When immunization rates are high, herd immunity develops and limits the spread of the disease, which helps protect those who cannot be vaccinated. (3) Vaccination rates for measles, mumps and rubella vary across the United States, ranging from 85.6 percent in Washington, D.C., to 99.4 percent in Mississippi.

BACKGROUND: To assess the rabies vaccination program in dogs in Japan, a system to monitor the proportion of domestic dogs in Japan with immunity at population level is critical but has yet to be established.
METHODS: We developed a mathematical model to capture the history of vaccination over the course of a dog's life. To quantify the system, an epidemiological survey of dog owners was carried out (n = 534 owners), allowing us to reconstruct the age-specific history of vaccination as a function of calendar time and age and to estimate conditional probabilities of vaccination at age a given

Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, the primary pathogen of enzootic pneumonia, occurs worldwide and causes major economic losses to the pig industry. The organism adheres to and damages the ciliated epithelium of the respiratory tract. Affected pigs show chronic coughing, are more susceptible to other respiratory infections and have a reduced performance. Control of the disease can be accomplished in a number of ways. First, management practices and housing conditions in the herd should be optimized. These include all-in/all-out production, limiting factors that may destabilize herd immunity, maintaini

Without sufficient herd immunity through either vaccination or natural infection, the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic is unlikely to be controlled. Waning immunity with the currently approved vaccines suggests the need to evaluate vaccines causing the induction of long-term responses. Here, we report the immunogenicity and efficacy of our adjuvanted single-dose Rabies-vectored SARS-CoV-2 S1 vaccine, CORAVAX, in hamsters. CORAVAX induces high SARS-CoV-2 S1-specific and virus-neutralizing antibodies (VNAs) that prevent weight loss, viral loads, disease, lung inflammation, and the cytokine stor

Background/Objectives: Mpox (monkeypox) is a zoonosis with origins in a currently unknown African reservoir. The first epidemiological accounts of mpox date back to the early 1980s, yet mpox only emerged as a pandemic threat in 2022-2023, more than 40 years later. This scenario is very different from those of other emerging diseases such as HIV and SARS, which immediately spread globally, in fully susceptible populations, starting from patients zero. Methods: We use mathematical modeling to illustrate the dynamics of mpox herd immunity in small communities in touch with the mpox natural reserv

Between January 2002 and December 2004, a population-based study on the effects of climate and mosquito indices on the incidences of dengue fever (DF) and dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) was conducted in Trinidad, West Indies. The incidence of DF was 5.05 cases/1000 population in 2002, largely as the result of a major outbreak, but declined to 0.49 case/1000 in 2004. The monthly Aedes aegypti (L.) Breteau indices (BI) did not decline over the 3-year study period, however, but increased from a mean of 29 in 2002 to one of 36 in 2004, with seasonal variations (BI of 30-46 and 20-34 were recorded

In 1988, there was a large outbreak of enteroviral meningitis in the Republic of Croatia and in other parts of Yugoslavia as well. A total of 4079 cases of enteroviral meningitis were registered with one fatal outcome (Mb 8.7 0/ooo). The outbreak was caused by echovirus 4. Analysis of epidemiological, virologic and ecological data for 1988, as well as for a number of previous years, showed the following: an upward morbidity trend observed from 1958 to 1979 turned to a high level stationary trend with irregular annual oscillations. A cyclic morbidity trend was noticed with peaks in 9-10 years.

On 30 October 2017, an outbreak of measles started in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine (NA) region in France among Bordeaux University students before spreading to other regions. Until 1 July 2018, 1,101 cases were reported in NA, including 98 complications and two deaths. Cases were related to clusters (e.g. students, healthcare workers) in 16%; 81% of cases were not vaccinated against measles as recommended. Vaccination coverage above herd immunity threshold remains the main preventative outbreak measure.

Brucellosis remains a major zoonotic threat in Iran, where sheep and goat farming play a crucial role in agricultural production. This study examines the relationship between vaccination coverage and brucellosis prevalence at animal and herd levels across Iran's diverse small ruminant production systems. Our cross-sectional study (2021-2024) included 389,225 animals from 3929 herds across rural, traditional, and nomadic systems. Tests such as the Rose Bengal Plate, Wright, and 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME) detected brucellosis, and bacteria from clinical samples were isolated. Multivariable mixed-e

The oral polio vaccine (OPV) contains live-attenuated polioviruses that induce immunity by causing low virulence infections in vaccine recipients and their close contacts. Widespread immunization with OPV has reduced the annual global burden of paralytic poliomyelitis by a factor of 10,000 or more and has driven wild poliovirus (WPV) to the brink of eradication. However, in instances that have so far been rare, OPV can paralyze vaccine recipients and generate vaccine-derived polio outbreaks. To complete polio eradication, OPV use should eventually cease, but doing so will leave a growing popul
