BACKGROUND/AIM: Sensitivity to endocrine disruptors is higher in early life. Endocrine disruptor chemicals can be passed from pregnant women to their babies through the placenta or breast milk during lactation, leading to long-term and potentially permanent adverse effects.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This review evaluates the effects of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) on pregnancy by summarizing findings from experimental and observational studies. Exposure routes, reproductive outcomes, fetal development implications, and potential preventive strategies are analyzed.
RESULTS: Exposure to

Thromboembolic disorders frequently require antithrombotic treatment during pregnancy and lactation. Vitamin K antagonists and heparins are the treatment options of choice in breastfeeding women. Factors including the route of administration, discomfort during treatment, and fetal and neonatal safety affect women's choices about anticoagulant therapy. Direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs) have emerged as alternatives to these agents and may offer advantages compared with vitamin K antagonists. As breastfeeding women were excluded from clinical trials evaluating DOACs, no safety and efficac

Benign breast disease (BBD) is very common among women in their fertile age, but its correlation with breast reproductive function remains unclear. Our study aimed to investigate the relation between BBD and breast-feeding. We collected data on 105 women with BBD and 98 controls, focusing on their reproductive history and breast-feeding. We analysed data by R (version 2.12.1) considering p < 0.05 as significant. The results showed that fibroadenoma represented the most frequent BBD (55%), followed by fibrocystic changes (19%), intraductal papilloma (6%) and inflammatory breast disorders (5%).

Galactorrhea, or inappropriate lactation, is a relatively common problem that occurs in approximately 20 to 25 percent of women. Lactation requires the presence of estrogen, progesterone and, most importantly, prolactin. Stress, suckling, sleep, sexual intercourse and medications may increase prolactin levels, whereas dopamine inhibits its release. The differential diagnosis of galactorrhea includes pituitary adenomas, neurologic disorders, hypothyroidism, numerous medications, breast stimulation, chest wall irritation and physiologic causes. The evaluation includes a thorough history and phys

Barriers to breastfeeding in women with substance use disorders (SUDs) often exist. Neonatal abstinence syndrome-related feeding difficulties, maternal SUD-related maladaptive behaviors, and psychological comorbidities can adversely affect breastfeeding. A neglected barrier that frequently occurs in women with SUDs is a history of sexual abuse. It is important that nurses and providers understand each maternal and/or infant factor that can affect the breastfeeding course to assist effectively with lactation support for these frequently misunderstood dyads.

BACKGROUND: Lactate is traditionally seen as a marker of ischemia and a waste product of anaerobic glycolysis. In the last thirty years a more beneficial side of lactate as an alternative 'glucose sparing' fuel has been demonstrated. However, the translation of these growing insights to clinical practice seems to appear with great delay.
METHODS: A review of the literature was performed, focusing on glucose and lactate in relation to cerebral energy metabolism, in the context of four typical clinical situations, namely (transient states of) low glucose availability for the brain due to hypogl

BACKGROUND: Culling is a major cost for dairy farms but also an essential part in managing herd productivity. This study aimed to identify the culling rates of Estonian dairy cows, identify the farmers' stated reasons and risk factors for culling. This observational study used registry data of all cows from herds with ≥20 cow-years in 2013-2015. Cow lactation-level analyses included data of 86,373 primiparous cows from 409 herds and 177,561 lactations of 109,295 multiparous cows from 410 herds. Weibull proportional hazard regression models were used to identify risk factors for culling due to

The objective was to identify postpartum risk factors between nutritional imbalance and health disorders affecting first-service conception risk (FSCR) in 21 commercial Holstein herds in Reunion Island. Multivariate logistic-regression models including herd as a random effect were used to analyze the relationship between FSCR and energy status, nitrogen status, hepatic function, mineral deficiencies, and postpartum health disorders. Two models (A and B) were built on two subsets of data (n=446 and n=863) with risk indicators measured during the first month of lactation and around time of first

Depressive disorders have a worldwide high prevalence. Fluoxetine (FLX), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant, has been widely prescribed for depression during pregnancy and/or lactation. Since serotonin is a neurotrophic factor, the use of FLX by mothers could disrupt brain development resulting in behavioral alterations in their progeny. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of developmental FLX exposure on sexual behavior, as well as on endocrine parameters, of male mice. Swiss dams were treated daily, by gavage, with 7.5 mg/kg of FLX during preg

Milk fat percentage (MFP) precise prediction is paramount for precision dairy farming and early warning of health issues. However, existing prediction methods primarily rely on single lactation time-series data or statistical models, which often fail to effectively fuse multi-source heterogeneous information and frequently overlook the impact of individual variability. To address current limitations, long short-term memory(LSTM), Stacking ensemble learning, bidirectional encoder representations from transformers(BERT) and low-rank multimodal fusion(LMF) were employed to explore a hierarchical m

Blood lactate and pyruvate levels and lactate-pyruvate ratios were determined in 20 patients with severe hypoxemia due to pulmonary insufficiency, 18 patients having arterial oxygen tensions (pO2) lower than 50 mm. of mercury, and 8 having tensions lower than 40 mm. of mercury. Most of the patients had normal lactate levels and lactate-pyruvate ratios in spite of severe hypoxemia, and there was no correlation between pO2 or oxygen content and raised levels. All but 1 patient with an elevated lactate level and lactate-pyruvate ratio had a disorder of systemic circulation with hypotension. On th

Diabetes in pregnancy is associated with increased risk of cardiometabolic syndrome, mood disorders, intimate partner violence, and additional sequelae. These risks may persist beyond the pregnancy into the postpartum period. Comprehensive management and counseling require an understanding of the physiology of the puerperium, types of potential complications, and evidence behind management options. This review will discuss evidence-based immediate postpartum management, the impact of lactation on diabetes, and the long-term and transgenerational impact of diabetes in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND Pregnancy and lactation-associated osteoporosis (PLO) is a rare condition characterized by fragility fractures occurring during late pregnancy or lactation. It is associated with pregnancy- and lactation-related bone metabolic disorders and risk factors such as low body mass index (BMI). Given the absence of standardized guidelines and limited clinical awareness, PLO is often misdiagnosed or diagnosed late. The patient described in this report experienced both delayed treatment and misdiagnosis. The findings suggest that bisphosphonates have limited efficacy in improving bone minera

Heart rate, respiratory measurements, and Acute Panic Inventory symptoms of 17 patients with panic disorder who experienced panic attacks during a placebo infusion (situationally provoked panic) were analyzed and compared with similar data from a group of 19 patients with panic disorder who panicked during lactate infusion. Previously, it was shown that the group with lactate-induced panic attacks exhibited increased minute ventilation compared with normal control subjects and nonpanicking patients with panic disorder during lactate infusion. The group with situationally provoked panic attacks

Oxytocin (OT) is a nonapeptide mainly produced in the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei. OT in the brain and blood has extensive functions in both mental and physical activities. These functions are mediated by OT receptors (OTRs) that are distributed in a broad spectrum of tissues with dramatic sexual dimorphism. In both sexes, OT generally facilitates social cognition and behaviors, facilitates parental behavior and sexual activity and inhibits feeding and pain perception. However, there are significant differences in OT levels and distribution of OTRs in men from women. Thus, many OT fu
