BACKGROUND: Hyponatremia and syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) is a potentially fatal adverse effect of antidepressants (ADs) and antipsychotics (APs), although its frequency and onset time have not been well documented.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the frequency and onset time of AD- or AP-induced hyponatremia/SIADH.
METHODS: We used plural data-mining techniques to search the US Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database for reports on hyponatremia/SIADH induced by psychotropic drugs from January 2004 to June 2020. For each item, we assessed

OBJECTIVE: Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is a common infection of the central nervous system. TBM with hyponatremia is very common. If hyponatremia is not treated properly, it might affect the outcome of TBM patients.
METHODS: We included 226 patients diagnosed with TBM who were admitted from August 2010 to August 2015 and retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of patients with and without hyponatremia.
RESULTS: In total, 45.6% (103/226) patients had hyponatremia and 54.4% (123/226) patients did not have hyponatremia. Serum sodium and severity of TBM were independent prediction factors of

The syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) is a disorder of water balance characterized by hypotonic hyponatremia and impaired water excretion. The diagnosis of SIADH is based on the exclusion of other hyponatremic conditions, the presence of hyposmolality with inappropriate urine osmolality and a urine sodium concentration usually above 30 mEq/L. Some simple and readily available biologic parameters can be helpful in the diagnosis of SIADH (low urea and uric acid levels). The recent syndrome of nephrogenic syndrome of inappropriate antidiuresis (NSIAD) is also discus

We report the first case of the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) associated with cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. A 32-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of pandysautonomic signs and symptoms. Thrombocytopenia and hyponatremia were present. Serum anti-CMV IgM and IgG antibodies were positive. Despite hyponatremia, urinary osmolality exceeded plasma osmolality and plasma vasopressin levels related to plasma osmolality were high. Restriction of water intake and administration of dimethylchlorotetracycline improved hyponatremia, suggesting this

Even though many disorders of the nervous system have been reported to be associated with the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH), the association of this syndrome with multiple sclerosis is extremely rare. We describe a patient with multiple sclerosis who developed SIADH and hyponatremia.

The syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) is a common cause of hyponatremia. In this study a case of SIADH caused by head trauma is reported, in which severe hyponatraemia, escorted by life-threatening neurological symptoms was observed that could only be managed by parenteral sodium chloride infusions. Severe hyponatraemia was accompanied by elevated urinary sodium excretion, a characteristic sign of SIADH. After introducing the therapy with demeclocycline, a tetracycline type antibiotic that inhibits the renal action of antidiuretic hormone, serum sodium levels

A 69-year-old woman with a history of diabetes and hypertension, was referred to the Hospital of Laredo because of hyponatraemia. She had weakness and slight dyspnoea with no evidence of extracellular fluid volume depletion or oedema. Serum sodium level on admission was 125 mol l-1, plasma osmolality 270 mosmol kg-1, simultaneous urine osmolality was 580 mosmol kg-1 and urine sodium 32.6 mmol l-1. She had been treated with enalapril (20 mg) daily for 4 months. She was diagnosed with the Syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) that was reversed after cessation of tre

Of 99 patients with adult tetanus, 7 developed the clinical and biochemical features of the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH). The diagnosis for these 7 patients was severe tetanus (dysphagia with frequent severe spasms); 5/7 patients had evidence of autonomic overactivity (tachycardia, sweating, cardiovascular lability, and hypersalivation). They all responded favorably to fluid restriction, SIADH was self-limited and resolved as the disease regressed.

A relationship between acute psychosis, water ingestion, and the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) has been reported. This syndrome was observed in a psychotic patient who ingested massive amounts of water and became symptomatically hyponatremic with seizures. Although he had been taking haloperidol, the SIADH responded to fluid restriction alone. SIADH was clearly established, and a temporal relationship to his acute exacerbation of psychosis and polydipsia could be shown. This case illustrates that psychosis, polydipsia, and SIADH are often associated as a t

The unusual combination of isolated deficiency of ACTH secretion and primary hypothyroidism was demonstrated in a 72-year-old man. Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) levels were elevated despite severe hyponatremia. This abnormality was corrected by salt replacement and hydrocortisone therapy. These results suggest that the elevated ADH levels were appropriate for the volume depletion caused by the hypoadrenalism and were not related to the hypothyroidism.
