An epidemiological study of occupational contact eczema in a furniture factory is presented. The localization, distribution, and clinical features of the skin lesions were characteristic of contact eczema caused by a sensitizing or irritating dust. True teak—Tectona grandis—was the cause of the skin condition. That teak is a fairly potent sensitizer and also contains primary irritants is fully confirmed by the present study. About half the employees who were heavily exposed to teak dust suffered from eczema and/or severe itching. Only 8% of those with slight exposure to teak dust experienced s

The presented study aimed to investigate the antibacterial activity of menthol-the main component of one of the widespread plants of the Lamiaceae family-Mentha arvensis. To investigate the mode of action of menthol, we studied its influence on kanamycin-resistant E. coli pARG-25 and wild-type E. coli BW25113 strains. For this, the effect of menthol on ATPase activity, proton and potassium fluxes, and intracellular pH was investigated under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The results showed that menthol influences these parameters in a concentration- and condition-dependent way. It likely in…

Cancer is still the leading cause of death worldwide, burdening the global medical system. Rosmarinic acid (RA) is among the first secondary metabolites discovered and it is a bioactive compound identified in plants such as Boraginaceae and Nepetoideae subfamilies of the Lamiaceae family, including Thymus masticmasti chinaythia koreana, Ocimum sanctum, and Hyptis pectinate. This updated review is to highlight the chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic effects of RA and its derivatives, thus providing valuable clues for the potential development of some complementary drugs in the treatment of can…

High alkaline and low organic carbon hinder micronutrients, such as copper (Cu), bioavailability in (semi-) arid soils, affecting plant nutrient quality and productivity. This study aimed at investigating the potential beneficial effects of foliar Cu oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) and conventional chelated-Cu applications (0-400 mg Cu/L) on the biomass, physiological biomarkers of plant productivity and oxidative stress, Cu bioaugmentation, and essential oils and secondary metabolites in dragonhead (Dracocephalum moldavica [L.]) grown in Cu-limited alkaline soil in semi-arid condition. The chemical constituents of the aerial parts of Micromeria inodora (Desf.) Benth. (Lamiaceae) collected in western Algeria, an aromatic shrub traditionally consumed as an herbal remedy, have been characterized. Secondary metabolites were extracted using sequential extractions with solvents at different polarity, and they were determined using an integrated nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) approach. The composition of the essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation was characterized by gas chromatography-mass s…

A 26-year-old woman presented with a 12-month history of persistent dermatitis of the lips. She had failed to respond to cosmetic avoidance and therapeutic measures. Patch testing was negative, including her toothpaste and toothpaste flavours. She defied diagnosis until an acute flare followed immediately after dental treatment with a mint flavoured tooth cleaning powder. This led us to prick test her to mint leaves and this was positive. Her cheilitis settled after changing from her mint-flavoured toothpaste. A diagnosis of contact urticaria should be considered in cases of cheilitis of unkno

Lamium flexuosum Ten. is a perennial species, belonging to the Lamiaceae family, that primarily thrives in temperate biomes. Its natural distribution includes Italy, Spain, France, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. In this study, the chemical profile of the essential oil extracted from the aerial parts of the Sicilian accession of this plant, which had never been previously analysed, was assessed using GC-MS. The essential oil (Lf) was found to be rich in sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (65.3%) with β-caryophyllene (21.9%), β-copaene (16.9%) and α-humulene (8.0%) as the predominant compounds. A compar…

Thymol (2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol) is the main monoterpene phenol occurring in essential oils isolated from plants belonging to the Lamiaceae family (Thymus, Ocimum, Origanum, and Monarda genera), and other plants such as those belonging to the Verbenaceae, Scrophulariaceae, Ranunculaceae, and Apiaceae families. These essential oils are used in the food industry for their flavouring and preservative properties, in commercial mosquito repellent formulations for their natural repellent effect, in aromatherapy, and in traditional medicine for the treatment of headaches, coughs, and diarrhea. The dichloromethane extract of the aerial parts of Salvia chrysophylla Stapf (Lamiaceae), which is an endemic species to south-western Anatolia, was studied for non-volatile secondary metabolites for the first time in this study. Structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated as sclareol, β-sitosterol, salvigenin, oleanolic acid and ursolic acid. The lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity and the DPPH free radical scavenging activity of the pure isolates were investigated to establish their antioxidant potential. Their anticholinesterase activity was carried out by the Ellman assay again…

Conradina canescens (Lamiaceae) is an endemic evergreen shrub native to Florida, Mississippi and Alabama, with no phytochemical or biological studies registered in the literature. Thus, a phytochemical study and a toxicity analysis of the chloroform extract obtained from the leaves of C. canescens were performed for the first time. In our preliminary screening, the crude extract and its fractions were subjected to cytotoxicity, antimicrobial and antileishmanial bioassays. The crude extract showed substantial cytotoxic, antimicrobial and antileishmanial activities. A total of six compounds, nam…

The ectoparasitic mite, Varroa destructor is the most serious widespread pest of managed honeybees (Apis mellifera). Several acaricide products, which include essential oils, have been proposed for mite control. In this study, we aimed to apply atmospheric-pressure plasma to modify a cardboard piece surface in order to prolong the delivery of essential oils for controlling Varroa in honeybee colonies. Absorption capacity, release rates and evaporation rates of essential oils were determined. Cardboard piece showed a higher absorption capacity of cinnamon compared to citronella and clove. Surfa

During the last decade there has been growing interest in the formulation of new cosmetic, food and pharmaceutical products containing natural compounds with antioxidant activity and other beneficial properties. Aromatic and medicinal plants have always been the major source of bioactive compounds, especially, wild thyme (Thymbra capitata L.), which has been used since ancient times for its valuable health benefits that could be attributed to the richness of polyphenolic compounds. This study was undertaken with the following aims: to estimate the total polyphenolic content (TPC); to evaluate

This study was conducted to evaluate some terpenes effect on the behavior and immune function of hemocytes in adults of the red palm weevil Rhynchophorus ferrugineus. Six individual different terpenes these are: (±)-menthol, B-citronellol, ( + )-3-carene, (R)- ( + )- limonene, citronella oil and orange terpenes. The results revealed significant differences between the terpenes used on the olfactory response on this insect, in that half of the compounds were very attractive while the other half were repellant to them. This behavior study results with olfactometer citronella oil exhibited an 80%

This study evaluated the antidepressant-like effects of a methanol extract of Leonotis nepetifolia in behavioural tests in mice. Our results showed that a single administration of the extract significantly reduced immobility behaviour in the tail suspension test, while three administrations were necessary to diminish immobility behaviour in the forced swimming test. A daily dose of the extract for 28 days improved body weight gain and significantly reduced corticosterone levels of mice exposed to chronic unpredictable mild stress. Metabolic profiling of the extract revealed that nepetaefolin,
