Sickle cell disease in India.

A screening programme involving 9,822 hospitalised patients revealed the frequency of individuals with S gene to be 11.1 per cent. A population survey of 1,000 randomised subjects from amongst about 70,000 people in one block of the area showed the frequency to be 15.1%. The gene is not confined to tribal peoples, but is prevalent throughout the society, being more frequent in scheduled castes and some caste Hindus. With the available Indian data a sickle cell belt can be mapped out in the country. Analysis of clinical data on the first 700 cases of sickle cell disease seen in the Sickle Cell …

Childhood leprosy in northern India.

During a period of eight years, 132 new leprosy cases were detected in children ages 3 to 19 years. Borderline tuberculoid leprosy was present in 59%, tuberculoid in 7.6%, and indeterminate type in 3.8% patients. Single skin lesions were seen in a significant number (43.9%) of patients. Bacillus-positive disease was detected more often (17.4%) than in adults. A high frequency (66.6%) of nerve involvement was also detected. Deformities were uncommon. Males were more often affected than females, especially in the ages 10 to 14 and 15 to 19 years. A history of contact was available in only 19.7%

Smallpox eradication in Rajasthan, India.

In 1962, when the smallpox eradication programme was launched in India, there were 3909 reported cases in Rajasthan. Mass vaccination was introduced but had little impact on the incidence of the disease; in 1970, 4074 cases were reported and in 1971, the reported incidence (4821 cases) was the highest in India. Changes in the vaccination technique, the use of a new and potent vaccine and the introduction of a new strategy based on surveillance and containment of outbreaks, rather than mass vaccination, brought good results. By 1972, only 1970 cases were reported and endemic smallpox was elimin…

Latent Tuberculosis in India: An Overview.

Treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is essential for tuberculosis (TB) eradication. LTBI patients serve as a reservoir for act … reening is still the targeted tuberculin skin test (TST). Although LTBI therapy is challenging, for India to become TB-free, it must first focus on testing and treating LTBI.
