Compounding for feline herpetic keratitis.

Feline herpetic keratitis (infectious keratoconjunctivitis), an infection of the conjunctiva and cornea that is common in cats, involves a three-pronged treatment approach: (1)antiviral therapy, (2)immunomodulatory therapy, and (3)antibacterial therapy. Since very few agents have been approved for the treatment of feline herpetic keratitis, and many of the drugs that were approved at one time for this indication can no longer be purchased, compounding pharmacists can play a vital role in the prevention and treatment of this infection. Investigators at the Colorado State University College of V…

Keratitis due to Shigella flexneri.

Multiresistant Shigella flexneri isolates were cultured from the cornea and stool of a girl. Genetic analysis showed the isolates were identical. Shigella spp. are rare causes of ulcerative keratitis; there have only been 14 published cases since 1943. Although prognosis after local treatment is good, shigellosis is a systemic infection, possibly leading to dehydration.

Initial treatment of microbial keratitis.

PURPOSE: The common occurrence of failed medical treatment in microbial keratitis led us to investigate this phenomenon. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all ulcers that presented to our department for 24 consecutive months. We classified each ulcer as either a therapeutic success or failure based on a precise definition of the response to initial antibiotic selection. We then analyzed multiple factors including: antibiotic selection, ophthalmic disease, ulcer characteristics, and management, to determine their significance in the success or failure in treating microbial keratitis.
