From January to December 2008, balloon kyphoplasty was performed on 45 consecutive female patients with primary single-segment vertebral compression fractures as an inpatient procedure. All of the treated vertebral bodies were located within the thora-columbar region (T11-L2). Demographic data such as age, body mass index, fracture age, hospital stay, lumbar spine bone mineral density, and amount of bone cement injected per vertebrae were recorded. Patients were analyzed clinically by ambulatory status and the visual analog scale (VAS) for pain. Lateral radiographs were used to measure changes…

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis with subsequent osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures is an increasingly important disease due not only to its significant economic impact but also to the increasing age of our population. Pain reduction and stabilization are of primary importance with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. Although many patients heal with conservative treatment consisting of rest or activity modification, analgesics, and bracing, the management of severe pain compels some patients to seek surgical intervention via 2 procedures: vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty. Although th…

Background and Objectives: Osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) are a common cause of morbidity in the elderly, often resulting in pain, reduced mobility, and diminished quality of life. Treatment options include conservative management, vertebroplasty (VP), and kyphoplasty (KP). This study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes and complication rates of patients treated with kyphoplasty/vertebroplasty versus conservative methods and identify risk factors associated with the development of new fractures. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cohort study included patients d…

Vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) are a common injury pattern observed in elderly individuals with osteoporosis. However, the presence of significant spinal deformity and/or advanced vertebral collapse can render kyphoplasty technically challenging. We present the case of a 65-year-old woman suffering from severe osteoporosis who experienced a T5 compression fracture attributed to a pronounced thoracic kyphosis and osteoporosis, with approximately 75% reduction in vertebral height. Despite initial conservative management, the patient's pain persisted. During the procedure, the concave geo…

BACKGROUND: Due to mechanical imbalance in the spine, elderly scoliosis patients tend to develop vertebral fracture nonunion, i.e., Kümmell disease, when osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures occur. However, accompanying vertebral rotational deformities make surgical procedures challenging risky. Such patients are usually compelled to undergo conservative treatment and there are very few reports on minimally invasive surgeries for them. We first-time report a patient with Kümmell disease and lumbar scoliosis treated with percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) under O-arm guidance.

BACKGROUND: Up to 70% of multiple myeloma (MM) patients develop vertebral metastasis and subsequent pathological vertebral fractures (PVF). With contemporary systemic therapies, life expectancy of MM patients has improved drastically, and the need to manage pain and associated disability from PVF is increasingly a high priority. The aim of this review is to provide an updated comprehensive synthesis of evidence in the use of vertebral augmentation, including percutaneous vertebroplasty (PV) and balloon kyphoplasty (BKP), to treat MM-related PVF.
METHODS: A comprehensive multi-database search …

BACKGROUND: Evidence on antibiotic-loaded bone cement remains too vague to guide kyphoplasty in patient care. We clinically evaluated the properties and benefits of a new low viscosity polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement loaded with gentamicin.
METHODS: In this non-randomised, monocentric, prospective open trial, 50 consecutively enrolled patients with fractures of the vertebral body (TH7-L4) due to osteoporosis or trauma were investigated between 2010 and 2013, with a 1-year post-op follow-up per patient. The antibiotic-loaded PMMA bone cement was administered to patients during the su…

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) could achieve rapid pain relief for older patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs). Bone cement in PKP was the key factor keeping the stabilization of the vertebral body. However, the same amount of cement can distribute differently in a vertebral body and can thereby result in different surgery outcomes. Therefore, the volume and distribution of bone cement should be considered as 2 distinct variables to evaluate the effectiveness of PKP.
OBJECTIVES: On the basis of comparing surgery outcomes between patients with different…

ObjectivePercutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) is now widely performed to treat VCF, which is usually caused by osteoporosis. Previous researches have reported unsuspected malignancies found by biopsy. However, the safety and cost-effective profiles of routine biopsy during PKP are unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of routine biopsy during PKP in treatment of VCF.MethodsNinety-three patients (September 2007-November 2010) undergoing PKP without biopsy were reviewed as the control group. One hundred and three consecutive patients (November 2010-September 2013) undergoi…
