In recent decades, the excessive use of antibiotics has resulted in a rise in antimicrobial drug resistance (ADR). Annually, a significant number of human lives are lost due to resistant infectious diseases, leading to around 700,000 deaths, and it is estimated that by 2050, there could be up to 10 million casualties. Apart from their possible application as preservatives in the food sector, bacteriocins are gaining acknowledgment as potential clinical treatments. Not only this, these antimicrobial peptides have revealed in modulating the host immune system producing anti-inflammatory and anti

Energy conservation in microorganisms is classically categorized into respiration and fermentation; however, recent work shows some species can use mixed or alternative bioenergetic strategies. We explored the use of extracellular electron transfer for energy conservation in diverse lactic acid bacteria (LAB), microorganisms that mainly rely on fermentative metabolism and are important in food fermentations. The LAB Lactiplantibacillus plantarum uses extracellular electron transfer to increase its NAD+/NADH ratio, generate more ATP through substrate-level phosphorylation, and accumulate biomas

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and bifidobacteria may serve as reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance, but the risk posed by strains intentionally introduced into the agro-food chain has not yet been thoroughly investigated. The aim of our study was to evaluate whether probiotics, starter and protective cultures, and feed additives represent a risk to human health. In addition to commercial strains of LAB and bifidobacteria, isolates from human milk or colostrum, intestinal mucosa or feces, and fermented products were analyzed. Phenotypic susceptibility data of 474 strains showed that antimicrobia

The endogenous microflora of mussels, filter feeders, can include pathogens with resulting food safety concerns. The aim was to develop a cook-then-ferment technology to extend shelf life and safety of a ready-to-eat mussels. Only after cooking to destroy the mussel's endogenous microflora could an edible product be made as determined by pH decline after fermentation and the fate of common pathogens. Perna canaliculus was bought live at retail on many dates. Fermentation was with commercial lactic cultures incubated under vacuum at 30 °C for four days. Using one culture containing Pediococcus

Lactic acid bacteria can act as reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes that can be ultimately transferred to pathogens. The present work reports on the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 16 antibiotics to 25 LAB isolates of five Lactobacillus and one Bifidobacterium species from the human vagina. Acquired resistances were detected to kanamycin, streptomycin, chloramphenicol, gentamicin, and ampicillin. A PCR analysis of lactobacilli failed to identify genetic determinants involved in any of these resistances. Surprisingly, a tet(W) gene was detected by PCR in two Bifidobacterium bifi

Staphylococcus aureus is one of the main causative agents of food poisoning. This bacterium is an important component of cheese microbiota and plays an important role in foodborne diseases. Another important component of the microbiota is the lactic acid bacterium, which actively participates in processes that define the physicochemical, sensorial, and microbiological features of cheese. Of the various microbiological interactions in cheese, the interaction between lactic acid bacteria and Staph. aureus is most relevant. To this end, we evaluated the viability of Staph. aureus strains and the

Vaginal microbiota is essential for mucosal immunity, pathogen defense, and homeostasis. Disruption of this balance can promote opportunistic infections, notably by Candida albicans. This study investigates the therapeutic potential of Morus alba (MA) extract and Lactobacillus rhamnosus (LR) in a rat model exposed to Candida albicans exosomes (CAE). CAE induced a 1.3-5.1-fold upregulation in SAP1-10 gene expression, with SAP4 showing the highest increase (p ≤ 0.05). MA and LR monotherapies selectively suppressed SAP6 (41%) and SAP4 (23%), respectively. Notably, combination therapy (CAE+MA+LR)

BACKGROUND: In the present work, acute gastric ulcer models were constructed by administering hydrochloric acid/ethanol. The mice ingested white jade snail secretion (WJSS) through gastric infusion. Ulcer areas in gastric tissue were recorded, and malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were also measured. Notably, high-throughput 16S rDNA analysis of intestinal flora and determination of amino acid composition in feces were performed to understand the effect of WJSS on model mice.
RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the ulcer area in the WJSS low-, medium- and high-concent

The impact of microplastics (MPs) on the diversity and composition of the gut microbiome has been extensively documented in animal studies, but evidence in humans remains limited. Recognizing the potential differences in MP effects between animal and human gut microbiomes, this review synthesizes current evidence concerning their impact on the human gut microbiota. Furthermore, the potential links between microplastic-induced dysbiosis and the pathogenesis of human diseases were analyzed. Cross-sectional studies have been conducted to explore microplastic exposures (such as in humans who consu

Endometritis is a prevalent inflammatory disorder of the uterine lining that is primarily triggered by microbial infection and poses a significant threat to the reproductive health of women of childbearing age worldwide. Current clinical management relies heavily on empirical antibiotic administration, which is increasingly challenged by antibiotic resistance and disruption of the vaginal microbiota. Herein, we developed a thermosensitive poly(lactic acid-co-glycolic acid)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(lactic acid-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA-PEG-PLGA) hydrogel as a targeted delivery system for natura

The role of enterobacterial flora in the onset and progression of inflammatory bowel diseases is a topic of considerable interest. Here, we assessed the association among enterobacterial flora, dietary factors, and ulcerative colitis (UC) progression. Forty-six patients with UC who were diagnosed as being in remission were enrolled. We collected each patient's stool sample one or two days before diagnostic colonoscopy. After colonoscopy, we observed the patients for one year and then retrospectively divided them into two groups: remission (n = 39) and relapse (n = 7) groups, depending on wheth

Glycerol is one of the most important substrates involved in phospholipid biosynthesis, along with dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP) as an intermediate of glycolysis. Organisms produce glycerol 3-phosphate (G3P) from endogenous DHAP and/or exogenous glycerol to synthesize glycerophospholipids from G3P. On the other hand, organisms can utilize glycerol as a carbon source to generate adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Glycerol metabolism in microorganisms has been investigated for > 50 years. The main research targets have been four bacteria that can utilize glycerol efficiently: Escherichia coli, En

Effective neutralization of strongly alkaline conditions in bauxite residues (BR) is the fundamental step to initiate the process of eco-engineering BR into growth substrate (or soil-like medium) for direct phytostabilization with pioneer plant species. The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of microbial decomposition of organic matter (OM) (i.e., biomass residues) in neutralizing the strong alkalinity of residues under saturated conditions, together with the regulatory role of calcium sulfate (CaSO4) addition. Admixing OM (i.e., sugarcane mulch, Lucerne hay) alone in the BR sig

Recently, accumulating evidence has suggested that gut microbiota may be involved in the occurrence and development of ankylosing spondylitis (AS). It has been suggested that rifaximin have the ability to modulate the gut bacterial communities, prevent inflammatory response, and modulate gut barrier function. The goal of this work is to evaluate the protective effects of rifaximin in fighting AS and to elucidate the potential underlying mechanism. Rifaximin were administered to the proteoglycan (PG)-induced AS mice for 4 consecutive weeks. The disease severity was measured with the clinical an
