PURPOSE: We report a patient with a recurrent pelvic tumor after abdominoperineal resection of a rectal carcinoma who was treated sufficiently by repeated intra-arterial infusions of 5-fluorouracil.

CONCLUSIONS: Intra-arterial high-dose cisplatin chemoradiation (CRT-IA) with sodium thiosulfate (STS) causes relatively less severe cisplatin ototoxicity than intravenous cisplatin chemoradiation without STS (CRT-IV). The results of this study also suggest that early detection of ototoxicity is possible by testing the hearing loss at ultra-high frequencies.

BACKGROUND: Diffuse cerebral vasospasm following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) refractory to medical management can be treated with intra-arterial administration of vasodilators, but valid bedside monitoring for the diagnosis and therapeutic assessment is poorly available. We demonstrate the successful application of regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO(2)) monitoring with multichannel near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in assisting intra-arterial infusions of fasudil hydrochloride to a patient suffering from post-SAH vasospasm in the distal vascular territories.

PURPOSE: To report globe salvage rates, patient survival and adverse events of ophthalmic artery chemosurgery (OAC) for International Classification of Retinoblastoma (ICRB) group D retinoblastoma (naive and after prior failures).
METHODS: Single institution retrospective review of all Group D eyes treated with OAC from 5/2006-12/2012. Patients were treated according to our previously-published techniques. Primary outcome was globe retention without need for external beam radiotherapy (EBRT). Demographics, prior treatments, OAC agents used, and adverse events were also recorded.

Ovariectomized rats received intra-arterial infusions of phenylephrine and nicotine. Estrogen treatment for five days prior to these challenges diminished laser Doppler measures of cochlear blood flow (CBF) responses to phenylephrine and blood pressure responses to nicotine. Progesterone enhanced CBF responses to both phenylephrine and nicotine; combined progesterone and estrogen treatment enhanced blood pressure responses to phenylephrine. These results suggest that ovarian steroid-mediated cardiovascular effects may influence cochlear blood flow and potentially hearing functions.
