BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world, with overall mortality exceeding 40% even with treatment. Effective efforts for screening and prevention are most likely to succeed in patient groups identified as high risk for colorectal cancer, most notably the hereditary intestinal polyposis syndromes. In these syndromes, benign polyps develop throughout the intestinal tract prior to the development of colorectal cancer, marking the patient and associated family for precancer diagnosis followed by either close surveillance or preventive treatment.

A solitary Peutz-Jeghers-type polyp of the rectum in a 64-year-old Japanese man is reported. Barium enema and endoscopic examination revealed a solitary polypoid lesion in the rectum. Two unusual cases of small intestinal intussusception presenting as bowel obstruction are presented. They both had freckle-like pigmentation of the perioral area, palms and soles of the feet with intestinal polyps which acted as lead points in the intussusception. Peutz-Jeghers syndrome was diagnosed. This report highlights the high risk of cancer of the intestines and extra-intestinal sites associated with this interesting but rare condition.

In this report, the less common oral findings occurring in Gardner's syndrome are described, which occurred concurrently with colorectal polyposis. In addition, what clinically appeared as small intestinal polyps, microscopically represented nodular lymphoid hyperplasia, as reported in the literature. Review of the literature showed the oral findings reported here are not common and that enzyme assays can help detect polyps at an early stage of this complex syndrome.

Adult intussusception is clinically rare. We report a case with colon intussusception caused by a pedunculated polyp of the sigmoid colon in a 54-year-old male. Abdominal ultrasonographic screening for hematochezia showed intussusception in the sigmoid colon, demonstrating a multiple concentric ring sign and a mobile leading colon polyp. Histological examination of a biopsy specimen of the polyp revealed adenoma. This report suggests that ultrasound imaging is a modality of choice for differential diagnosis of intestinal intussusception with hematochezia in adults.

The authors underline the important aspects of juvenile familial polyposis (JFP), a disease transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait. Inflammatory fibroid polyps of the gastrointestinal tract represent a relatively rare entity. Although the histopathological classification, the etiology and the pathogenesis of this lesion remains unclear, the biological dignity is commonly understood as benign. In a prospective study 76 gastric polyps (of 67 patients) were investigated consecutively by forceps biopsy and by endoscopic polypectomy. The results were compared histologically. Differences arose only in the group where focal foveolar hyperplasia had been diagnosed by forceps biopsy. OBJECTIVE: To report a case of rectal cancer in a patient with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS).
CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND INTERVENTION: A 20-year-old woman with intermittent bloody stool of 4 months was admitted for examination. Gastroendoscopy revealed multiple polyps involving the stomach, small intestine, colon and a rectal adenocarcinoma. A diagnosis of PJS was made based on intestinal polyps with characteristic pathology and melanotic macules on the lips. After surgery and chemotherapy upon follow-up at 8 months, the patient did not have any signs of recurrence.
