Ocular complications of Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis in patients with AIDS.

Recent reports suggest that acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients are at higher risk of developing mucocutaneous reactions such as toxic epidermal necrolysis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS). Resultant dry eye may be further exacerbated by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) related lacrimal gland dysfunction and lead to a chronic keratoconjunctivitis. We report one patient with AIDS and toxic epidermal necrolysis and two patients with AIDS and SJS who developed severe dry eye misdiagnosed as infectious keratoconjunctivitis. Cicatrizing mucocutaneous reactions should be suspected

Bactericidal activity of lachrymal secretion and complement system in copper deficient bovines.

Copper deficiency in humans and animals has been related to increased susceptibility to infections. Neutrophils are one of the most studied components of the immune response; however, to the best of our knowledge, other defenses of the innate immune system have not been analyzed in copper-deficient animals. Our previous studies in copper-deficient bovines have shown increased susceptibility to infectious keratoconjunctivitis, an ocular disease caused by Moraxella bovis. The objective of this work was to evaluate the bactericidal activity of lachrymal secretion and complement system, two main m

Identification of bovine carriers of Moraxella bovis by comparative cultural examinations of ocular and nasal secretions.

The carrier state of Moraxella bovis was investigated, using bacteriologic examinations of ocular and nasal secretions from cattle under experimental and natural conditions of exposure and management. Moraxella bovis was isolated throughout the year from the ocular and nasal secretions of cattle naturally affected with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis. There was also 1 case of nasal transmission of M bovis without isolation of M bovis from ocular secretions and 1 case of M bovis isolation from the vagina of a calf contracted by contact with a calf affected with infectious bovine keratoco

Ovine keratoconjunctivitis experimentally induced by instillation of Mycoplasma conjunctivae.

Five sheep, free from Mycoplasma conjunctivae and ocular Chlamydia infection, were experimentally inoculated with M. conjunctivae and five more sheep were exposed to the infection by contact. Keratoconjunctivitis developed in all ten sheep. As in natural outbreaks of infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC), clinical signs were generally moderate and transient, and recurred in some sheep. M. conjunctivae was detected throughout the 53-day observation period. Clinical diagnosis was confirmed by histopathologic examination of three sheep. Moraxella ovis, found in six of the ten sheep before the sta

Characterization of hemolysin of Moraxella bovis using a hemolysis-neutralizing monoclonal antibody.

A concentrated bacterial culture supernatant from the hemolytic Moraxella bovis strain UQV 148NF was used to immunize mice and generate monoclonal antibodies (MAbs). One, MAb G3/D7, neutralized the hemolytic activity of M. bovis and recognized a 94-kDa protein by Western blot analysis in hemolytic M. bovis strains representing each of the different fimbrial serogroups. Exposure of corneal epithelial cells to M. bovis concentrated culture supernatants demonstrated a role for an exotoxin in the pathogenesis of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis, while neutralization of hemolytic and cytotoxi

Mycoplasmas and ovine keratoconjunctivitis.

The clinical course of an outbreak of keratoconjunctivitis in housed lambs and their dams was followed. Signs were transient generally and became severe in only a small proportion of lambs. The outbreak became most obvious when the lambs were 46 to 55 days old, when 46.9 per cent were affected. Mycoplasma conjunctivae isolations, confirmed by comparison with the type strain by biochemical and serological reactions, increased to 62.1 per cent of all eyes swabbed, but no correlation could be demonstrated between presence of the organism and clinical status. The reasons for this are discussed. My

Chemoprophylaxis of Shigella flexneri keratoconjunctivitis in rabbits.

Chloramphenicol, chlortetracycline, streptomycin, and sulfisoxazole prevented keratoconjunctivitis in rabbit eyes infected with Shigella flexneri. The route of administration of the agent and the dose were important variables in controlling the infectious process. This assay system appears to be a useful technique for the in vivo evaluation of chemotherapeutic agents.

Isolation of Moraxella spp. from horses with conjunctivitis in Southern Brazil.

Infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) is the most frequent ocular disease in livestock worldwide and is primarily caused by Moraxella bovis, M. ovis, and/or M. bovoculi. The economic impact of IKC is mainly due to ocular damage, which leads to weight loss, management difficulties, pain and discomfort, and cost of treatments. In horses, limited information is available on the association of Moraxella spp. with keratoconjunctivitis. The present report describes two cases of equine keratoconjunctivitis caused by members of the genus Moraxella. Both animals presented with lacrimation, conjunctivit

The nursing role in epidemiology, risk management, and patient-public education.

Epidemiology encompasses the identification of infectious disease, the vectors of transmission, the sources of contamination, the patient population exposed or involved, containment practices, and preventative measures to stop further transmission of the disease. Epidemic keratoconjunctivitis is a common infectious disease in ophthalmology. It can be contracted from interpersonal exposure, contact with contaminated items, or iatrogenic transmission from the health-care settings and providers. The interview process, plus patient education, is the method of epidemiologic assessment that acts as

A randomised control trial to evaluate the effectiveness of a commercial vaccine for pinkeye in Australian beef cattle.

Pinkeye (a generic term to describe infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis) is a significant disease of cattle worldwide, impacting productivity and animal welfare. One commercial pinkeye vaccine, a systematically administered Moraxella bovis bacterin, has been available in Australia since 2007. This is the first field trial of the effectiveness of this vaccine for the prevention of naturally occurring disease in Australia. Extensively run beef herds in southwest Queensland that regularly experienced pinkeye were enrolled in the trial and animals were randomly allocated to vaccinated and contr

[Summary of the practice guideline 'The red eye' (first revision) of the Dutch College of General Practitioners (NHG)].

The revised NHG-guideline 'The red eye' provides recommendations for the diagnosis and therapy in patients with a red eye. In the presence of pain, decreased visual acuity and photophobia (alarm symptoms) should be considered as sight threatening conditions. In most instances a red eye results from conjunctivitis. The complaint of (an) early morning glued eye(s) makes a bacterial origin of acute infectious conjunctivitis more likely. Itching and a history of infectious conjunctivitis make the probability of bacterial involvement less likely. The type of discharge does not help to adequately di

Hemagglutination, autoagglutination and pathogenicity of Moraxella bovis strains.

Three isolates of Moraxella bovis, recovered from cattle with signs of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis, were tested for autoagglutinating activity, hemagglutinating activity and pathogenicity in young calves. Only the autoagglutinating and hemagglutinating isolates were pathogenic in calves. Treatment of the pathogenic isolates with magnesium chloride eliminated their pathogenic effects.

Excellent outcome of primary Neisseria meningitidis keratoconjunctivitis.

Infectious conjunctivitis is a very common presentation to medical professional and ophthalmologist all over the world. Although its typically self-limiting and treatable in almost all of the cases, but we need to be aware of the rare and potentially life threatening if the cause is not promptly identified and treated accordingly. In our case report, we highlighted the rare case of Neisseria meningitidis as a primary cause of keratoconjunctivitis. Neisseria meningitidis is a rare etiology of keratoconjunctivitis and its ocular presentations are quite similar with other bacterial or viral infec

Cervid herpesvirus 2 infection in reindeer: a review.

Herpesviruses of the genus Varicellovirus are known to infect and cause disease in a variety of ruminant species, but the impact of cervid herpesvirus 2 (CvHV2) in reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) is mostly unknown. Reindeer is a circum-polar species with a total estimated number of more than 5 million animals. Mortality may reach high values, as in northern Norway, especially in calves (37%; 2005-2006), and disease can potentially account for some of this mortality. CvHV2 has been isolated during a natural outbreak of infectious keratoconjunctivitis, indicating an etiologal link. Serological scre
