Flexible ureteroscopic lithotripsy for the treatment of upper urinary tract calculi in infants.

We evaluated the clinical value of flexible ureteroscopic lithotripsy for the treatment of upper urinary tract calculi in infants. Fifty-five infants with upper urinary tract calculi were included in this study: 41 males and 14 females. Retrograde intrarenal surgery was performed by an 8 Fr/30 cm flexible ureterorenoscope (POLY®) combined with a holmium laser. CT scanning or radiography of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder region was performed one month after the operation to confirm the clearance of calculi. All the 55 infants with calculi in 74 sides underwent 66 flexible ureteroscopic litho

Flexible ureterorenoscopy in position or fusion anomaly: Is it feasible?

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the results of flexible ureterorenoscopy (F-URS) with holmium laser in the treatment of kidney stones with ectopic and fusion anomalies (horseshoe kidney and rotation anomalies). METHOD: We reviewed data from 13 patients with fusion and ectopic renal anomalies that underwent F-URS from April 2011 to April 2017. We analyzed demographic and clinical data (age, gender, BMI, anatomical abnormality, location and dimension of the renal calculi) and perioperative data (method of treatment, stone-free rate, number of days with DJ catheter and perioperative complications). RESUL

Results and complications of spinal anesthesia in percutaneous nephrolithotomy.

INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is the treatment of choice for large kidney calculi, staghorn calculi, and calculi that are multiple or resistant to shock wave lithotripsy. In many centers, PCNL is performed under general anesthesia. However, complications under spinal anesthesia can be less frequent. We evaluated the impact of spinal anesthesia on intra-operative and postoperative outcome in patients undergoing PCNL. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The intra-operative and postoperative anesthetic and surgical outcomes were evaluated in 160 consecutive patients who underwent PCNL und…

Simultaneous treatment of renal cysts and ipsilateral stones with retroperitoneoscopic surgery: report of two cases.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: A simple kidney cyst is the most common type of renal cyst. These cysts are usually asymptomatic and detected incidentally upon radiological exams of the abdomen. Currently, there are many methods of treating renal cysts, in which retroperitoneoscopy to remove the cyst is a safe and more effective method. However, the simple renal cyst with renal pelvis stones will raise a question in the approach. CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, we present two cases, admitted to the hospital with abdominal pain and diagnosed with a simple renal cyst with renal calculis. The tw

Preliminary evaluation of the Polish tissue adhesive "Chirurcoll/Polfa" in urology.

During the past two years, from June 7, 1974 to August 9, 1976, the authors used the Polish tissue adhesive "Chirurcoll/Polfa" in 60 operated patients. The operations were performed on the solitary kidney, on the kidneys of staghorn calculi, in fixation of a floating kidney and, fixation and elevation of the bladder in women with urinary stress incontinence. In all cases the postoperative course was smooth and the results of operation were satisfactory. None of the patients were re-operated and histological examinations were not performed.

Percutaneous dissolution of uric acid calculi with THAM irrigation.

We describe two patients suffering from uric acid calculi; one had uremia due to obstruction in one kidney, and the other retained fragments after percutaneous nephrolithotomy. They were successfully treated by irrigation of a THAM (tris-hydroxy-methyl-aminomethane) solution through percutaneous nephrostomy.

Pertinence between Preoperative Renal Function and Composition of Renal Calculi in Elderly Patients: A Retrospective Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Kidney stone disease poses a significant challenge in the geriatric population. Preoperative renal function has been speculated to influence the composition of renal calculi, and consequently, the management approach. We studied the correlation between preoperative renal function and the composition of renal calculi in elderly patients, which could have implications for optimizing therapeutic strategies. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study investigated patients aged 60 years and older who were hospitalized for kidney stones from January 2021 to December 2023. Based on their p

[Diagnosis of ureteral calculi using ultrasonography, intravenous urography and unenhanced helical computed tomography].

INTRODUCTION: The pain in the loins is usually the consequence of renal colic caused by small ureteral calculi. ULTRASONOGRAPHY: Ultrasonography is an efficient tool in the detection of calculi in the pyelocalyx system, but it may not be sufficient for the area of renal pelvis and ureter, as wll as for the ureter and the ureterovesical junction. INTRAVENOUS UROGRAPHY: Radiolucent stones, dilatation of the ureter and of the pyelocalyx system were identified on the urogram, which are common signs of ureter calculosis. Defects in the contrast can be caused by blood clots and papillary or malign

[Multiple endoscopy for the treatment of upper urinary tract calculi following ileal conduit: a case report and literature review].

Upper urinary tract calculi with infection is a quite difficult acute urologic emergency. And what is more, upper urinary tract obstruction after radical cystectomy following urinary diversion may be fatal in the vulnerable patients with this kind of situation. Postoperative anatomy and other factors affect the upper urinary tract calculi, and urinary tract infection greatly increased the risk. But it is particularly difficult to handle with patients with poor general condition and septic shock treatment, so how to optimize the selection program is worth further studying. A 65-year-old man was

[FEATURES OF PERCUTANEOUS NEPHROLITHOTRIPSY IN PATIENTS WITH UROLITHIASIS OF SOLITARY KIDNEY].

The article describes the results of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in 49 urolithiasis patients with a solitary kidney. In 44 (89.8%) patients the calculi were located in the kidney, in 5 (10.2%) patients - in the upper third of the ureter. The calculi were single (18; 36.7%), multiple (14; 28.6%) or stag-horn (17; 34.7%). Efficiency of PCNL estimated immediately after surgery and at the end of the third month of observation was 75.5 and 93.9%, respectively. Stone size (p=0.594), the baseline state of urodynamics of the upper urinary tract (p=0.205) did not affect the renal clearance at P

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy in the prone position: treatment of stones in the distal ureter or anomalous kidney.

A total of 15 patients underwent ESWL using the Dornier HM3 lithotriptor with the patient in the prone position. The stones were in the distal ureter over the sacroiliac joint in 10 patients, 8 of whom had undergone unsuccessful ureteroscopic manipulation. Two patients had horseshoe kidneys with stones that were too anterior to permit accurate targeting with the patient in the standard supine position. One patient had a solitary stone in a pelvic kidney and 1 had an obstructing ureteropelvic junction stone in a crossed ectopic kidney. The final patient had a reconstructed lower urinary tract w

Retroperitoneal laparoscopic pyelolithotomy in an ectopic pelvic kidney.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Retroperitoneal laparoscopic pyelolithotomy was performed in an ectopic pelvic kidney with renal pelvis calculi. METHODS AND RESULTS: Laparoscopic pyelolithotomy was successfully performed in an ectopic pelvic kidney by using the retroperitoneal route. The total operation time was 130 minutes, and the estimated blood loss was < 50 mL. The patient was discharged on the second postoperative day without any complications. CONCLUSION: Laparoscopic pyelolithotomy is an effective treatment option for management of stones in the pelvis of an ectopic pelvic kidney. The ret
