A Hospital-Based Retrospective Comparative Study of Complications, Outcomes, Clinical and Laboratory Parameters of Malaria with and without Neurological Involvement.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Classically associated with Plasmodium (P.) falciparum, neurological complications in severe malaria is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. However, reports implicate the long considered benign P. vivax for causing severe malaria as well. We aimed to analyse the cerebral complications in malaria, and study if there is a species-related difference in the presentation and outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively compared patients with malaria hospitalised from 2009-15, with (n=105) and without (n=1155) neurological involvement regarding outcomes, complicatio

Soluble transferrin receptor as a diagnostic laboratory test for detection of iron deficiency anemia in acute illness of hospitalized patients.

BACKGROUND: Many patients in the internal medicine ward have anemia. The etiology for the anemia may be multifactorial and, in the setting of inflammatory process when the ferritin is increased, it is difficult to diagnose iron deficiency anemia. Soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) had been suggested as an indicator for iron deficiency. No study has investigated the meaning of high sTfR as the only positive marker of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) caused by gastrointestinal tract (GIT) bleeding in hospitalized patients. OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate the importance of high levels of sTfR as a marke

Identified cases of acute hepatitis C from computerized laboratory database: a hospital-based epidemiological and clinical study.

OBJECTIVE: Diagnosis of acute hepatitis C (AHC) relies on documented positive-seroconversion of antibody to hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV) that is infrequently encountered. To clarify the epidemiology and clinical course of AHC, we tried to find more AHC patients from a computerized laboratory database by using a supplemental criterion of rising anti-HCV titer. METHODS: All the computerized laboratory databases of anti-HCV and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) were reviewed. Candidates for AHC were identified by either anti-HCV positive seroconversion, rise of anti-HCV titer (signal to cut-off rat

[Techniques applicable to broncho-alveolar lavage fluid in hospital laboratory for the diagnosis of parasitic and fungal pneumopathies in immunosuppressed patients].

Parasitic and fungal organisms which are likely to cause pulmonary infections in immunosuppressed patients can be detected in broncho-alveolar fluid (BAL fluid). Single and standard methods, such as direct examination of the pellet, eosine-methylene blue fast (RAL 555), cultures in usual mediums of mycology must be systematically applied to this sample and may help detect these organisms without further exploration. If the results are negative, more recent techniques can be used if they present a real asset: an easier reading and mostly an improved sensitivity. Such is the case of immuno-fluor

Performance of an enzyme immunoassay test and anaerobic culture for detection of group A streptococci in a pediatric practice versus a hospital laboratory.

The ability of pediatricians and hospital laboratory personnel to detect group A streptococci in patients with suspected streptococcal pharyngitis was evaluated using the TestPack Strep A and anaerobic culture. Duplicate throat specimens (for similar processing by both the pediatricians and laboratory technologists) were simultaneously collected on rayon-tipped swabs from patients with symptoms of pharyngitis. Each swab was first inoculated to a 5% sheep blood agar plate, then tested for group A streptococcus antigen using the TestPack Strep A according to the manufacturer's instructions. Cult

Systemic vasculitis in a district general hospital 1972-1980: clinical and laboratory features, classification and prognosis of 80 cases.

Between 1972 and 1980 a histological diagnosis of vasculitis was made on 80 patients from a district general hospital. These were divided into a polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) group, a rheumatoid vasculitis (RV) group and a heterogeneous group of other vasculitides. There was considerable overlap between the clinical and laboratory features in the three groups. Non-specific symptoms (fever and myalgia), leucocytosis and eosinophilia were the most useful features for distinguishing PAN from the other two groups. Hepatitis B infection was rare (two patients) and hypocomplementaemia was a feature of

Vitamin D Status and Glycemic Control: Experience of the Biochemistry Laboratory, Mohammed VI University Hospital, Oujda, Morocco.

Background Vitamin D is best known for its role in calcium and phosphate homeostasis, but it may also influence metabolic function. It has been suggested that vitamin D may be linked to glucose regulation. Accordingly, vitamin D status has attracted considerable interest as a potential determinant of glycemic control in diabetes. Although multiple studies have suggested that lower serum 25(OH)D concentrations are associated with higher HbA1c, the overall evidence remains mixed. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the association between serum 25(OH)D and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) among ho
