Lifetime Cannabis Use Disorder Is Not Associated With Lifetime Impulsive Behavior and Severe Violence in Patients With Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders From a High-Security Hospital.

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: The link between substances of abuse, impulsivity, and violence in psychotic patients remains unclear. This study aims at unraveling whether cannabis use disorder is associated with violent and/or psychotic behavior in patients who are hospitalized in a high-security hospital. METHODS/PROCEDURES: We conducted a cross-sectional retrospective study in 124 patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders admitted to a high-security hospital. Lifetime violent behavior was assessed using the History of Aggressive Behavior Form-Subject of the MacArthur Violence Risk Assessment Stu

Correlation patterns between lifetime mood spectrum, impulsivity, and disordered eating behaviors in candidates to bariatric surgery.

OBJECTIVE: A mutual influence between mood disorders and obesity has been reported. Maladapting eating behaviors associated with mood spectrum swings may play a pivotal role in the development and maintenance of obesity. Considering that, the aim of the present study is to investigate the relationship between problematic eating behaviors, namely emotional eating, grazing and night eating, with impulsivity and lifetime mood spectrum (mood, energy, cognition, rhythmicity and vegetative functions) in severe obese patients seeking bariatric surgery. METHODS: 304 obese outpatients were recruited a

The role of metacognitive beliefs in impulse control disorders and addictive-like behaviors in Parkinson's disease: an exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are clinically relevant non-motor complications of Parkinson's disease (PD). ICDs include gambling, hypersexuality, compulsive shopping, binge eating, hobbyism/punding, and dopamine dysregulation syndrome. Although dopaminergic replacement therapies are a key risk factor, only a subgroup of treated patients develop ICDs, potentially suggesting that neuropsychological differences may contribute to interindividual variability. Dysfunctional Metacognitive Beliefs (MBs) have recently been associated with addictive behaviors in the general population, bu

Internet Altruistic Behaviors in Adolescents: Roles of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Impulsiveness, and Perceived Social Support.

This study examined the associations of an attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosis, impulsivity, and perceived social support with Internet altruistic behaviors (IABs) in adolescents and the associations of IABs with depression, suicidality, and nonsuicidal self-injury in this group. In total, 176 adolescents aged between 11 and 18 years with ADHD and 173 adolescents without ADHD (matched with the ADHD group by sex and age) participated in this study. The adolescents rated their IABs on the Internet altruistic behavior scale, impulsivity on the Barratt impulsiveness scale ver

NLRP3-GABA signaling pathway contributes to the pathogenesis of impulsive-like behaviors and cognitive deficits in aged mice.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PND), such as delirium and cognitive impairment, are commonly encountered complications in aged patients. The inhibitory neurotransmitter γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is aberrantly synthesized from reactive astrocytes following inflammatory stimulation and is implicated in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases. Additionally, the activation of NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome is involved in PND. Herein, we aimed to investigate whether the NLRP3-GABA signaling pathway contributes to the pathogenesis of aging mice's PND

Evaluating the use of lamotrigine to reduce mood lability and impulsive behaviors in adults with chronic and severe eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Gold-standard psychological and pharmacological treatments for bulimic-spectrum eating disorders only result in remission for around 50% of patients; patients with affective lability and impulsivity represent a subgroup with particularly poor outcomes. Both dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), a treatment for emotion dysregulation, and lamotrigine, a mood stabilizer, have demonstrated promise for targeting affective lability and impulsivity; however, data exploring the combination of these interventions remain limited. OBJECTIVE: We followed a group of women with recurrent dysregul

Relating Compulsivity and Impulsivity With Severity of Behavioral Addictions: A Dynamic Interpretation of Large-Scale Cross-Sectional Findings.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Impulsivity and compulsivity are two key temperament traits involved in behavior regulation. The aim of this study was to test several existing theories in explaining the role of impulsivity and compulsivity in symptom severity in various behavioral addictions. METHODS: Data were collected from a (representative) general population sample (N = 2,710, mean age:39.8 years (SD:13.6), 51% woman), and from people who are at increased risk of having a behavioral addiction (N = 9,528 in total, mean age: 28.11 (SD:8.3), 34.3% woman), including people with problematic gaming and in

Impulse control disorders and related behaviors in Parkinson's disease: risk factors, clinical and genetic aspects, and management.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review recent findings and research directions on impulse control disorders and related behaviors (ICDRBs) in Parkinson's disease (PD). RECENT FINDINGS: Longitudinal studies found that prevalence increases during PD progression, incident ICDRBs being around 10% per year in patients treated with dopaminergic therapies. Screening tools and severity scales already developed have been validated and are available in several countries and languages. The main clinical risk factors include young age, male gender, type, doses and duration of dopaminergic therapy, PD motor severit

The factors associated with impulse control behaviors in Parkinson's disease: A 2-year longitudinal retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Impulse control behaviors (ICBs) are impulsive-compulsive behaviors often associated with dopamine replacement therapy in Parkinson's disease (PD). Although remission can occur in ICB, only four reports on the ratio of remission and the persistence of ICB have been published, and the associated factors with ICB remission or persistence have been little known. Therefore, we conducted a longitudinal assessment of the remission, persistence, and development of ICB and those associated factors in patients with PD. METHODS: We retrospectively investigated a PD database at Aomori Pref

GH response to intravenous clonidine challenge: absence of relationship with behavioral irritability, aggression, or impulsivity in human subjects.

Previous study suggests a role for post-synaptic alpha(2)-noradrenergic receptor sensitivity in irritability and/or aggression and impulsivity. In this study, we conducted intravenous challenges with the alpha(2)-noradrenergic agonist, clonidine, to assess the relationship between measures of impulsive aggression and post-synaptic alpha(2)-noradrenergic receptor sensitivity in human subjects. Subjects included 38 individuals with personality disorder and 28 healthy volunteer controls. Measures included the Irritability score and the Total Assault score from the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory

Correlates of injury among ED visits: effects of alcohol, risk perception, impulsivity, and sensation seeking behaviors.

This cross-sectional study used a random sample of 412 Emergency Department (ED) patients to test the following hypothesizes: 1) injury would be positively associated with problem drinking and recent drinking; 2) impulsivity and sensation seeking would be positively associated with injury, while risk perception would be negatively associated with injury. Results show recent drinking is associated with 2-fold increase in the odds of injury [OR and 95%; CI = 2.34 (1.07-5.10)] while problem drinking and personality factors were unrelated to injury. Other significant predictors were gender and age

Simultaneous Use of Alcohol and Marijuana Among College Students: The Role of Expectancies, Impulsivity and Behavioral Emotion Regulation.

Background: The simultaneous use of alcohol and marijuana (SAM, using both substances on the same occasion) leads to increased risk of negative outcomes compared to single-substance use. Impulsivity is a recognized risk factor for SAM use, yet less is known about the roles of behavioral emotion regulation and SAM-related expectancies. Objectives: We examined if recent SAM users could be distinguished from alcohol-only users and nonusers based on impulsivity traits, behavioral emotion regulation strategies, and outcome expectancies related to SAM use. We also assessed if frequency of alcohol us

Impulsivity, decision-making, and risk behavior in bipolar disorder and major depression from bipolar multiplex families.

OBJECTIVES: Bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are characterized by specific alterations of mood. In both disorders, alterations in cognitive domains such as impulsivity, decision-making, and risk-taking have been reported. Identification of similarities and differences of these domains in BD and MDD could give further insight into their etiology. The present study assessed impulsivity, decision-making, and risk-taking behavior in BD and MDD patients from bipolar multiplex families. METHODS: Eighty-two participants (BD type I, n = 25; MDD, n = 26; healthy relatives (HR)

A behavioral timing intervention upregulates striatal serotonergic markers and reduces impulsive action in adult male mice.

Many studies support the hypothesis that time-based interventions reduce impulsive behavior in rodents. However, few studies have directly assessed 1) how such interventions affect impulsive action rather than impulsive choice, 2) if intervention effects differ by sex, and 3) how time-based interventions affect neurochemistry in regions mediating decision-making and reward. Thus, we assessed how a fixed-interval (FI) intervention initiated during late adolescence and extending into adulthood affected dopaminergic and serotonergic analytes in the frontal cortex and striatum and subsequent impul…

Frequency of binge eating behavior in patients with borderline personality disorder and its relation to emotional regulation and impulsivity.

PURPOSE: Eating disorders are common among patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD), contributing to their lack of treatment response and bad prognosis. In this context, it is helpful to examine the relevance of eating behavior and to understand whether borderline traits are higher in those individuals. In this study, a sample of patients with BPD screened to determine the frequency of binge eating (BE) behaviors and its relation to impulsivity and emotional dysregulation. METHOD: Seventy participants aged 25.81 ± 6.34 years were recruited from Okasha Institute of psychiatry, Cairo
