Unveiling the ototoxic effects of paraquat on zebrafish larva.

Paraquat is a widely utilized herbicide in agricultural fields posing a significant impact on human health and the environment due to its po … In this study, we investigated the harmful effects of paraquat on neuromast hair cells in zebrafish larvae, a powerful model organism for auditory research. We treated sub-lethal concentrations (125 μM to 1000 μM) of paraquat to 3 and 4 dpf zebrafish larvae to investigate its ototoxic effects via rheotaxis behavioral assay, neuromast staining and scanni …

Cutaneous Larva Migrans as a frequent problem in travellers.

Dermatological disorders are among the most common complaints of patients seeking medical assistance after returning from trips to tropical countries. Among exotic dermatoses, one of the frequently encountered diagnoses is Cutaneous Larva Migrans (CLM), primarily caused by the nematodes Ancylostoma braziliense and A. caninum. Cats and dogs, which serve as the definitive hosts for these nematodes, excrete with their stool parasite eggs into the environment, where they transform into larvae. Human infection occurs through the invasive form of the larvae, which penetrate the skin, causing itching…

Possible mechanisms of prednisolone-induced osteoporosis in zebrafish larva.

Glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIOP) is a serious clinical bone disease that results from the long-term consumption of glucocorticoids or glucocorticoid-like drugs. Although many studies have attempted to determine the mechanisms of GIOP, they are still unclear. In this study, we established a zebrafish model of glucocorticoid-like drug-induced osteoporosis by treating larvae with prednisolone. We then quantified the expression of a selection of extracellular matrix (ECM)-, osteoblast-, and osteoclast-related genes. Our results showed that at 15 days post fertilization, zebrafish larvae …

[Cutaneous larva migrans in Turkey: an imported case report].

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is a parasitic infection most commonly found in tropical and subtropical areas. However, with the ease and increase of foreign travel to many countries around the world, the infection is not limited to these areas. CLM is an erythematous, serpiginous infection with skin eruption caused by percutaneous penetration of the larvae to the skin. In this report, a case diagnosed as imported CLM after an Amazon trip and treated with albendazole was presented. A 36 year-old male patient admitted to infectious diseases clinic with intense itching, erythematous, raised, stre…

Loeffler's Syndrome Following Cutaneous Larva Migrans: An Uncommon Sequel.

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is characterized by the formation of distinctive, tortuous, and serpentine skin lesions occurring as a result of epidermal burrowing by certain helminthic larvae. Although this condition is usually uneventful, rarely it may result in patchy pulmonary infiltration with peripheral eosinophilia, also called Loeffler's syndrome. This association is fairly uncommon and is thus being reported.

[Chronic Strongyloides stercoralis infection. Larva currens as skin manifestation].

Strongyloidiasis is a nematode infection that can persist asymptomatically for years. Pathognomonic skin manifestation is the larva currens. A human immunodeficiency virus-infected patient native from an endemic area presented with pruritus, an urticarial serpiginous rash and eosinophilia. The histology was not helpful. Strongyloidiasis was confirmed on the basis of stool and serum examination. He was treated successfully with Ivermectin.

A case report of cutaneous larva migrans in Argentina.

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) represents the most common tropically acquired dermatosis. CLM is caused by infection with hookworm larvae in tropical and sub-tropical areas, and people who have a history of foreign travel and of walking barefoot on sandy soil or beaches are at a high risk of getting infected with it. The diagnosis is usually made on the basis of the typical appearance of the lesion, intense itching and history of foreign travel. CLM is a common parasitic skin disease that can be easily prevented by wearing 'protective' footwear. A case of CLM is described in this article.

Cutaneous larva migrans induced by swallowing live pond loaches.

Freshwater fish, specifically loaches, are potential hosts of Gnathostoma species. Consumption of uncooked freshwater loaches may result in cutaneous larva migrans. We report the case of a 70-year-old Taiwanese man who presented with a serpiginous skin rash on his abdomen. He had eaten live loaches intermittently (sometimes daily) for 5 months before his presentation. On histopathological examination, a transected parasite body and a headbulb were found in the mid-dermis. The parasite was confirmed as belonging to the genus Gnathostoma, most likely Gnathostoma doloresi. The patient recovered u…

Cutaneous larva migrans (hookworm) acquired in Christchurch, New Zealand.

A case of cutaneous larva migrans is presented. The patient acquired the parasite in a suburban Christchurch property. A biopsy confirmed the clinical diagnosis. Cutaneous larva migrans is common in returned travellers from the tropics. It is rare in New Zealand, however. Presumably there were very specific, favourable local factors to allow maturation and transmission of the larva in this case.
