Glia-derived nexin/protease nexin-1 is expressed by a subset of neurons in the rat brain.

Glia-derived nexin/protease nexin-1 (GDN/PN-1) is a serine protease inhibitor that is secreted by glial cells and fibroblasts in culture. In the adult mammalian nervous system it has been shown to be expressed in the olfactory system and by some glial cells in response to neuronal injury. In situ hybridization and immunocytochemical studies were performed to identify the structures expressing GDN/PN-1 in the developing and adult rat brain. In contrast to a transient widespread expression during pre- and postnatal development, some brain structures constitutively express GDN/PN-1. These include

Brain neurotransmitters in dystonia musculorum deformans.

We examined histologically and biochemically the brains of two patients with generalized childhood-onset dystonia musculorum deformans. We found no important histologic changes in the basal ganglia, cerebral cortex, higher brain-stem nuclei, locus ceruleus, or raphe nuclei. Similarly, the activity of choline acetyltransferase and the levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid and glutamic acid in the cerebral cortex and basal ganglia were within the control range. In contrast, the norepinephrine concentrations were markedly and consistently decreased in the lateral and posterior hypothalamus, mamillary

Cryptococcal meningitis in an immunocompetent host: acute bilateral sensorineural hearing loss with normal intracranial pressure.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cryptococcal meningitis typically affects immunocompromised hosts and presents with headache and fever. Sensorineura … ial pressure, potentially through direct involvement of central auditory pathways, particularly the inferior colliculi. Clinicians should consider cryptococcal infection in the differential diagnosis of acute bilateral hearing loss with CNS lesions, even in immunocompetent hosts, despite normal initial imaging and intracranial pressure.

Changes in [3H]PAF binding and PAF concentrations in gerbil brain after bilateral common carotid artery occlusion: a quantitative autoradiographic study.

This study investigated the distribution of platelet activating factor (PAF) binding sites in the brain and their involvement in global ischemia in a model of bilateral common carotid occlusion in the gerbil. In sagittal sections of gerbil brain, labeling with [3H]PAF was mainly located in the cortex, hippocampus and cerebellum. The corpus striatum, the superior and inferior colliculi showed lower binding, while the thalamus was only weakly labeled. Scatchard analysis of the data obtained from displacement curves with unlabeled PAF revealed the presence of one or two populations of binding sit…

[Two cases of unilateral lesion of the inferior colliculus presenting with temporally changing, distinctive tinnitus and hearing impairment].

We report two cases of unilateral lesion of the inferior colliculus presenting with distinctive tinnitus and hearing impairment. Case 1 was a 40-year-old woman under treatment for multiple sclerosis who developed sudden tinnitus in her bilateral ears, initially resembling a "propeller"-like sound, which evolved into high-pitched "hyun-hyun" tones and subsequently into sustained "hyuun-hyuun" tones. She also exhibited impaired perception of spoken language. Brain MRI revealed a new small lesion in the right inferior colliculus. Case 2 was a 49-year-old man who experienced sudden onset of tinnit

Age-related differences in GABAergic synapses across the central inferior colliculus in the Fischer Brown Norway rat.

Presbycusis, one of the most widespread disorders, is in part associated with the loss of temporal precision within the central auditory system. A contributor to the dysfunctional temporal precision during aging is the substantial downregulation of GABA in the central inferior colliculus (ICc), the hub of ascending and descending inputs of the auditory midbrain. However, how GABAergic inputs across the tonotopic axis of the ICc change with age has not been well explored. We sought to determine age-related changes to GABAergic synapses in the lemniscal ICc, and if changes are uniform across the

Neurodegeneration after repeated noise trauma in the mouse lower auditory pathway.

High intensity noise exposure leads to a permanent shift in auditory thresholds (PTS), affecting both peripheral (cochlear) tissue and the central auditory system. Studies have shown that a noise-induced hearing loss results in significant cell loss in several auditory structures. Degeneration can be demonstrated within hours after noise exposure, particularly in the lower auditory pathway, and continues to progress over days and weeks following the trauma. However, there is limited knowledge about the effects of recurring acoustic trauma. Repeated noise exposure has been demonstrated to incre

A Cortico-Collicular Amplification Mechanism for Gap Detection.

Auditory cortex (AC) is necessary for the detection of brief gaps in ongoing sounds, but not for the detection of longer gaps or other stimuli such as tones or noise. It remains unclear why this is so, and what is special about brief gaps in particular. Here, we used both optogenetic suppression and conventional lesions to show that the cortical dependence of brief gap detection hinges specifically on gap termination. We then identified a cortico-collicular gap detection circuit that amplifies cortical gap termination responses before projecting to inferior colliculus (IC) to impact behavior.

CB1 cannabinoid receptor-mediated anandamide signaling mechanisms of the inferior colliculus modulate the haloperidol-induced catalepsy.

The inferior colliculus (IC), a midbrain structure that processes acoustic information of aversive nature, is distinguished from other auditory nuclei in the brainstem by its connections with structures of the motor system. Previous evidence relating the IC to motor behavior shows that glutamatergic and GABAergic mechanisms in the IC exert influence on systemic haloperidol-induced catalepsy. There is substantial evidence supporting a role played by the endocannabinoid system as a modulator of the glutamatergic neurotransmission, as well as the dopaminergic activity in the basal nuclei and ther

Sodium salicylate reduces the level of GABAB receptors in the rat's inferior colliculus.

Previous studies have indicated that sodium salicylate (SS) can cause hearing abnormalities through affecting the central auditory system. In order to understand central effects of the drug, we examined how a single intraperitoneal injection of the drug changed the level of subunits of the type-B γ-aminobutyric acid receptor (GABAB receptor) in the rat's inferior colliculus (IC). Immunohistochemical and western blotting experiments were conducted three hours following a drug injection, as previous studies indicated that a tinnitus-like behavior could be reliably induced in rats within this tim

Efferent pathways modulate hyperactivity in inferior colliculus.

Animal models have demonstrated that mild hearing loss caused by acoustic trauma results in spontaneous hyperactivity in the central auditory pathways. This hyperactivity has been hypothesized to be involved in the generation of tinnitus, a phantom auditory sensation. We have recently shown that such hyperactivity, recorded in the inferior colliculus, is still dependent on cochlear neural output for some time after recovery (up to 6 weeks). We have now studied the capacity of an intrinsic efferent system, i.e., the olivocochlear system, to alter hyperactivity. This system is known to modulate
