Genetic movement disorders in patients of Jewish ancestry.

IMPORTANCE: Genetic diseases often cluster in different ethnic groups and may present with recognizable unique clinical manifestations. OBJ … gene mutation is responsible for most early-onset autosomal dominant dystonia, and 90% of Ashkenazi Jews who develop early-onset disease have TOR1A-related dystonia. Familial Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis tend to cluster among Jews of North African descent, and Machado-Joseph disease is particularly frequent in Yemenite J …

Childhood sexual abuse, mental health, and religion across the Jewish community.

Current estimates of childhood sexual abuse among Jews in the United States are only available for females and do not include a spectrum of religiosity. We examined sexual abuse, mental health, and religion, in a religiously diverse sample of male and female Jewish adults from North America, using a novel methodology to minimize sampling/response biases. A total of 372 diversely religious Jews participated. Prevalence of any form of childhood sexual abuse was statistically equivalent to national rates, except that females reported less involuntary penetration (OR = 0.53). All Jewish religious …

From praise to prejudice: How positive stereotypes reinforce antisemitism.

Antisemitism-defined as prejudice and hostility toward Jews-is traditionally studied by examining explicit negative stereotypes and historical discriminatory actions against Jewish communities. However, this article explores an often overlooked and understudied dimension: how positive stereotypes about Jewish people paradoxically reinforce antisemitism and contribute to their marginalization. While negative stereotypes about Jews are widely recognized as harmful and unwelcomed, positive stereotypes-such as perception of high intelligence and financial achievements-are frequently misunderstood …

History of past sexual abuse in married observant Jewish women.

OBJECTIVE: The authors examined instances of past sexual abuse and related demographic characteristics in the self-reports of a select group of married observant Jewish women. METHODS: Orthodox Jewish married women (N=380) ages 19 to 58 responded to advertisements asking them to complete an anonymous questionnaire about sexual experiences, including sexual abuse. RESULTS: Sexual abuse was reported by 26% of the respondents surveyed, with 16% reporting abuse occurring by the age of 13. More ultra-Orthodox Jews reported abuse than modern-Orthodox Jews. Women who were raised observant reported …

Cancer incidence in Israeli Jewish survivors of World War II.

BACKGROUND: Israeli Jews of European origin have high incidence rates of all cancers, and many of them were exposed to severe famine and stress during World War II. We assessed cancer incidence in Israeli Jewish survivors of World War II. METHODS: Cancer rates were compared in a cohort of 315 544 Israeli Jews who were born in Europe and immigrated to Israel before or during World War II (nonexposed group, n = 57 496) or after World War II and up to 1989 (the exposed group, ie, those potentially exposed to the Holocaust, n = 258 048). Because no individual data were available on actual Holocau…

A population-genetic test of founder effects and implications for Ashkenazi Jewish diseases.

A founder effect can account for the presence of an allele at an unusually high frequency in an isolated population if the allele is selectively neutral and if all copies are identical by descent with a copy that either was carried by a founder individual or arose by mutation later. Here, a statistical test of both aspects of the founder-effect hypothesis is developed. The test is performed by a modified version of a program that implements the Slatkin-Bertorelle test of neutrality. The test is applied to several disease-associated alleles found predominantly in Ashkenazi Jews. Despite conside…

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether mutations in the bone morphogenetic protein receptor 2 gene (BMPR2), initially reported in primary pulmonary hypertension, were present in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension and scleroderma spectrum of disease. Methods. BMPR2 gene mutations were determined using nucleic acid sequencing in 24 patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension and scleroderma spectrum of disease and in 2 control groups, 96 healthy North American individuals and 100 Israeli Ashkenazi Jews. The patients also had antinuclear antibody determinations and underwent right heart cat…

The founder mutation MSH2*1906G-->C is an important cause of hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer in the Ashkenazi Jewish population.

Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) is caused by mutations in the mismatch-repair genes. We report here the identification and … immunohistochemical analysis. In an analysis of a population-based incident series of 686 Ashkenazi Jews from Israel who have colorectal cancer, we identified 3 (0.44%) mutation carriers. Persons with a family history of colorectal or endometrial cancer were more likely to carry the mutation than were those without such a family history (P=.042), and t …

Non-Ashkenazi Jewish Origin is Associated with Early Onset Alzheimer's Disease.

Early-onset Alzheimer's disease (EOAD) accounts for 1-5% of Alzheimer's disease cases and is associated with specific ethnicities. It has been our impression that non-Ashkenazi Jews have a higher rate of EOAD and we therefore explored this hypothesis. We performed a retrospective case control study of EOAD cases referred to our cognitive neurology clinic between January 1999 and December 2016. Patients (n = 129) were compared to age- and geographically-matched controls generated from the Second Israeli National Health Survey (n = 1,811). Data on country of origin, education, dementia family hi…

Epidemiology and clinical aspects of enteric fever in Israel.

Enteric fever decreased in Israel in the last 50 years, but its current epidemiology is unknown. In a nationwide study, we evaluated all cases of enteric fever from 1995 to 2003. On hundred thirty-six cases met the case definition. During the period studied, the incidence of enteric fever decreased from 0.42 to 0.23/100,000. A total of 57.4% of the cases were acquired abroad. The incidence of endemic enteric fever was 2.7 times higher in Arabs than in Jews. In Arabs, Salmonella Typhi was the causative agent in all cases, and almost all cases were endemic. In Jews, most cases were imported, wit…

Environmental risk factors for subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE).

In Israel, SSPE has been shown to be much more frequent among Sephardic Jews and Arabs than among Ashkenazic Jews. In the present study, we tried to explore environmental factors that may be of etiological importance and explain these differences in prevalence. The study is a case-control one, which includes 95 patients and 2 groups of controls, with 95 people in each. The general population controls were group-matched to the case group by sex, age, and ethnic origin. The family controls consisted of the sibling closest in age to each patient. A statistically significant positive correlation w…

A Pst+ polymorphism in the HEXA gene with an unusual geographic distribution.

A polymorphic variant in the human HEXA gene is described. This gene encodes the alpha-subunit of hexosaminidase A, the enzyme which is deficient in Tay-Sachs disease (TSD). In individuals carrying the polymorphism there is a T-->C transition at position -6 in intron 13. The substitution creates a site for the restriction endonuclease Pst1. This variant has an unusual ethnogeographic distribution. It occurs on 1.4% of non-TSD carrier chromosomes in Ashkenazi Jews. All individuals ascertained carrying the Pst+ allele have ancestry in Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine. By contrast, no individuals c…

Specific mutations in the HEXA gene among Iraqi Jewish Tay-Sachs disease carriers: dating of founder ancestor.

The incidence of Tay-Sachs disease (TSD) carriers, as defined by enzyme assay, is 1:29 among Ashkenazi Jews and 1:110 among Moroccan Jews. An elevated carrier frequency of 1:140 was also observed in the Iraqi Jews (IJ), while in other Israeli populations the world's pan-ethnic frequency of approximately 1:280 has been found. Recently a novel mutation, G749T, has been reported in 38.7% of the IJ carriers (24/62). Here we report a second novel HEXA mutation specific to the IJ TDS carriers: a substitution of cytosine 1351 by guanosine (C1351G), resulting in the change of leucine to valine in posi…

Holocaust inversion and justification of anti-Jewish aggression: Evidence from two national surveys in Norway.

While perpetrators of anti-Jewish harassment and violence are a small minority in democratic societies, they rely on a larger number of people who justify such aggression or silently condone it. Using data from nationally representative surveys of the Norwegian population, I report two studies investigating whether endorsement of Holocaust inversion-the belief that Israel treats Palestinians as badly as Jews were treated during World War II-is associated with (a) justification of harassment and violence against Jews and (b) refusal to take a stance against such aggression. Study 1 (N = 1,575) …

Modern anti-Semitism and anti-Israeli attitudes.

Anti-Semitism is resurgent throughout much of the world. A new theoretical model of anti-Semitism is presented and tested in 3 experiments. The model proposes that mortality salience increases anti-Semitism and that anti-Semitism often manifests as hostility toward Israel. Study 1 showed that mortality salience led to greater levels of anti-Semitism and lowered support for Israel. This effect occurred only in a bogus pipeline condition, indicating that social desirability masks hostility toward Jews and Israel. Study 2 showed that mortality salience caused Israel, but no other country, to perc…
